Trevor left his study after the phone call and walked back to the living room where Laura was waiting for him. She had already chosen the movie she wanted them to watch; a historical movie. Which was one genre they both loved to watch. He sat down beside her and he pressed the play button on the remote control.
When the final credits rolled after two hours, he turned to her and asked if she was ready to go to bed.
Laura smiled, her hands cradling her swollen belly. “Yes,” she murmured.”
He helped up and took her to the bedroom, where he settled her into the bed. He kissed her forehead and left to clean up the house before he went to join her in bed.
Laura had slept soundly until she suddenly woke up to sharp pains around her middle in the early hours of Monday at 5:42 am. She rubbed on her protruding belly and then she felt a sudden rush of fluid between her legs.
“What?” she thought.
Then she remembered what she had been told in the hospital and all she had read in her pregnancy books. It meant that her water just broke, and her body was coming.
“Oh my God,” she whispered as another sharp pain tested through her.
She shook Trevor awake, panic ebbing into her voice as she exclaimed, “My water just broke, Trevor! Wake up!”
Trevor’s eyes opened wide at once. “are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Oh my God,” he looked into her eyes with confusion. “I thought y-”
“Yes, I’m not due for two weeks. But it’s already happening.”
“Okay, just take it easy,” he said and jumped out of bed in a flurry of excitement and nerves. “Let me call Dr. Nath.”
He picked up his phone and called the doctor, who asked him to bring his wife immediately to the general medical center.
Laura had already got up and was pacing back and forth in the room.
Trevor quickly fetched their hospital bags packed with baby clothes and essentials, all the while trying to calm his trembling hands. He took the bags to the car and came back to get her dressed for the hospital while he also changed out of his pajamas.
“It’s time to go,” he said gently, took her hand, and helped her to the car outside.
The drive to the hospital felt like a blur. Laura’s contractions were getting stronger, and Trevor kept glancing at her, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “Breathe, Em. We’re almost there.”
The nurses helped her inside when they got to the hospital, and Dr. Nath was already waiting for them.
The next few hours were the most remarkable in their lives so far. The baby, a boy, came very fast. Faster than what Dr. Nath and the nurses expected for a first time mom. Her husband was beside her all the way.
Encouraging her when she was asked to push, cleaning off her tears and sweat over and over.
They both went for joy when Dr. Nath raised their son up, saying, “such a big baby.”
Trevor cut the cord and one nurse placed the baby on Laura’s stomach. It was such an incredible moment for the young couple. It was after then Dr. Nath congratulated them and he walked away to clean up, leaving the nurses to take over fully.
He let himself out of the labor room as the nurses were cleaning up both the mother and child.
His heart thumped a joyous rhythm as he stepped outside. A smile splitting his face, he couldn’t believe that he had become a father in what seemed like a twinkle of an eye. He walked outside into the hospital garden and removed his phone from his pocket. He had to call his mom and also his parents-in-law.
He dialed his mother first, the familiar ring echoing in his ear.
“Mom,” he breathed, his voice thick with emotion when his mom picked up, saying, “hello Trevor,” in a sleep laden voice. “Laura just put to bed, it’s a boy!”
He could hear his mother’s gasp of delight before she said, “oh my God, Trevor! That’s wonderful news!
Congratulations to you both!” She was so happy for her son and his wife, Laura.
“How is she?” His mom asked with concern. “And the baby. I hope there’s no problems at all?”
“No Mom,” he replied. “There’s no problem. Everything is fine.”
“Praise be to God,” the older woman said. “I will call her later, after she might have taken enough rest.”
“Okay mom,” he said. “I want to call her parents to give them the good news.”
“Please do,” Mrs. Paige urged. “It’s very important.”
“Talk to you later, mom.” He said and ended the call.
Trevor, still on cloud nine, pulled a call dialed Mr. Gray’s number, his heart pounding with excitement, he just couldn’t believe that he was now a father.
“Hello, Mom?” Trevor said. It was Laura’s mom that picked the call. He tried to keep his voice steady.
“The baby is here!” He announced jubilantly.
“Yes, yes, oh my God yes,” Mrs. Gray erupted in joyful screams and applause. “Congratulations to both of you.”
“Thank you mom,” Trevor said. “What about Dad?”
“Let me get him,” Trevor heard footsteps. “He should be in the living room.”
“Honey,” he heard his mother-in-law calling out. “Laura gave birth this morning. Trevor is on the phone.
“Hi, Trevor, congratulations.” Mr. Gray’s voice floated into Trevor’s ear, his voice filled with pride and love.
“Thank you daddy,” Trevor giggled.
