chapter 69

Book:Married to a Retired Playboy Published:2025-2-8

Since Darryl had invited her to his office, Carolyn had been determined to get to the bottom of Tania’s game. It was better to interrogate Tania on her own before involving a third party.
With purpose-filled steps, Carolyn walked into D’Peters, her mind filled with the questions she intended to ask Tania. She had been looking forward to this moment, and she was determined to do anything to make Tania talk, even if it involved going fist by fist.
As she exited the elevator, she approached Darryl’s office door, ignoring Phoebe who was sitting at the reception counter before Darryl’s office door.
She took in a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for whatever the confrontation might yield.
As she entered the office, she sighted Darryl who was sitting behind his table with a gloomy look on his face. Her gaze moved around and stopped on Tania’s frame who was already sitting in Darryl’s office.
She wondered what Darryl and Tania were discussing before she entered the office.
“Hey” Carolyn said to Darryl, ignoring Tania.
Darryl greeted her with a nod, his face expressionless.
Tania, who was already seated in the office, had her eyes fixed on Carolyn with a mixture of curiosity. She sensed that something was about to happen, and she was mentally prepared for whatever Carolyn intended to do.
Tania kind of admired Carolyn’s loyalty to Darryl and Vanessa, but a part of her pitied Darryl because his attempt to use Carolyn against her had failed before it even started.
Carolyn’s gaze locked onto Tania, her eyes searched Tania’s face to know what she was thinking as she began to formulate her own strategy.
With the things she had heard about Tania, she was aware that Tania was a cunning woman who was dangerous at the same time. Carolyn adjusted to the seat, her movements deliberate and calm, and started to fire off her questions.
“Tania, now, you can tell that I’m not here to chat with you over a cup of coffee. I’m here for a serious conversation and I want you to be honest with me for your own good.” Carolyn said, her gaze remained fixed on Tania, sparking confidence.
“Can you tell me how you ended up knowing about Vanessa’s whereabouts?” Carolyn asked, her tone firm and controlled.
Tania smiled internally, but her face remained stoic, as she masked her expression under the Stoic look. Tania shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her eyes darting between Carolyn and Darryl.
“To be honest with you, I never intended to create a chaos like this one,” Tania said calmly.
Carolyn starred at her in confusion and Darryl, on the other hand, already knew that Tania would make things difficult like she always did.
“I remember telling Darryl that I would tell him about Vanessa’s whereabouts only if he accepts me as his betrothed.” Tania added, causing Carolyn to gasp in shock.
Carolyn’s eyes darted from Tania’s face to Darryl, who had chosen to remain silent during the conversation.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t get you.” Carolyn said, hoping she didn’t hear her well.
“Carolyn, you should understand me better than anyone else since you are married. What will you do if someone else comes for your man?”
Tania’s eyes never left Carolyn’s face, her gaze piercing into her as she waited for a response. Darryl could feel the air in the room thickening with tension, as Tania began to do her emotional trick on Carolyn.
“To start with, Vanessa never came for your man.” Carolyn snapped, pointing her finger to Darryl’s direction as she laid emphasis on the ‘man’.
“Darryl was the one who dragged her into this mess, she is innocent and clueless about the whole thing. Don’t you get it?” Carolyn said angrily.
How could Tania say such a thing about Vanessa? How could she say that Vanessa came for her man? Was Darryl ever hers in the first place? She wondered as she controlled her rage.
“Darryl would never be interested in her if she didn’t seduce him with her innocent act.” Tania countered Carolyn’s reply.
“You are delusional, Tania. It is time for you to wake up from your delusions. I was never yours and I will never be yours. Why is it so hard for you to get that into your thick skull?” Darryl interjected angrily.
He had kept quiet for a while, leaving the whole conversation thing to Carolyn, but as the whole situation is going, Tania is ready to manipulate Carolyn with her emotional blackmail card.
“My love, we are going through a rough phase now, but we will overcome it together. Don’t be deceived by these people, they don’t care about you like I do.” Tania said with a solemn voice, causing Carolyn to roll her eyes at her drama.
“Enough of all your drama. I’m not here to listen to your crazy love story. Where is Vanessa? Why did you see her or where are you keeping her?” Carolyn said with a frown on her face.
Her concern is finding Vanessa not to listen to Darryl and Tania’s drama. Her eyes remained on Tania as she waited for her response.
“I don’t know anything about Vanessa and her whereabouts.” Tania sighed in defeat. It was time for her to give up on the lie she had created before things got out of hand.
“You don’t know?” Carolyn and Darryl echoed in unison.
“For now, I don’t know. But I’m also looking everywhere for Vanessa.” Tania retorted.
“Are you crazy? Why are you looking for Vanessa? What business do you have with her?” Darryl asked before Carolyn could talk.
“Vanessa is a sweet soul, she has shown me nothing but kindness since I met her and I like her.” Tania answered.
“Ohh my God, Tania. Can you hear yourself? You just said Vanessa had shown you kindness since you met her, but what did you do? You took advantage of her kindness and manipulated her into hating me.” Darryl gabbled angrily.
Carolyn’s hand combed through her hair as she sighed in frustration. There was more to Tania and Darryl’s display, but she was not interested in finding out more. Her tolerance had reached its limit, and she was ready to go crazy if care was not taken.
“Are you saying that you don’t know anything about Vanessa’s whereabouts?” Carolyn asked, only to confirm what Tania had said earlier.
Before Tania could answer Carolyn, a knock on the door interrupted her. Phoebe’s head popped out through the door as she opened it.
“Mr Peter,” she decided to use his last name because he had company. “Someone is out here to see you.”
“I don’t want to see anyone, Phoebe.” Darryl snapped at her.
“He said his name was Emmy, and it is important to see you today,” Phoebe explained.
“Emmy?” Carolyn thought out loud.
“Emmy.” Darryl thought as he tried to remember where he had heard the name.
“Let him in after five minutes,” Darryl said to Phoebe, and she left after his response.
“Why is Emmy here?” Carolyn wondered, trying to figure out why Emmy had come to Darryl’s office.
