Book:The wolf in me Published:2025-2-8

I lay in the cell, counting the rats that scurry across the floor. I stare at a rat that was nibbling on a piece of bread that it found in another cell. It runs off with a full belly and another takes its place.
Can’t they poison these stupid rats? One even but me earlier which hurt like a dagger to the leg.
Luckily, it healed quick because of my fast healing. That was three days ago, the second day I was in here.
I think I’ve made a mistake with trusting the members.
I wish I could hold Racheal in my arms right now, Cooing her to sleep. I miss my family, but I know Racheal won’t have a life with me hiding from our own pack. I have to go through with this…
I suddenly hear a door open and I jump up. Are they going to kill me? I watch Ronald unlock my cell with a solemn look on his face. This can’t be good… He puts on some gloves and pulls out silver shackles. I scramble back until my back hits the cold stone wall. No! No! No!
I see him shake his head and give me a sympathetic look on his face.
“Please, Mira. Let’s get this over with.” He says weakly.
I shake my head furiously and whimper. I regret it! I was wrong! I want to go home! Please! Leo help me! Before I could even comprehend what was happening, I feel the burning shackles wrap around my wrists. I let out a Yelp of pain and try to pull away.
Ronald pulls me out of the cell and up the stairs, to the exit. What’s going to happen to me?
“Am I gonna die?” I whimper.
Ronald glances at me and keeps walking. He shakes his head and looks at the ground.
“That all depends on you.” He says smoothly.
“What?” I ask weakly.
He sighs and his shoulders slump.
“You’ll see.” He whispers.
He takes me to the pack house and into the meeting room. I see every pack member here, even the children. Some had sympathetic expression but others had a cold cowl.
I look up to the man that locked me up and he nods his head to me. He sits at the head of the room, on top of a table. Wow, a little dramatic…. He raises his hand and everyone falls silent.
“Today, we will be voting on whether or not to pardon our Luna or execute her. Luna, what do you have to say for your actions with the rogue incident?” He asks.
I swallow the knot in my throat and step forward.
“It was self defense. Only danger to my life will set my wolf off like that. And that was danger to my life.” I state simply.
The crowd murmurs but the man raises his hand once more. My hands start to shake, so I quickly cross my arms over my chest. He looks down at me.
“So how do we know you won’t kill us? For all we know, you could lose control and wipe this pack off the map like you did the rogues.” His voice stayed even as he said this to me.
“Because I am your Luna! You are like my pups. I will protect you with my life and I would never lay a hand in you. My wolf is too protective of her pups to let me lay a hand on you. You are my pack and my responsibility and I will care for you no matter what.” I say with an authoritative tone.
Every thing grew silent which made me uneasy. I fidget in my place and look around. All eyes are on me. Okay then…
“May I ask you if it is okay to put your control to the test, Luna?” The man asks.
I stand up straight and look up to him. His eyes stare into mine with such ferocity, I could feel my soul melting.
“Do what you need to do.” I say simply.
I know what they are thinking, but I’ve been through worse. I watch as the mothers take their children away and the males stand in front of the remaining females. They expect me to lose control.
Ronald steps away and the man that slapped me those long months ago appeared. His eyes are filled with anger and vengeance. Oh crap… Before I knew what was happening, his fist connects with my face.
I fall to the ground and whimper in pain but he’s not finished. I feel his foot plant into my stomach multiple times until I went numb there.
He notices and lifts me up from the ground. He punches me in the face too many times to count and throws me onto the hard floor. I cough and blood spews out of my mouth. That’s not good. He straddles me and begins hitting me everywhere on my upper body you could think of. My eyes start to close and I hear the older man yell something but I’m to out of it to hear. Don’t kill him, don’t kill him, don’t kill him. I feel the man get pulled off of me and then I’m lifted up into strong arms. Sparks fly up my body and I know who is holding me.
Leo..
I hear muffled yelling then everything goes black.
What a day.
Leo’s pov
I can’t believe she stormed off like that! I had to run after her but lost her when she got to the pack house. I went inside but right as I found her, I saw her get whisked away to the prison. I almost lost control and killed Ronald for letting her get locked up. I argued with him but he said the only way was to let this blow through on its own, even if they decide kill her, which I won’t allow.
I have stayed quiet for five days but watching her get beaten to death was too much. Right as I was going to intervene, one of the Elders spoke up and commanded him to stop. Of course he didn’t, so I ripped him off of her and threw him across the room. I held her close to me and I saw a small smile touch her busted lips.
I stand there and the Elder stares at Mira who is unconscious in my arms. He looks up to the crowd and stands tall.
“What you have witnessed here today is this kind, gentle woman be beaten and nearly killed to prove her innocence to us. She is of no danger to any of us! She is our Luna and we will treat her as our Luna from this day forward!”He yells proudly.
The pack erupts into cheers and I begin to leave with Mira in my arms.
‘I need pack medics in my room now!’ I scream through the pack link.
Every person grew silent as I said that and once I get her in my bed, the doctors burst through the door. I wish Dickson were here, he’s the only one I trust with my sweet Mira. They work quickly and push me aside. I want to be by her side but I’m pulled out of the room by strong arms. I turn around to see Ronald staring back at me. I growl at him for coming between my mate and I but quickly calm down. He has helped me these past few days so the least I can to for him is show some kindness.
He pats my shoulder and motions for me to follow him to the kitchen. I hold up my hand and my eyes glaze over.
‘William , Dickson . It’s safe to come home.’ I say through the mind link.
‘On our way. Is Mira okay?’ Dickson asks.
‘Just come home.’ I say then shut off the mind link.
I follow Ronald to the kitchen and slump against the wall, falling to the ground onto my butt.
