83. A Failure?

Jade’s pov:
The elders were as loathsome as ever, and had made sure to tell me just how useless I was as a Luna. It was our third meeting this week, and they kept stressing over the fact that a pack without its alpha was a pack that could not function properly.
As if I didn’t know that already. Luna Sherry and Alpha Kade had to leave the day prior back to their territory, but after telling me repeatedly to reach out to them should there be any news, or if I were to need any help.
Looking at the elders, who were actually part of the pack, I felt bile rise in my throat.
Oh, heavens only knew how much I was itching for a fight. But I couldn’t. Not only was my wolf basically dormant, nurturing the baby within me, but also because I didn’t care for the mess that would surely follow.
“We are talking in circles,” one of them muttered, his eyes spitting fire at me. “We need to take action. We haven’t received any news in regards to Alpha Alexander’s trial, or any other news…”
“I won’t take my Alpha’s place unless I know for sure that he isn’t coming back,” Luc told him coldly from where he stood behind me, together with Trevor.
“And who said we would accept a beta to take over the position of Alpha?” Another one of the elders dismissed Luc’s statement as if it held no power at all.
Jeremiah, the most daring among the elders, was seemingly on edge, and didn’t fail to show it. His chair scraped back noisily, and he slapped both hands on the table in a demanding manner that didn’t sit well with me, “We have to make a decision. The future of the pack depends on it.”
“Sit down,” I commanded, eyes narrowing at his display of displeasure.
“Who are you to order me around?” He bellowed. “You’re a failure in all the aspects that matter as a Luna, as a mate, and as a werewolf.”
I clicked my tongue in dismay, even if a few scathing retorts burnt my lips.
The door opened from behind me, and my whole world turned upside down in the most positive way possible as I felt his presence.
“Luc,” came the voice I had longed to hear for two weeks now, “Trevor, what are you doing? Are you going to stand idly as a haughty old geezer talks down to your Luna this way?”
Luc merely smirked whereas Trevor appeared to be as shocked as I was.
I had to pinch myself a couple of times, to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, before I shot out of my chair, and rushed to him to the man who owned my heart. The pleasurable electric shocks were all the proof I needed to believe that the impossible had happened, that my prayers had been answered.
“Alex,” I cried, right into his loving embrace. “Oh my God, Alex! Is that you? Is that really you?”
“I’m home, love,” he whispered softly before placing a kiss on the top of my head.
“By orders of Alpha Alexander,” Luc then began as I heard him move, “I, beta Luc, now inform you that you’re accused of contempt. You will be sent to isolation for a month, and will from now on be demoted from your position as elder, Jeremiah Pommers.”
“You can’t do that,” the man scoffed in disbelief but also in a scared tone of voice.
“Watch me,” Luc retorted in a haughty tone, which spoke louder than any words could of the sheer amount of willpower it had taken him to keep his shit together till now.
I heard rather than saw the elder fall, as Luc no doubt delivered a harsh blow to him, and the rest of the elders began to object noisily.
Alex, who had been hugging me as if his very life depended on it, soon released me, and placed a kiss on my lips a kiss which was rejuvenating and everything I wished for the past few days.
He then didn’t hesitate to let out in a deadly cold voice, “Quiet, everyone!”
I was neither scared nor intimidated. On the contrary, I now had my mate and biggest support back by my side. I was just overjoyed, and far too much in shock for everything to register… Everything felt unreal as I now stood next to the man who had made me worry like there was no tomorrow. Hell, I even lost a couple of pounds even though I was heavily pregnant.
“It is good to see you again, Alpha Alexander,” one of the elders, who rarely ever spoke, let out in his usually slithering way which always rubbed me off the wrong way.
“Don’t be a kissass, Bartholomew,” Alex both sounded and looked angry. “I expected you bunch to be worried about the pack, but never thought you would go so far as to belittle your Luna. Who do you think you are exactly?”
“I am an elder, and it is my duty to look after the pack,” the man answered haughtily, deflecting the part about the insults.
“Luc, do you have the recordings?” Alex then ignored the man in favor of talking to his beta.
“Naturally,” Luc smirked, and I was reminded of his earlier smirk.
I looked between Alex and then Luc successively, eyes wide in awe and shock, and my jaw all but dropped to the floor as I realized just what had transpired, right under my nose.
“You knew!” I let out accusingly, shooting Luc a look.
He dropped to one knee at once. And with his head hanging low, he said, “I apolgize Luna Jade. You did, and still do so much for the pack on a daily basis. The Alpha had sworn me to secrecy… My lips were sealed. I am really sorry.”
My eyes, which had barely just dried up, began to tear up again.
“I thought we were better friends than that,” I let out in a broken whisper.
“If it helps, Luna Jade, he didn’t tell me either,” Trevor intervened in a calm tone of voice.
I inhaled deeply and then heaved a sigh before telling Luc to stand up.
“Meeting adjourned,” Alex soon let out in a cold tone of voice, as he eyed each of the elders one by one. Not one of them dared to breathe a word.
He then turned to me as they were leaving, “I have so much to tell you, love.”
“Start by why you informed Luc and not me,” I grumbled petulantly.
“I’ll tell you everything,” he assured me, a smile stretching his lips. And then, he was holding me up in his arms, bridal style, leading us to the office the office which had been painful to even enter just this morning.
