Colonel Thompson looked flushed. He didn’t expect me to defend myself so easily. He expected to be able to bully me into accepting full blame for the operation’s failure. The whole time I questioned Colonel Thompson I never broke eye contact. He broke eye contact several times, but I maintained my hold on him.
“I don’t answer to YOU, Ms. Miller. And I won’t,” fumed Colonel Thompson.
“No, but you do answer to ME. You will EXPLAIN YOURSELF NOW!” demanded my Dad.
“With all the mishaps of the mistaken identity, the house that was broken into, and the raid by the police, the neighbors were getting suspicious of us. We were doing our best to lay low and not draw any unnecessary attention to ourselves but it didn’t work. All of a sudden, we had people asking us why we moved here, where we worked, and why did we kept such weird hours, and the questions kept coming. It was becoming too much to blend into the neighborhood. We had to call off the operation. We couldn’t protect the ‘family’ any longer because we were compromised,” explained Colonel Thompson.
“Who do you think exposed you to your neighbors? Or do you think your people were a little clumsy like they were when they went ‘hiking’ in the woods with the boundary lines,” I inquired which caused Colonel Thompson’s head to snap in my direction once again.
“Now look here, Ms. Miller. My people know how to handle themselves. If we were compromised, it was because someone betrayed us. Did you tell someone like Doyle Kessler about us? Huh? Maybe to get revenge for …” was all he could say before I was out of my seat and had him pinned against the wall by the throat.
“You TRAITOR! YOU BETRAYED YOUR OWN PEOPLE!” I should kill you right where you stand!” I growled at him snapping my canines at him while I held by the neck.
“Delta Heir Melanie, Stand Down NOW!” bellowed Alpha King Matthew.
“As you wish, Alpha King Matthew,” I replied as I released Colonel Thompson from my grasp.
Before Colonel Thompson could slide down to the floor, Beta Walsh and Beta Yared had him contained as well as two other warrior wolves.
“So, you were in cahoots with Doyle Kessler after all. Delta Heir Melanie thought you were. All of this seemed to be too much of a coincidence to be happening at the same time,” explained a calm Alpha King Matthew to Colonel Thompson. “And since Doyle Kessler personally threatened to kill my mate, the Queen, yesterday, you get to enjoy my dungeons. You will feel my wrath. Betas Walsh and Yared, take him away where he will be held for trial for treason against the Alpha Queen and the Delta Female of the Brookwood Pack,” announced Alpha King Matthew.
“Yes Alpha King,” they chorused together as they escorted Colonel Thompson out of the room.
Everyone else was stunned into silence. I returned to my place next to my Father and Anthony. Anthony wrapped his arms around my waist and allowed me to inhale his scent so I could calm down.
“Well done Delta Heir Melanie. You are right Delta Troy; she is more than ready to take your place as Delta next week. I can’t wait to see how well she performs for her pack,” praised Alpha King Friedrich.
“Thank you, Alpha King Friedrich,” I replied softly barely above a whisper.
“He’s right Melanie. You are more than ready. I am so proud of you,” complimented Dad as he came in for a hug.
“Thank you, Dad. I didn’t overstep my boundaries did I?” I asked him softly afraid that I overstepped.
“Not at all. In fact, You did good, very good. I’m proud of you,” Dad stated with pride showing in his voice.
‘As am I. I can’t wait to show you how much. I can’t show you with all these people present,’ cooed Anthony in my ear.
‘Stop. You can’t make me horny with my Dad and the Alpha Kings present. That wouldn’t be right. I love you,’ I purred back at him.
‘I love you too,’ purred Anthony back at me.
“All right, now back to the meeting. It’s safe to say, Colonel Thompson caused this operation to go off its rails quickly. We will not be able to send another family undercover any time soon. Can we keep the family there and monitor them from a distance? Does anyone have any suggestions?” Dad asked the group.
“The family wasn’t compromised, just the overwatch group. The family hasn’t pulled out yet. They can stay there. We were talking, Max and I that we weren’t compromised. We could stay and keep the family safe. We could maybe bring in a female or two as part of our family so to speak to make our family look natural. Would that work?” Captain Stewart inquired with his second in command Max.
“If the family is still there, they need to be protected. If you haven’t been compromised then yes, by all means, go back and protect them. Do you have any problems with me monitoring the operation?” I asked point blank.
“Absolutely not. Colonel Thompson was an ass. We all heard the way he spoke to you. It wasn’t right. We all told him so. We will do what is necessary to keep the family safe and us undetected. You have my word Delta Heir Melanie,” Captain Stewart declared vehemently.
“Thank you. Then, I don’t see why we cannot continue with the operation. Let’s get back to work everyone. We have a family to protect. Be safe, be alert, and by all means, be careful. We don’t want anyone to get hurt,” I advised as we drew the meeting to a close.
“As you wish, Delta Heir Melanie,” answered Captain Stewart.
When I looked around the room, pride was evident on the faces of both Alpha Kings, my Dad, Anthony, Anderson, and Noah. What? I just did what I normally do, my job. As a female, I have to work extra hard to prove my worth to males who think they are superior to me in every way.
Alpha King Matthew bade us all goodbye and said he would see us all soon. I wonder what he meant by that. But I never got a chance to ask because I was caught up in a smoldering kiss by Anthony. He said the way I had Colonel Thompson up against the wall was ‘Hot’ with a capital H.
We left the meeting and headed for home. Dad said we needed to check on the Command Center. I couldn’t wait to see the progress of the center and see what it actually looked like. Dad just chuckled at my excitement. He knew that this project was what saved my life after the rejection. It was my salvation. Now, I get to share it with Anthony. I couldn’t wait.
