Book:The wolf in me Published:2025-2-8

It was some kind of rogue camp. I think. I see bodies that are missing their limbs and some are not even recognizable as a corpse. There is blood everywhere I step and I see dead women and children through the tent entrances. They were trying to hide. But from what? There is no one left alive. Every person here was viciously murdered.
Oh no, Mira!!
“Alpha! Her scent is the strongest in here.” John yells.
I race to a large building where John had already gone in. We go through a maze of halls until we come to a room. The room had blood splattered on the walls with corpses laying on the ground and their body parts are scattered everywhere. I see an empty chair with broken shackles on it. She was here! But where is she now?
‘Mira! Where are you? What happened?!’ I desperately ask.
I don’t know. I got knocked out by some guard and the next thing I know, I wake up in the middle of the forest.’
Her tone is off. Somethings not right. I shrug it off and try to focus on finding her.
‘Sound off, you might be close.’ I say through the mind link as I race out aside so I can hear.
As I open the door to get outside she says,’okay!’
I listen intently for her howl. Though very faint I hear it, she must be at least five miles away, maybe more. I quickly return a howl, letting her know where I’ll be coming from.
‘Was that you?’ She asks through the mind link.
I chuckle and say, ‘yeah. I’ll be there in a second.’
I shift into my wolf and dart through the forest toward where I heard her howl. After a few moments, I catch her scent. I run faster until I see her in my sights. Thank goodness, she’s alright. I notice her trying to hide her exposed body so I make sure my eyes don’t stray from hers. Once I’m in front of her, she smiles and wraps her arms around my neck.
Just from her touch, I feel sparks run through my body, calming my wolf. Not wanting to leave her on the cold ground, I quickly shift back into human form and lift her up. She automatically wraps her arms around my neck as I carry her in a bridal style.
“I’m here sweetie and nothing is going to take you away from me again. I promise.” I coo into her ear.
I mind link the others and tell them to set up camp about ten miles north of the rogue camp. I walk quickly to the others but being careful not to move jerk around too much so Mira can rest.
Once we make it back to the others I whisper to Ronald to lay an animal skin blanket we brought on the ground. I slowly begin to lay her down until a whimper escapes her lips and her grip on my neck tightens. My heart melts at her actions. She thinks I’m gonna leave her. I pull her close to me and hold her tightly.
“Don’t worry sweetie. I’ll never leave you. You’ll always be mine.” I whisper in her ear.
Her body instantly relaxes and a small smile touches her lips before she falls asleep. I rest my cheek on the top of her head and I hold her like this for what seems like hours. I watch three of them men come back with a deer they killed and they skin it and gut it. They cut it into strips and start cooking it on the fire, Ronald started before I got here
.
I keep Mira angled so they can’t see her exposed body. If they did see her I would personally make sure she would be the last thing they ever see. Once I know she is in a deep sleep I gently lay her down in the blanket and place another blanket over her.
“I’m a monster.” She mumbles in her sleep.
My heart breaks into a million pieces. What could she have done to make her even think of herself as a monster? She could never in the slightest come close to being a monster. I sit beside her sleeping form and ponder on her words.
It’s late now and the moon it shining brightly. I look down at her goddess-like form. Her skin is glowing from the moon’s light and her dark, wavy hair is sprawled out perfectly. Her lips are cracked slightly open and her cheeks have a faint pink tint. my beautiful Mira.
As I’m about is fall asleep myself, she shoots up into a sitting position and let’s out a blood curdling scream. I grab her shoulder and her eyes look towards me.
“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” I ask, my voice laced with worry.
She slowly nods as her eyes get glassy. She looks around with confusion in her eyes. Quickly her confusion disappears and in replaced with pain and fear.
“It was just a nightmare- it was just a nigh- it was just a nightmare.” She whispers to herself.
The need to comfort my mate overcomes me and I pull her to me and tightly wrap my arms around her small frame
.
“It’s okay, sweetie. It’s okay.” I whisper.
She instantly snuggles closer to me and relaxes. As she drifts off her mouth cracks open ever so slightly and I smile at that simple action.
“I love you, Mira.” I whisper knowing that she was asleep and unable to hear me.
How did I manage to get this perfect creature as my mate? She’s kind and funny, strong and loving and compassionate and brave- I could go on forever. And I’m just a blood thirsty alpha that kills for the fun of it. I don’t deserve her, and she definitely doesn’t deserve to be forced into loving me, a killer. I love her too much to force her to do anything.
She’s my mate and I’ll always be here to protect her, but if she doesn’t want my protection, then I won’t force her to take it. I’ll give her the choice to leave of stay. But right now, I’m not gonna worry about that. I’m just gonna stare at this beautiful creature before me. My mate.
