I play with my fingers while we wait for the doctor to return with the test results. I had failed to dodge Beau at the hotel, so now we’re at the hospital. And I can’t stop worrying about the results of the tests I was given, because I’m pretty sure I already know what’s wrong with me. I’m praying I’m mistaken, but all the signs say otherwise.
“Why is your leg shaking?” Beau asks, placing his hand on my thigh.
“No reason.” I move out of his hold and bite my lip.
“Are you worried something might be wrong with you?” Beau asks, concerned.
“Not really.”
Beau is about to say something else but stops as the door opens behind us. The doctor walks in, smiling. My stomach drops. Her expression alone tells me the results of the test. Dad is going to kill me.
“The test results are back, and I have wonderful news,” the doctor’s smile widens as she speaks, “Mrs. Williams is preg-”
“I’m pregnant,” I blurt out, cutting her off. She nods in affirmation, still wearing that wide grin on her face. “Oh my God, I’m pregnant.” I abruptly stand from the chair and begin to pace. I pass my hand through my hair as the reality of that word echoes in my mind.
My head whips to Beau. He’s been totally silent. “Say something.” I shake the chair he’s sitting on to bring him back to earth.
“It seems you both need some privacy to talk,” the doctor says. “I’ll be outside if you need me.”
“Oh my God, you’re pregnant!” Beau says as soon as the door closes. His face lights up with a smile. He seems…happy. How can he not be worried and scared that we are having a baby? “This is amazing!” he walks over to me and places his palms on my face. His beautiful gray eyes are sparkling with excitement. His happiness is so evident. He kisses my forehead and wraps his arms around me.
“Are you crazy? Being pregnant with your child is amazing?” I push at Beau’s chest and move out of his arms. How can he say that? I can’t believe how foolish I was to have unprotected sex with him…multiple times. I don’t even understand how I forgot to get on the pill or ask him to use a condom.
“It’s amazing because you are the love of my life, and there is no one else who I would want to bear my child.” He stares into my eyes, and, shockingly, I see no hint of a lie in his gaze. How is that possible?
“You’re engaged, Beau, in case you’ve forgotten.” I look away from his deceiving eyes. I can’t think straight with him looking at me like that.
“Fuck my engagement. With you pregnant, it’s no longer valid.”
I place a hand over my open mouth as realization dawns. “Oh my God, this is why you came back.” Tears fill my eyes as all the pieces begin to make sense. How could I be so stupid? “I can’t believe I let you play me again.”
“Delilah, I don’t like the sound of your voice. What are you talking about?”
“You used me!” I smack Beau hard across the face, and my tears spill over.
He touches his left cheek and looks at me, confused and shocked. He must not have thought I’d catch on to his plan.
“Delilah, why do I feel like that slap was not because I got you pregnant? What do you think I’ve done?”
“You fucking used me to get out of your arranged marriage.” My finger pokes into his chest as I spit every word. “How could you do this to me, Beau? How could you get me pregnant just so you wouldn’t have to marry the girl your family picked for you? How could you use me like this?” My voice cracks, along with my heart.
“Delilah, I swear to you, that’s not why I got you pregnant. Please, believe me.” Beau tries to reach for me, but I move away.
“Don’t touch me.” I wrap my hands around my body and stare at Beau as hatred fills my heart.
“Delilah, please listen to me; I did not get you pregnant solely for that reason.”
“What other reason did you have, then? Fucking tell me!” I scream at him.
“Because I love you, and that’s the only way I can fucking be with you!” He roars back.
“What?” I look at him, confused.
“I love you, Delilah. Yes, I got you pregnant to force the Clarks to call off the wedding, but also so that I could be with you.” Beau moves closer to me, placing his hands on my cheeks. “I swear to you on my life and the life of our baby. Please believe me.” He places his forehead against mine and wipes my tears away.
My mind is spinning. I…I can’t do this. Not anymore. “I don’t believe you,” I say in a voice that doesn’t sound like my own. I step away from him, and his hands drop to his sides.
“Please believe me.” There’s desperation in his voice.
“I’m sorry, Beau. I can’t.” Turning my back, I walk towards the door and place my hand on the knob. “You got me pregnant, and I believe it’s to get out of your arranged marriage and for no other reason. I will never forgive you for this.” I walk out the door. The second I do, the tears I was holding back before stream down my face. God! I feel like the most foolish person in the world right now.
