Chapter 40: A Break

Book:A Night With Him Published:2025-2-8

Lily sat on the couch with her phone in her hands as she scrolled through the internet. She was alone in the suite and bored.

After what happened in the morning, Axel left the suite without saying a word to her. She had cried so much and was tired of crying.

She decided to not think about it, it was her fault for getting her hopes high. She was supposed to know Axel can’t change, even if he would change, it can’t be out of the blue. It’s all her fault.

The door to the suite opened and she looked up to see Axel, she hurriedly stared back at her phone, she wasn’t ready to have a conversation with him.

“Go pack your bags, we are heading back to New York.” He ordered and Lily felt her heart shatter. He really doesn’t care, the only reason they came to Hawaii was so he can do his dirty work. And now that he is done, they are heading back home.

She didn’t give him a response, all she did was drop her phone on the bed and walk into the closet to pack her things.

AN HOUR LATER

Axel stared at Lily as her eyes were fixed on her phone, everywhere was silent unlike when they were flying to Hawaii. They were already on the plane and would be in New York in eight hours’ time.

Axel kept watching Lily, he was waiting for her to look up at him but she didn’t. When she got tired of going through her phone, she switched it off then relaxed in her seat and closed her eyes.

Axel understood how she felt but he wasn’t bothered. His business first before anything and should understand that.

That was the reason he got married to her in the first place, it’s her job. She got paid for it.

Whether she likes it or not, this is how things will be till their marriage contract is over.

Hours later, the plane landed in New York City. Lily was already awake, she wasn’t so comfortable with the nap she took. She couldn’t wait till they got back to the mansion so she could have a proper rest, besides, it was midnight already.

They both walked out of the plane and entered the car waiting for them, Lily didn’t say a word to Axel, and neither did he. The drive to the mansion was silent, immediately the call pulled over in the mansion, and Lily walked out and headed in.

She walked up the stairs, got into her room, and changed from her outfit.

She lay on the bed and fell asleep in minutes.

**********

Lily heard familiar giggles from her sleep and she groaned out loud, she wasn’t ready to wake up yet but the giggles were so loud and disturbing.

“Wake up, already.” She heard a voice say and she opened her eyes to see Nora.

“Nora?” Lily called surprised. What was more surprising was that Lily’s bags were opened and there were clothes all over the couch and bed. Clothes that Axel got for her.

“Lily.” Nora called with a smile and rushed to her, she sat on the bed next to her and smiled widely.

Lily raised her brow and stared at her with a questioning look, she was confused about why she was so happy.

“Come on. Spill it already.” Nora said and Lily was more confused.

“What? Spill what?”

“Things that happened on your honeymoon.” She replied and Lily sighed and rolled her eyes. She wasn’t expecting that question from Nora.

“Nothing happened.” Lily replied with a straight face and Nora scoffed.

“Oh, please. Don’t tell me that. Something clearly happened, there are a lot of designers in your bag and they are all new. And also, this is a new phone.” Nora said, stretching the phone to her. Lily took it from her and dropped it on the bed.

“The honeymoon was fine.” She replied simply and folded her arms. Nora’s smile slowly faded as she found Lily’s behaviour weird.

“Really? Just that? What about all the juicy details and all?”

“There are no juicy details Nora.” She replied and Nora sighed.

“Did Axel do something?” Nora asked.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Lily muttered in response and Nora sighed.

“It is fine. I understand how Axel can be but you know I am always here for you.” Nora assured her and Lily smiled a little at her, she also recalled Axel’s promise of always being there for her. It was all a lie.

She decided not to think about it again, she needed a break. She needed to get her mind off Axel. A thought suddenly popped into her head and she bit her lip.

“Nora.” She called and Nora smiled at her.

“Yeah?”

“You have your own place right?” Lily asked.

“You mean where I stay?” Nora asked and Lily nodded in response.

“Yeah, of course.”

“Okay. Can I come and stay with you for a while?” Lily asked and Nora stared at her with excitement written all over her face.

“Really?” She asked with a smile.

“Yes. But just for a few days, I just need to get a lot off my mind and I need a distraction.”

“You are so welcome.” Nora replied happily and Lily smiled.

“So, when do you want to… ”

“Can we go now?” Lily cut her off and she nodded with a smile.

“Of course.”

“Great. I will go get ready.” She replied and got off the bed. Nora was excited Lily would keep her company and they would get to do a lot of things together, while Lily was happy because she would be distracted from thinking about Axel or how messed up her life was.

Minutes later, Lily was ready and she had a small bag packed. She walked out of her room with Nora and they both headed down the stairs. Lily prayed she wouldn’t see Axel before they left but her prayers weren’t answered.

Axel was in the living room with Max. They looked up at them as she and Nora got to the living room. Axel stared at the bag in Lily’s hand and wondered what was going on.

“Hey, Lily.” Max called with a smile

“Hi, Max.” She replied.

“What’s with the bag?” Axel asked as he stood up and walked towards them. Lily turned to Nora for help but she gave Lily a look back and she turned to Axel.

“I… I want to spend a few days with Nora.” She said with a low voice and Axel looked at Nora.

“What? Don’t look at me, it was her idea, not mine.” Nora said and he looked at Lily.

Lily was scared he wouldn’t allow her, she couldn’t defy him, she had to do whatever he told her to do.

“Okay, you can go.” He replied and Lily sighed in relief, she almost smiled at him but she stopped herself from doing that. Nora let out a chuckle.

“But, you have to call me every day or send a text. Always be home before 9:00 pm and if you need to, call me.” Axel explained and she nodded in response. If he had said these things to her earlier yesterday, she would have believed him.

Now, her belief is that everything that comes from Axel is a lie, no matter how nice he acts.

“Here.” He said and stretched a black card to her.

“In case you need to get anything.” He added and Lily shook her head.

“I don’t want it, I don’t think we will be needing… ”

“Of course we will.” Nora cut Lily off and hurriedly took the card from Axel.

“Thank you, bye.” Nora said and pulled Lily out of the house.

“Who the hell rejects a black card?” Nora asked Lily as they both entered her car and all Lily did was shrug in response.

She sighed and played with her fingers. Her mind was troubled a little.

Is leaving Axel for a few days the best solution? Is she making a mistake? Will she regret her decision later on?
