Cyril
“Oh dear! If you are tired of your wife, Sophia, why don’t you divorce her instead and become a free man just like me? That way, you won’t have to punish yourself like this. You know I hate to see you like this,” I questioned Andrew’s guts, boosting his morale.
I wanted him to own up to his shit like a real man, but he failed to understand the signal I was trying to pass across.
“I can’t do that. Not everyone is like you. And get your hands off me. I would rather not be infected by your spirit of stupidity,” Andrew pushed me aside. I managed to maintain my stamina. Else, I would have fallen and hurt myself.
“And don’t you dare drag my wife into this shit? Real men don’t act the way you did. You should consider getting another lawyer to process your divorce,” Andrew spoke while facing the opposite direction.
If I wasn’t next to him, I would have argued that he was having a telephone conversation and wasn’t referring to me.
I moved closer to him. “Excuse me? What did you just say? And what’s that supposed to mean?”
“Exactly what you heard, Cyril. I am done being your lawyer. An official statement will follow soon,” this time, he spoke to me without fear.
I heard a bell ringing right inside my eardrum. My vision instantly became blurry. Andrew was standing right in my presence, yet I could barely see him. All I could see in front of me were stars.
I stood there for a few minutes, questioning myself. What have I done to myself? Will I ever survive this nightmare? Where and how did I get it wrong?
“Oh yes, you will survive this and many more disasters coming your way because it’s not over yet.” A voice echoed in my ear.
I looked around and saw that it was Andrew. He presented a written document to me and said, “This is the contract we both signed when you appointed me as your chief legal attorney. I am cutting all ties with everything that has to do with you and that includes your company.”
I died a thousand times immediately after Andrew was done talking. I thought it was all a dream. But he just confirmed that it was the reality, rubbing my face in the mud.
My hands were shaking in the air. I couldn’t even collect the documents from him. They had suddenly become too heavy in my sight.
I was making plans to apologize to Andrew before he decided to humiliate me with the sad news.
Yes, I thought I was going to turn it around for my own good. I guess I was wrong.
I guess I came too late to make amends. Andrew has been my company’s attorney over the last few years. We break up as foes and make up as best friends.
I thought it was going to be the usual routine this time. Sadly, it wasn’t. Andrew came with a different ball game, as though he’d been waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. And when the opportunity came, he didn’t hesitate to utilize it.
“You are not going to take it?” Andrew hissed and dropped the documents on the ground. He keeps getting more violent with every minute that passes.
I screwed up!
I ruined things with his mistress. I haven’t seen him react that way toward me before. That must have hurt him a lot.
Clothed with shame, I bent to pick up the documents from the desk. There was no way I was leaving it there, even though it has become pretty useless for me.
“I am sorry, mate. That was just a silly joke. Never knew it was going to hurt you. Please, I still need you as my lawyer. At least, pending the time the NY divorce process will be sorted out,” I begged Andrew.
I wasn’t the type that loves to ask for forgiveness, but in that situation, I had no choice. I already vowed to Olivia that I was gonna return with the divorce papers so she could sign them.
How do I go back telling her that my supposed lawyer that ought to stand by me, turned his back against me in the dying minutes? She won’t just mock the hell out of me, she will also have a thousand reasons to continue cheating on me with that son of a bitch called Adrian.
“It’s your audacity for me. You are not only cunning, you are also selfish. Do you think the world revolves around you because of your wealth? You have got to be kidding me,” Andrew giggled while he paced around me as though he were searching for something. What a way to turn down my apology.
Shortly after, his clerk Kelly walked inside the office. The presence of Kelly added more salt to my injury.
“Sir, I got your text. You sent for me,” Kelly reported herself to Andrew after glaring at me in a disrespectful manner.
I knew my situation was about to get messier after the glare. I was already making plans to start leaving at that point.
“Yes, I did. It’s good you showed up at the right time. Can you please walk that man out of my office?” Andrew authorized Kelly while he pointed at me like a non-living thing.
I felt insulted but didn’t retaliate.
What’s the point of retaliating knowing that I stood no chance against Andrew, let alone the both of them?
“Sir, you may need to leave now. Disregard my gender, I might be dangerous when I wanna,” Kelly warned me.
It was funny how the table turned against me. Karma really screwed me up big time.
A while ago, I forced myself inside Andrew’s office after Kelly warned me not to. That single act of mine almost cost her job.
A moment later, she is the one walking me out of the office. What a way to save her job. Trust Kelly enough not to waste the golden opportunity.
“You don’t have to touch me. I am already on my way out,” I told Kelly. I can’t imagine myself being treated like that by someone like Kelly.
I would have doubted if anyone had told me that a day like this would come.
It hurt deeply that I returned home, facing the reality that my dear wife, Olivia, is cheating on me with my business partner.
It becomes scarier, knowing that I am going to live with the pain for so long until I find a good lawyer again.
