I was sitting in a chair by the window holding a book even though I wasn’t reading. I was wondering where my mate went by this time of the night. I hear the door crack open and I look up to see Shenaya sneaking in like a thief.
“What the hell?” I raised my voice and I could see the same fear that was always on her face right there.
“Why are you sneaking into the room? Where the hell have you been?” I questioned
I saw her flinched and I could see her hand trembling in fear which made me surprised. I haven’t even done anything to her personally to make her fear me so much. I mean I killed her mate but she isn’t aware of that yet.
When I didn’t get any response from her, I moved closer to her to pick her up. I placed her on the table right in the corner of the room. I removed her shoes and settled between her legs leaving little space between us.
Now I could see the tension and the fear in her reduced a little bit. I looked straight into her green eyes and I can say boldly that those are the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. Her hair fell on her face and I had I tucked them to the back of her ear. My eyes searched her face and landed on her lips and I wanted to kiss her so badly.
“Why were you sneaking in?” I asked her softly this time
“I didn’t want anyone in the pack to know about our marriage” she finally spoke for the first time since she entered and what she said pissed me off.
What does she mean she didn’t want people to know? Is she ashamed of me?
I narrowed my eyes at her, trying to control my anger. “What do you mean by that? Why don’t you want them to know?”
Shenaya bit her lip, a nervous habit I’d noticed over time. “It’s not that I’m ashamed of you,” she said softly, her voice trembling. “I just… I don’t want to cause any more trouble or attract attention. Our relationship is complicated enough.”
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “Complicated? You think stealthily roaming around is going to make it any better?” She shook her head, her green eyes glistening with unshed tears. “No, but… I don’t know what else to do. I don’t want to be a pack member gossip topic and I do not want to draw any attention to myself.
I would appreciate it if they don’t know about it just yet.” She finished and I felt a pang of guilt, knowing how difficult this was for her. But I couldn’t let her see my vulnerability. I forcefully raised her head to meet my gaze.
“Shenaya, you’re my mate now. You are going to be the mother of my Pups and the reason I haven’t marked you yet is only because you didn’t want me to just yet. You shouldn’t have to hide or sneak around like this. If anyone has a problem with it, they’ll have to answer to me.”
She sighed, leaning into my touch. “Alpha, it’s not that simple. You have a mate and I also have a mate I haven’t resolved our issues with”
I went silent on that because I knew she was going to run away from me and may never return if I should burst it to her right there that I killed her cheating mate. My mate and I already had an agreement we are working on so I don’t think there is going to be an issue with Skylar.
“You should forget about that your cheating partner and Trust me Skylar is not going to be an issue” I finally said to her.
I looked into her eyes before saying “Shenaya. We can’t keep hiding.” I need her to see the sincerity in my eyes.
She hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Okay. I’ll try. But you have to promise me something.”
“Anything,” I said, my voice softening.
“Promise me you won’t make it known unless I’m ready. No matter what happens.”
I pulled her closer, wrapping my arms around her with little hesitation in my voice “I promise, Shenaya.”
She rested her head on my shoulder, and for the first time, I felt a sense of peace. Maybe, just maybe, we could make this work.
The next day, We were in the middle of an intense drill when Lucy’s voice broke through my concentration via mind-link.
“Aiden, there’s trouble at the pack house. It’s Skylar and Shenaya.”
My heart jumped in fear while anger surged through me. Without wasting time, I called the whole session off and raced towards the pack house. The closer I got, the louder the noise became.
The pack members were gathered in a circle, murmuring and gasping at the sight before them.
I pushed through and everyone started pathing the way for me when they saw me coming through, my heart nearly stopped when I saw Shenaya lying unconscious on the ground. Blood drained from my face, and a cold fury settled in my chest. I dropped to my knees beside her, carefully lifting her into my arms. Her skin was pale, and her breathing was shallow. I could feel the bond between us weakening, a sensation that filled me with dread.
I barked out orders to the nearby warriors. “Clear the way! Somebody get me a doctor Now!”
As I rushed towards the pack infirmary, my mind raced. Why was Skylar here? We had agreed to reject each other, an arrangement that suited us both since she was in love with another and I… I was in love with Shenaya. The thought of Skylar being the cause of Shenaya’s condition made my blood boil.
By the time I reached the hospital, the doctors and nurses were already waiting for me at the entrance, I guess someone had already mindlinked them and they immediately took Shenaya from my arms and began their assessment.
I paced the hallway, my mind a whirlwind of emotions. How could this happen? Why did Skylar come back?
Minutes felt like hours until finally, the door to Shenaya’s room opened, and the doctor stepped out. “She’s stable for now, but we need to monitor her closely. There was a lot of stress on her body, and it affected her deeply.”
I nodded, trying to keep my composure. “Thank you. Please do everything you can.”
The doctor assured me they would and went back inside, leaving me alone with my thoughts. My hand clenched into a fist at my side. Skylar would pay for this. I couldn’t afford to lose Shenaya, not now, not ever.
As I made my way back to the pack house, the murmurs of the pack members fell silent. They could sense the storm brewing within me. I found Skylar standing defiantly near the entrance, her expression a mix of anger and fear.
“What the hell are you doing here, Skylar?” I demanded, my voice cold and sharp.
She crossed her arms, trying to look unfazed. “I came to see if you’d changed your mind about us.”
I took a step closer, my eyes narrowing. “We had an agreement. You were supposed to stay away.”
“What the fuck did you do to her? I asked remembering that she was a witch.
“if anything happens to her, I will make sure you face the consequences.” I threatened her and this is not her empty threat. I’m sure she knew better than to trespass.
“You better hope Shenaya and our pup are alright, or you’ll wish you never set foot in this pack again.”
Her eyes bulged almost coming out of their sockets as she heard about Shenaya’s pregnancy but she didn’t say anything still.
I turned away from her and marched back towards the hospital, my heart heavy with worry and anger. Shenaya needed me, and I wouldn’t let anything keep me from her side. Not now, not ever.
