Jade’s pov:
2 weeks into the training, and I started having a good grasp of the concept, which up till now had been totally foreign to me. Annabelle’s diaries definitely hadn’t covered much… but then again, she must have only jotted down what she knew of, what she experienced.
“Your wolf is here to guide you,” Paulina never failed to remind me. “Trust her but don’t let your instincts take over. Remember that you have witch blood in your veins. And witchcraft is all about giving something, in return for something else.”
According to her and I could only trust her since the Alpha King himself trusted her being a born healer meant I was a wolf but also a witch. Having grown up in a pack, it was only natural that the wolf manifested first. Sometimes, the witch side of a healer could stay dormant for years. Mine was triggered because of my emotions.
I didn’t understand the specifics of how this gene was passed down to me, but Paulina told me I was a light witch all born healers were.
I was dubious at first, but upon learning a few spells, and trying them, I was surprised to see that they worked. And it never failed to amaze me.
Soon, I began to consume the ancient looking book she gave me like it was candy. I had always been an avid learner, and I reasoned that learning a few basic spells could come in handy one day.
We were training on my focus, which would be required for the actual healing part, when Anna approached me for the first time, on steady legs, never stopping till she grabbed my legs in the way all toddlers did.
Her mother soon had an apologetic smile on her face, but I didn’t mind taking a break.
“Alpha,” she muttered in a soft tone of voice, but it was audible to my wolf ears.
“Yes, I am mated to an alpha,” I retorted sweetly while patting her head affectionately. I was happy she had warmed up to me enough to approach me.
Only the little one shook her head negatively as if to tell me I didn’t understand her. I raised an eyebrow at Paulina who only shrugged in response. Admittedly, I didn’t expect the mother to know what her daughter meant.
Anna put her hand on my belly and caressed it a little bit awkwardly. Then, raising her head, she looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Alpha of Alphas.”
My eyes widened at once, only partly in disbelief, despite the mild confusion. A servant who was passing by there were always a few of those around, maybe out of curiosity, possibly because they were instructed to gasped in shock as well, before scurrying away.
Mom, who had been training not too far from us, saw the servant leave the forest in haste, and sought me out at once.
“What’s wrong, sweetie?” She asked in a soft tone of voice, a small indulgent smile at the sight of Anna hugging my legs.
I kept patting the little girl on the head and said, “I don’t know yet.”
That’s when Paulina spoke at long last, “My little Anna isn’t weird or socially awkward really. She has the ability to foresee things, incidents…”
She trailed off, looking at me, as if asking me whether I wanted to share the rest with mom or not.
“And she just caressed my belly, saying Alpha of Alphas,” I finished for her on a sigh that spoke louder than any words could about my worries.
What did Anna see?
Mom’s eyes grew comically wide.
“Do you know what this means?” She squeaked out, seemingly on the verge of hyperventilating, frozen in place as she was.
“A really strong alpha?” I let out tentatively, even though deep down I knew the revelation meant more troubles.
“THE strongest alpha,” mom insisted. “Call your mate, sweetie, before things become troublesome here.”
“What do you mean?” I frowned in utter and complete confusion. “Troublesome how?”
“Do it,” Paulina let out in a serious tone of voice, agreeing with mom without the slighltest hesitation. “I will put down a barrier.”
“A barrier?” I echoed after her incredulously. “What for?”
“The Alpha King is away on business,” she explained, nodding at me as she did so, “And this might be the best opportunity for some unexpected incident to happen…”
“I don’t get it,” I sighed, shaking my head negatively.
“Just call Alexander,” mom commanded again in a somewhat annoyed tone.
I grabbed my phone out of the pocket of my pants, and soon was calling the man I loved with all my heart, the man I might be putting in danger again…
“Hello, love,” he soon greeted me, his tone of voice as soft and indulgent as ever.
“Hey,” I choked on the word, just barely able to keep the sniffle at bay.
“What’s wrong, love?” He asked in a worried tone of voice. “It’s rather early for you to call me. I also don’t like your voice. Tell me. I am already on my way to you, and only about 1 hour till I arrive.”
“You’re on your way?” I let out partly in disbelief, partly in happiness.
“I wanted it to be a surprise, but I guess it can’t be helped…” I could almost imagine him smirking as he said so.
Boy did I miss him! I missed everything about him. Hell, the mere sight of him could be enough to soothe my frayed nerves right now.
“Do tell me what’s wrong, love,” he then implored me.
Before I could even breathe a word, mom declared ominously, “She’s coming.”
I knew who she meant without even having to ask. The Alpha King’s mother had rubbed us off the wrong way when we first met her, and rumor had it that she was always difficult with everyone.
I inhaled deeply, even as Paulina winked at me, “The barrier is in place. Don’t worry.”
“Why is she telling you not to worry? And who’s coming?” Alex asked urgently, even as I heard him instruct whoever was driving, “Hit the gas, Cole.”
I inhaled deeply, fearing for my unborn baby, for my mate, mom, Paulina, Anna, and myself… But I knew I couldn’t keep quiet, for that would be putting everyone in double the danger.
“Mom and Paulina have reasons to believe I am in danger,” I declared in a broken tone of voice.
“Why? What happened?” He was confused and partly angry too. “You should be at the safest place I know.”
I wanted to argue that the safest place I knew was by his side or in his arms, but now wasn’t the time for this.
“It would appear that I am pregnant with an Alpha… The Alpha of Alphas. And the Alpha King is away, but his mother is seeking me now.”
“Fuck!” Alex rarely ever cursed, and he was doing so now… That had the knack to make me worry as well. “Stay safe,” he told me urgently.
I let out a noncommittal sound in the back of my throat and said, “I love you.”
If this was to be our goodbyes, I wanted him to know that I loved him.
“I am not doing this,” he told me gravely. “I will be there in 40 mn tops.”
And with that, the line went dead.
