AUTHOR’S POV
GAVIN HALF SAT ON HIS ROOM DESK NEXT to the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a glass of white wine. The room was dimly lit and grim, matching the look on his face.
His heart bled as his mind waltzed back to earlier. What hasn’t he given Sydney before? Why did she want to leave him so badly? Fine, he told her he didn’t want her in his life again but he didn’t expect her to find another man.
She wasn’t affected by him anymore. She hated his kiss and touch. The thought made Gavin go crazy.
He drank the whole glass of wine and grimaced at the sour taste.
” F**k it!” He growled and ran a hand through his hair. ” She wants to elope with him.” He filled the glass and emptied it immediately.
” She wants to leave me so bad she used her mother to try to get to me.” He stood, raising his hand in the air.
” God knows what she’d done with that guy. Yes, I cheated on her but that’s because she freaking made pushed me to. She depressed me. I loved her but she never loved me. She loved that wretched guy! ”
Gavin lost his cool. He raised the glass to throw it at the door but stopped when the door opened.
He dropped his hand slowly when he saw Sydney, her dark eyes firmly fixed on him. She looked like she walked out of a horror movie.
Gavin dropped the glass and glanced at her, slightly drunk.
” Are you already back from your voyage with your boyfriend? I thought you’d never return. Well, I guess you are full of surprises. ” He said sarcastically and laughed.
Sydney walked to him in eerie silence.
He filled the glass with wine and when he turned around, she was in front of him.
He raised the glass to her. “Have a drink sweetheart, you look dry. ” He said with a scowl.
Sydney jerked the glass from his grip and poured the wine on his face then threw the glass fiercely to the window.
Gavin wiped his face, his mouth agape in surprise. ” What the hell? Have you lost your mind?!”
Sydney jumped in brusquely, ” Yes, Gavin, I’ve lost my mind.”
Gavin looked straight into her eyes, his teeth gritted. ” Clearly.”
Sydney lost her senses. She shoved him by his chest so hard, he fell on the bed. ” You must be celebrating Gavin. After all, you have gotten what you wanted, isn’t it?”
Avery stood by their room door, watching them with glitz. Finally! This would be fun, she thought.
Gavin shot out of the bed and snarled. ” You think I’m happy with you being with another man?”
” You are so stupid Gavin, sometimes I reckon your mum dropped you when you were a baby because you are so dum and full of yourself-”
” Don’t dare-”
” No, it’s my turn to speak and your turn to for once, shut up.”
” I begged you to help me, Gavin, but you didn’t. Just twenty million Gavin, you have billions, but you refused to give me. If it hadn’t occurred to you, my mother is dead. If you think I’m lying, check the news, the internet, everywhere, my mother is dead. She’s gone and she’s never coming back all because of you.” Sydney cried out.
Gavin’s wide eyes stared at her in shock. He didn’t want to believe her, so he took out his phone, turned it on, and various news updates about Ashley’s death came to display.
His hand trembled and he couldn’t muster up the courage to look at Sydney.
Sydney spoke in his silence. ” She was just starting to be happy, Gavin; you and I know what she’d been going through. I went to visit Mum a month ago; I got to realize she had cancer. Gabriel helped me pay for her first treatment, despite not knowing my mother, he was there for her. But you let her die when you could have helped her.”
” She considered you as a son she never had. Even when she knew what you did to me, she advised me to stay with you. I wish I hadn’t listened; I should have just carried my kids and stayed in Arizona with her. Maybe she’d be alive. ”
Gavin looked at her, his eyes gleaming with tears. ” I’m sorry.”
Sydney said in an injured tone. ” For once, Gavin just once, I begged you to help me. I begged you to do something for me. Sorry, won’t bring my mother back to me. Sorry won’t change anything that had happened. Sorry, can’t fix anything, Gavin. I’m tired, I’m tired of you. I hate you so much; I wish it was you who died instead of my mother.”
She wiped her tears and looked at him squarely in the eyes. ” If you want me out of your life so badly, fine. This thing we call a marriage is over.”
Gavin’s eyes widened and he said sharply. ” Sydney-”
He was cut off when she went to the chifforobe and took out the document on it. Gavin watched her trembling as she signed the papers quickly without even reading through them.
When she was done, she walked to him and threw the papers at him. ” I’m taking my kids and leaving you and your concubine alone. If you ever had a bit of love for me, don’t stop me.”
Gavin couldn’t stop her. He was ashamed of himself for letting his jealousy get the best of him. He had no wife and no mother-in-law anymore.
He watched helplessly as Sydney walked to the door and stopped when she saw Avery.
Sydney said in a weak tone, ” You’ve gotten what you wanted, I hope you are happy?”
Avery smirked and replied coolly. ” Never been better, now get out of this house.”
Sydney stared at Avery for a while, she couldn’t fathom how she’d turn this cruel. There was no speck of regret in her eyes.
Sydney went to Ethan and Emily’s room. They were asleep, it wasn’t like them to be asleep by this time. She didn’t want to wake them up, but she had to. God knows how they’d feel when they hear their grandmum is gone.
” Get up, we are leaving.” She said as they sat up, yawning.
” Where are we going to mummy?” Emily inquired with sleepy eyes while Ethan stared at the dried tears on Sydney’s cheek.
Sydney smiled avoiding Ethan’s eye contact. ” We’ll stay with Sofia tonight.”
” But why? Can’t we stay here?” Ethan asked incredulously.
” No Ethan, we can’t stay here, dress up and don’t ask me questions.”
Sydney called a nearby Uba driver. Within, thirty minutes, Sydney and her kids were in the Uba, heading towards Sofia’s.
Emily slept on Sydney’s lap while Ethan looked at his mother who was staring out the window.
He knew why they were leaving. He knew it would happen eventually.
” We aren’t going back there again, are we? ” Ethan said.
Sydney shut her eyes, ” Never again. “
