CHAPTER NINTY-ONE: MATERIAL GIRL

Book:The devil’s new plaything Published:2025-2-9

MADDIE’S POINT OF VIEW
We are both cuddled up on the scattered sheets, Stephen and I, we both smell like sex, he holds me tightly like he never wants to let go but I gotta go right now, it’s my engagement party tonight so I have to get ready to attend.
I move his hand off my body and tip toe out of the bed because I don’t want to wake him but he wakes up.
He pulls me back and kisses me on the lips.
“Where are you going.” He said in that ‘I just woke up’ voice.
“My engagement party is in a few hours, I have to get ready.” I replied as I shimmied off his grasp and picked up my clothes from the floor.
“So you are really going to get married to him?” Stephen asked, he looks fully awake now, he is now sitting on the bed looking at me with a small frown on his face.
I did not reply him, of course I am going to marry Delvin, it’s what my parents want, it’s what they have always wanted and I don’t might the truck load of money and luxury that being Delvin’s wife will bring me.
I am going to let you in on a small secret, my family is not as rich as we pretend to be, my father owes millions of dollars in debt, all this… the money, the luxury cars and everything, it’s just a front, it’s all fake, my family is slowly becoming bankrupt getting married to Delvin is the only thing that will save us all from the humiliation that being poor bring.
So yeah I’m not going to call off my wedding just because Stephen over here gives good dick, I have always been practical, my parents thought me to never let my heart rule over my head.
I knew from the beginning that this thing with Stephen will have to end eventually, it is fun I have to admit but that is all it will ever be… fun, sometimes fun is not enough, sometimes even love is not enough, I am a material girl, I like having money to splurge and Stephen cannot offer me that but Delvin can which is why I am going with him.
“Stephen, my love, I am going to marry Delvin, it’s the only way out.” I said and gave him a kiss before heading to the bathroom, taking a shower, getting dressed and heading back to my parents mansion to get ready for my engagement party.
In a few hours I will be Delvin Alcantara’s fiancee and in a few weeks time I will be his wife and the heiress to the Alcantara empire! I can’t wait!
I can’t wait to walk into that line of generational wealth! I would never have to bother about one day going bankrupt ever again!
ZARA’S POINT OF VIEW
I got to the party at the Elite hall and immediately realized that I probably shouldn’t be here, I look like everyone else in here, for the first time in a long time… for the first time since my father died and left us without a single penny I look good… rich even, I look like I fit in here but I don’t feel like I fit in.
Nobody knows what the party is even for, according to the invites ‘we will all have to find out when we get there’.
I sips on my drink, I am sitting alone even there I came here with Katie, Katie and Jake are somewhere in one of the hidden corners of the hall probably making out, that’s all they do all day, not like I’m judging… okay yeah I totally am.
The light went dim and Maddison Perozo walked in with Delvin by her side. Her dress brought light to the dimly room, it was sparkly and as much as I would like to be a hater I can’t… it upsets me to say that the dress is actually beautiful.
They got to the stage, slow love songs started playing.
“Maddison Perozo will you marry me?” Delvin went on his knees and asked, my breath got caught in my throat. I already knew that they would get married so why am I this hurt?
“Yes.” She replied excitedly. I hate her! I hate him! I hate them both but most of all I hate myself for being here!
I picked up my purse ready to leave when the lights came on, and Maddison’s eyes met mine, she had a smirk on her face.
Maddison took the microphone from the MC.
“This day would not be completely if I don’t invite Zara one of Delvin’s dear dear friend to come and sit with our other friends at the front.” Maddison said.
Wait what?!
I stop dead in my tracks.
“Guys give a round of applause for Zara as she makes her way to the front.” Maddison added.
I wanted to leave more than anything but the expectant glances from everyone in the room made me move over to front, to sit with other of their friends.
From this view I could watch their engagement party clearly.
I looked at my phone.
*** I thought Delvin Alcantara is your boyfriend how come he asked Maddison to marry him*** the text from Katie read.
***long story*** I replied.
I just want all this to be over so I can go back to my apartment and most likely cry myself to sleep.
I looked up to notice Delvin staring at me. My phone beeped again, I don’t at it.
*** Can we meet up at our spot after this is over?*** the text read and this text is from Delvin.
*** focus on your fiancee*** I replied, what does he mean with that text!
*** please I need to explain everything to you, I love you so much Zara*** Delvin texted again. I sighed, I kinda wanna hear his explanation.
*** Okay*** I replied.
It’s just a little meeting, nothing can go wrong…
