POV: Claire
“Where are we going, Kyle, what do you have in mind?” I asked him as he sped along the busy road, driving so fast.
“slow down, Kyle!
Where are we going?” I asked him again, my eyes taking in the firm look on his face. We have been driving for over one hour and it’s beginning to look as if he doesn’t have any plans to check into a hotel or get a short-term apartment. He kept his eyes fixed on the road, ignoring me.
“Slow down, Kyle!
You’ll get us both killed!
You can end your life if you have a death wish, but don’t fucking take me you!
Slow this fucking car or pull over and let me out of here!” I scolded him furiously, earning a chuckle.
“I didn’t force you to come with me, Claire. You chose to be here, you insisted on being here. So shut the fuck up and let me think!” he yelled back at me, sounding so mean and angry.
“What did I do?” I thought within me. Why is he so angry with me?
If he didn’t want me here, he could have just said so. Why is he being mean to me?
I had so many questions, but he refused to respond to any of them. So I just kept quiet and looked out of the window, ignoring him. As I looked out of the window, I spotted a white SUV following behind us. It followed us everywhere and the guys in the front seat looked mean and dangerous.
I turned to Kyle immediately to tell him we were being followed. But it seemed like he had seen them already. He kept gazing at his rearview mirrors as he drove faster, trying to outrun them.
“Oh my God!
Oh my God!
Who are they and why are they following us?
How long have they been following us, what do they want from us?
Call the cops, Kyle. We need to call the cops!” I yelled in a panic, reaching for my phone to dial nine one one. But Kyle snatched my phone and turned it off immediately.
“Why?!
Why?!
Why would you do that?
Are you fucking insane, why won’t you call the cops, how are we supposed to get out of this?” I asked in frustration.
“The cops can’t help us, no one can. Now shut up and let me drive!” he scolded once more, eyeing me furiously. I gazed at him angrily, I couldn’t understand why he was acting so cool when our lives were in danger. I reached for my phone once more and he reached for it too and took it away from me. I struggled to get him to give me my phone, I needed to call the cops.
As I reached out to grab the phone one more time, I mistakenly bumped him in the shoulder and he swerved the car to the other side, causing a promotion in the traffic. When he was trying to get back on his lane, a huge Jn jewelry box fell out of his jacket and It flipped open when it fell, exposing its contents.
“You stole my sister’s diamond necklace?
Why, Kyle, why?” I asked him in frustration as I didn’t know what to think anymore. I just don’t understand him. He ignored me and picked it up quickly, putting it back in its box and hiding it in his jacket again. He was treating it like the most precious asset he has on him and it got me really curious because I still have no idea what is happening here.
“This diamond is our only chance of getting out of this in one piece. So zip it and let me get us out of this shit?” he scolded me.
“Really, Kyle?
Really?
You make it sound like you are doing me a favor here. How dare you talk about getting us out alive, how the fuck did you get me involved in your shitty deals!” I yelled furiously at him, my eyes tearing up.
“Save your tears, bitch!
You’ll need it when you meet him.” He told me, making me gasp in shock as he just called me a bitch. I turned to him angrily and he turned his eyes away from me, looking out the window. I followed his gaze and I noticed that the white SUV was no longer behind us. It seems like the chaos he caused when he swerved to the other lane had caused an accident that delayed them.
“Yeah!
I lost them!
I lost the motherfuckers!” he squealed excitedly, punching the air and speeding even more to put more distance between them. We got to a famous hotel in town and he pulled over quickly.
“Get the fuck down and hurry up!” he told me sternly, promoting get down quickly. He tipped the valet to get the car to the underground garage, but the valet rejected his money and refused to touch the car. He threw the money at him roughly and held my hand firmly, dragging me to the hotel’s entrance.
“You have been blacklisted, Kyle. You are not allowed into this building because we don’t want trouble. We don’t want his trouble today or even tomorrow. Try someplace else, maybe you might be lucky.” The doorman told him, smiling pitifully at us.
“Come on guys, don’t do this to me, don’t throw me out like that, please!
This was a fucking mistake and it could happen to anybody. This is your chance to do something good for me, I’ll owe you a favor if you can help me out, please. We can park this car in the garage and they won’t find it, I promise.” He pleaded with the doorman, sounding pitiful and frustrated.
“Look man, I have it all sorted out, okay. I have an irresistible offer for Dominic. What I have is ten times more than what I took from him. He would never resist my offer, and after he releases me, I’ll be right back on the street and it will be business as usual. It will be like it never happened, I’ll be back here to show some love to you two. Just help me out here before they find me, please.” He pleaded shamelessly, trying harder to push the wads of dollar bills in their hands.
“If you think you have it sorted out, then what the hell are you doing here?
You should be in his house, lying at his feet and begging for your life. For fucks sake, you didn’t just steal his goods, you fucking stole his car, asshole. I suggest you leave town immediately because no amount of money could buy his forgiveness. It’s a miracle that you are even still alive!” the valet told him, sounding irritated by his presence.
“You stole from your boss again?!
Wait!
The car!
It’s his car too, huh?
You stole your boss’s car!
You fucking stole his car and brought it to my house!
What the hell are you thinking, what is wrong with you?!” I yelled at the top of my voice, pushing him roughly on the chest and hitting him as hard as I could.
“Stop it, Claire!
Enough!
I won’t have you call me names too, I won’t let you disrespect me!” he scored me angrily.
“If I were you, young lady, I would run as fast as I could, run the other way, and don’t look back because they are coming for him and you will get in trouble as well. Any friend of this fool is as good as dead too. You are too pretty to be caught up in his mess, you need to leave now before it is too late!” the doorman told me urgently, there seriousness of his expression telling me how serious this situation was.
I turned to Kyle and he had this threatening look on his face, it looked as if he wanted to hit the doorman for daring to warn me to run away from him. I thought he would show a little compassion, or guilt for putting me through so much trouble. But he wasn’t ready to take the blame for any of this. If anything, he looked so angry that anyone should even dare to blame him.
That’s stupid!
It’s funny how this is exactly what my sister has been warning me about. But I didn’t listen because I was so blinded by my love for him. But now that I’m in this condition, I wish I’d listened to her. I wish I didn’t follow him out here and risk my life for him.
“I won’t get mixed up in your mess, Kyle. I love you, but I’m not dying because of you. Fix this mess before you come to me again. Take care of this and stay the fuck away from me!” I warned him, turning to the car to pick up my phone and leave. But he pulled me back and forced me up against the wall, holding me in one spot,
“Where the fuck do you think you are going?”
