Chapter 161 – How could you?

Book:The Rejected Ex-Wife Published:2025-2-13

June explained her ordeal to Zeus who listened with Rapt attention. By the time she was done, he stared at her like she had grown a second head.
“You mean to tell me that you were given a second chance at living if you succeed in saving me from a mysterious danger?” He asked with an incredulous tone. “How stupid do you think I am?”
June swore under her breath. “I am only trying to save my life by saving yours. If my Ex-husband lives in you as you claim, then he must have a mission too,”
Zeus remained calm, watching her with suspicious looks. She was right. The personality who lived inside of him spoke of having a mission too. However, he wasn’t patient enough to find out the details.
Neither was Rafael happy to disclose it. Zeus decided that since the young lady’s mission was to save his life, he was curious to see how that played out.
“Do you realise I am the most powerful living being alive?” He asked June who held her tongue. “Didn’t I tell you? I could wipe the entire universe if I so pleased. Isn’t it treacherous that a weak and wolfless woman would be the one to save my life?”
“You were poisoned,” June pointed out. “Since you are all powerful and knowing, I’d think you wouldn’t be getting a death threat.” She wore a salty smile, “Let’s not forget how you got into this situation in the first place. If my Ex-Husband is here then it’s as a result of your ”
“You have a smart mouth.” Zeus remarked. “I like that.”
June bit her tongue. There was no use responding to his demeaning comments. When Zeus found that she had stated her case, he smirked. This was all too interesting to pass up.
“You make a point so I will make you an offer.” He said, “The only way to save my life is to find the one who poisoned me.” June was ready to protest but he raised his arm. “I will give you a task. Not to worry, it is well aligned with your purpose here.”
“Find the one who tried to poison me, June.” He said. “That way, I’ll be finally safe and you’ll be out of here. Perhaps your husband too. What do you say?”
“Ex-Husband.” She gritted, “I don’t think-”
“Oh no! Did I give the impression that you have a choice?” Zeus interrupted with a frown. “Don’t be confused, June. It’s a bloody order.”
The girls returned the following day. It was a-day-to the mating ceremony. June had her job cut out for her with Zeus’s orders. She had been given some materials to help her search for the culprit behind his getting poisoned.
With her training and the new job, June barely had time. She returned to the Alpha’s house for a snack at noon and met the girls in disarray. Candice laid on the floor seeming lifeless while Tara rained accusations on Zoey.
“How could you do this?!” She roared, shaking Candice who seemed dead. “How could you kill her?!”
“I didn’t!” Zoey said with glistening eyes. “I ate the food too, someone must have poisoned it. I swear this is a misunderstanding..”
June rushed to Candice, trying and failing to revive her via CPR. The corpse had turned cold, and her teeth were sealed tight, she was gone. Just then, Zeus stepped into the scene and the atmosphere went a few degrees hotter.
“What is going on here?” He asked when he saw the lifeless lady on the floor.
“She’s dead.” June announced in a pained tone.
“She killed her.” Tara pointed an accusing finger. “Zoey made lunch and invited us all to eat. Candice started eating and by the time I came here she was rolling on the floor. She died soon after.”
Zoey fell to her knees. “I swear! I swear I didn’t kill her! I was only trying to-”
“Where are the servants?” Zeus asked, looking around. He had some help who was paid to ensure that his home was running smoothly. They had no business leaving without carrying out their duties.
“I asked them to leave.” Zoey said and Tara wore a secret smile. “I wanted to make lunch myself. I only wanted to bring the girls together and facilitate a good relationship regardless of tomorrow’s results. I don’t know how this happened…”
June felt the sincerity in her words. Everyone with a heart could see that she was indeed innocent. Or she was a pretty good actress. Whatever the case may be, Candice, a promising young female, was dead and someone needed to be held accountable.
“Did you see her eat from the food?” Zeus asked Tara who shook her head no.
“I swear! I did eat from it! I ate a single plate in the kitchen!”
“Where is the plate?” June asked, hoping to clear the young lady who looked dishevelled, panicked and unkempt.
Zoey turned to the kitchen aisle. It was clean. She had washed up the place and had a bath before she called them to eat. When Zeus noticed her confusion, he frowned and beckoned upon one of the guards.
“Lock her up and torture her until she says the truth.” He ordered and June felt pity on the young girl who was dragged away by two buff men.
They soon cleaned up the corpse and that evening, the Alpha’s house was like a graveyard. News of Candice’s death soon spread across the community and they all spoke in hushed tones of how deadly the women were to go through such lengths.
The people wondered if the mating ceremony would be held the next day and all retired to their homes with confusion. Meanwhile, Georgina was mad when she heard the news, she put a call across to Tara.
“How could you?” She roared, “I told you to take care of the weakling! Not the other women.” She gritted.
Tara was in her room, nursing a smile. “What are you talking about?” She feigned ignorance.
“You know what I am talking about!” Georgina hit the table with anger. “Is this it? Is this your plan to become Zeus’s bride? Are you that insecure of your ability to win his heart?”
Tara felt pained but hid it well. “I will be Zeus’ bride tomorrow. Don’t you think you should speak to me with more respect?” She chided.
“You must be a fool to think he would pick you. Zeus is no fool, Tara. Neither am I. Taking the girls out was a poor move. One you would regret. You just made losing out a whole lot easier.”
Tara ended the call, refusing to listen to any more of her bullshit. Meanwhile, June sought out Zeus in his office. “Do you really believe she killed her? I mean, even if she wanted to perform such an act, she wouldn’t handle it in such a manner.”
June pressed further. “I think we should look into this murder. We can’t handle this with face value.”
Zeus met her eyes, “Do you think I’m a fool?” He smirked. “I must accept I didn’t expect such a drastic development.” He stood up. “While you were busy talking, I found out something interesting.”
June’s attention was caught. “What is that?”
“The same poison used on Candice miraculously happened to be the same one found in my drink.” June’s eyes widened. “I think we might have found a trail to getting the perpetrator of both crimes.”
