chapter 48

Book:Married to a Retired Playboy Published:2025-2-8

Darryl could not wrap his head around what had just transpired between Vanessa and the mysterious driver she called Emmy. Emmy, the name sounded familiar to Darryl, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t remember what he heard about Emmy.
His gaze moved from the road to Vanessa’s quiet frame sitting beside him in the car. He couldn’t tell if she was asleep or pretending to be asleep. All he saw was her chest moving rhythmically as she inhaled and exhaled.
His plan was to take Vanessa to his house, but with the unpleasant weather and Vanessa’s shaken condition, he had no choice than to drive to his parents’ house, which was a few minutes away from his current location.
Meeting his mother without planning beforehand was a dangerous thing to do, especially with Vanessa by his side, but Vanessa’s well-being was more important than anything his mother wanted to do. He is an adult, and he has every right to do what he wants. His mother should not force him into doing anything.
Darryl’s eyes keep flickering from the road to Vanessa’s face. His eyes moved from her eyelids, which were shut closed, to her nose, then to her lips, which were now pale. She must have caught a cold because she stubbornly walked in the heavy downpour.
Moving her gaze back to the road, she stepped on the accelerator, increasing the speed of the car. In no time, his car lurched into his parents’ house as he halted in front of the house.
With haste, he got out of the car and ran to Vanessa’s side. He unfastened the seat belt before wrapping his hands around her to carry her in bridal style. With profound steps, Darryl entered the house with Vanessa in his arms.
Sophie and Mrs Peter’s jaws dropped as they gasped in shock. They were not expecting Darryl to come unannounced and the fact that he came with a woman in his arms made the sight fascinating to behold.
Sophie might have enjoyed the sight, but Mrs Peter was not having it. Despite all her warnings, Darryl still disobeyed her. She gripped her phone tightly in her hand as she watched Darryl as he marched upstairs with Vanessa in his arms.
Ignoring her mother’s distaste, Sophie followed Darryl as he carried Vanessa to his room. Curiosity gnawed at her as she saw the woman her brother had brought in a wedding dress. She perceived there was more to the sight, and she couldn’t wait for her brother to spill the news to her.
Darryl fumbled to take off his suit from Vanessa’s unconscious body after he laid her on the bed in his former room.
“A damsel in distress?” Sophie winked at her brother.
“More like my wife.” He simply answered without turning his face away from Vanessa.
“I can help you get her changed if you want me to,” Sophie suggested.
“Sure. I should get one of my old hoodies and tracksuit.” With that, he excused himself to get the clothes.
“Here.” He passed the cloth to Sophie, who had her eyes fixed on Vanessa’s face.
Darryl excused himself again, giving Sophie a private moment to get Vanessa changed.
“Your wife? You never mentioned her to anyone,” Sophie said as she closed the door of the room behind her.
“I should have made a proper introduction, I’m sorry. Coming here wasn’t planned, but something came up, and we had to come here for shelter.” He clarified.
Confusion etched on Sophie’s face, but she nodded her head repeatedly to mask her confused look.
“Welcome back home, Sophie. I’m also sorry I didn’t call you to congratulate you earlier. No excuse can justify my mistake. If there’s a way I can make it up to you, let me know.”
It was hard for Darryl to balance his personal life and his family with business. Now, he must add Vanessa to the list of things he must always have in mind.
“Don’t worry about me, I understand you. But you can make it up to me by telling me about your wife.” Sophie grinned as she tried to persuade Darryl.
“To be honest, I just got married today. My wedding just happened a few hours ago.”
“What?” Sophie’s eyes widened in surprise. ” That’s unbelievable. You can’t get married without inviting your family to your wedding. You didn’t even tell us about it.”
“I just told you about it. Now you know that I’m married. Even my mother and father don’t know about it.”
“Now, I know about it.” Mrs Peter interrupted Sophie’s and Darryl’s conversation. She had been standing behind the stairs, listening to their conversation until she was forced to interrupt them.
“Mother,” Darryl tried to reason with her, but she shut him up.
“Don’t mother me, Darryl. I told you I wouldn’t accept any other woman. I warned you not to disobey me, but you refuse to obey me. You don’t have the right to call me your mother.”
“I told you I have someone who I want to marry, but you won’t listen to me.” Darryl countered her.
“You won’t marry anyone other than Tania. I won’t approve of any other woman other than Tania. Don’t you get it?” Mrs Peter said angrily.
“I would never marry Tania. I made myself clear, but you won’t let me be. If you are so interested in Tania, you can marry her yourself.” Darryl snapped. With that, he walked out of his mother’s, into his old room and shut the door behind him.
He had had enough of the conversation with his mother and he was tired of hearing the same thing over again. Nothing will make him marry Tania, not even his mother can make him.
Sophie was freezing on the spot as she watched the exchange of words between her mother and her brother. Who is Tania? Why does mother want Darryl to marry Tania? And why won’t Darryl marry Tania?
Her eyes moved from Darryl, who had just closed the door on her, to her mother, who had a furious look on her face. Darryl must have gotten on her nerves because she could kill anyone with the look on her face.
“Mom, calm down.” Sophie took her mother’s hand in hers as she pulled her away from the stars. Mrs Peter followed her daughter’s steps as they went down the stairs to the living room.
“Who is Tania?” She couldn’t help but ask her mother.
