MATTEO’S POV
Sitting across the table was one of my most trusted men, Carter. He leaned back on his chair and placed his legs on my desk, staring at me like I was a child that needed to spill some dark secret.
“What happened in here?”
I kept to myself. My hands dipped in my pockets and eyes, searching the forest just outside the window.
“Matteo?”. He called out, but I was too engrossed with the thoughts in my head.
I heard him sigh loudly before the shuffling sound of papers was heard.
“Since you won’t tell me. At least sign this. You bailed on your clients the last time, and they didn’t cancel the deal at least. All we have to do is ship the new stock to them”
“Then, do it. Why do you need me for this”. I asked, giving him my full attention.
“I don’t need you. I need you to sign these for it to happen. Look Matteo, you’ve been so invested in this finding your wife’s lover that you forget you have a business to run”
“And Diego?”. I asked.
“Locked up in the warehouse”
“I want to kill him”. I said with so much venom in my tongue.
“And why would you do that to your only lead at the moment? Sometimes I feel you don’t want to meet him. He knows who you are. He knows you have someone else. From the look of things Matteo, he has covered more grounds than you have in the last 6 months!”
I looked at him and he looked everywhere but at me “And the letter?”.
“We couldn’t find anything”
I sighed, took a deep breath, and pushed the books off my table.
“Matteo…”. Carter called out
“Let me do it”. I whispered.
“Are you out of your fucking mind? If you had listened earlier. We won’t be in this mess! Now, you want to take away our only lead again?”.
“And Charlie?”.
“He’s the perfect man for this job”
“Yes I am”. A voice at a far corner of the room said. It was the man who escorted Aria here earlier. I could trust him with my life. He was the best man for anything.
“Charlie!”. I laughed and pulled him in for a hug.
“We’re gonna fuck them up so bad. They won’t know what hit them”. Charlie said after a chuckle.
Just then, Alonzo rushed in. His breathe ragged and his eyes wide open. Charlie rushed to him, but the man withdrew himself from Charlie’s hold and gulped heavily.
“That bitch took Aria”. Alonzo said out of breathe.
“Fuck!!”. I exclaimed and rushed out of my study towards the parking lot only to see one of my cars taking a turn out of the compound. “Aria stole my fucking keys!!!”. I yelled
“Let’s use mine! C’mon!”. Charlie said and we rushed to his car. It was tinted black, just like his heart.
We could see my car speed down the road. Swerving from side to side. They took a sharp turn, and my eyes caught something rather interesting. My wife seated behind the wheels. Her tiny hands gripped the steering wheels. She looked happy. I’m happy to be leaving me, and that ignited something in me. Anger. I wanted to teach her a lesson. She sped down the road, and I watched Charles accelerate his car.
“It’s Aria driving”. I said much to my own surprise.
“You mean, it ain’t thered-haired woman?”. He asked, completely taken aback.
“Yes”
Charles took that turn, and we couldn’t find my car anywhere around.
“We lost them”. I uttered
“Damn she is fast”. He said, his eyes searching around looking for any sign of the car, and then I saw it in a distance. Just beside an ice cream truck.
“You don’t think she went through all that trouble for some ice cream?”.
“I don’t care. She’ll get what’s coming for her”. I said while jumping off the car.
My legs hurried to where they stood just outside the truck and enjoyed their cold snack. I watched her taste off the cream from her fingers and take a large bite from her cone. Rosalie, her friend, glanced at me and screamed. It alerted Aria, who looked around, fear in her eyes as she searched till she saw me walking towards them. Her cone fell from her hand, and she was just about to make a run for it, but Charlie got to her just in time.
“Not so fast missy”. He said.
Her shoes were just as tiny as her feet, and she had that look in her eyes. She was frightened. I wanted to get to her and pull her into my arms, but her friend blocked my path
“Get away from her”. She sneered
“Step away”. I said politely.
“You’re not gonna let Dennis see him, are you?”. Rosalie said to Aria, and I saw my wife turn completely white.
“Dennis?”. I asked
“Yes dennis! The love of her life!”. She sang
I felt a knot in my chest, but my composure didn’t quiver.
“You stole my keys! ” I yelled at Aria, but she looked at her feet instead
“Aria…”. Rosalie sang. “Tell them to leave so Dennis won’t see this. Give him the keys. We’ll find our way back”.
I stiffened “Who’s Dennis?”. This time, I looked Aria in the eyes and asked.
She gasped softly and averted her eyes. I was growing impatient as I pushed back my hair already frustrated with the time I was already wasting because of two grown women. Pushing Rosalie out of the way, I rushed to my wife, slung her tiny weight over my shoulder, and began walking to my car.
“Let her go!”. I heard her best friend scream at the back but I kept moving.
Throwing her carelessly into the passenger seat that she hit her head slightly. I heard her whimper. I wanted to soothe the pain, but the thought of ‘Dennis’ pulled me away.
Getting into the driver’s seat, I sped off with my her by my side.
