Keep Pretending

Madam Johanna did not even flinch, the chairman’s wife is really something,” Kc said with a smile as she saw Johanna’s unresponsive reaction.
Kc looked at Victoria and was surprised; she did not expect Victoria to have no reaction either. But she grinned, thinking that Victoria might just be pretending to be calm. “Victoria, you’re still pretending to be calm, come on, take out your cellphone and take a selfie,” she said before crossing his arms.
“Yes, indeed, at least you can show off to your poor circle that you were able to step into this high-end establishment,” Erica added.
Manager Jen looked at Johanna, “Won’t you thank Johanna for being able to come to such a high-end place like this?” she said arrogantly.
Johanna heard Manager Jen’s comment and regained her composure before showing off a smug face. “Victoria, not everyone like you, who lives in the mountains, gets to eat in such luxurious places. Shouldn’t you show some gratitude too?” Victoria smiled provocatively,
“Thank you, dear princess, for being so generous and bringing me to a lavish restaurant where a set of food costs $300, 000.”
Johanna stiffened and couldn’t react. Kc frowned before approaching Johanna, taking the menu, and looking at the dishes. “These are premium dishes. I wouldn’t be surprised why they cost so much to dine here.”
Erica also sat beside Kc and looked at the menu, “Wow, they all look delicious.”
“What is wrong with you all?” Manager Jen said before taking the menu and handing it to Johanna, “Let Madam choose her dish first,” she said smiling at Johanna.
Johanna forced a smile before looking at the menu. She felt dizzy seeing the prices, nearly breathless, ‘It’s so expensive. If we combine all our orders, it might reach half a million.’
She casually chose a few dishes, and what she picked already amounted to $80, 000. The others made their selections as well. Johanna’s head was aching after seeing the food they wanted to order, ‘Damn these shameless people, they chose dishes even more expensive than mine.’
Victoria noticed the frustration on Johanna’s face and smiled, “Little princess, I won’t take advantage of your kindness, so I’ll pay for my own meal.”
Hearing this slightly eased Johanna’s worries, but she would still have to spend at least $300, 000 for this dinner. She hid her reaction and showed a forced smile to Victoria, “In that case, I won’t insist on you.”
Kc looked at Victoria disapprovingly, “Hey Victoria, do you really want to pretend to be rich?” She grinned.
Madam was treated well at dinner, what do you mean?” Erica asked.
Johanna shook her head with a disgruntled face, seeming annoyed, ‘what is wrong with these two fools, instead of lessening what I’ll pay, they’re really provoking Victoria, damn them!’
Victoria smiled calmly, “It’s okay, I’m not that shameless to choosing food that is more expensive than the host’s dinner.”
The three felt embarrassed and unsure of what to say. “What we ordered doesn’t matter, for the chairman’s wife, even a million dollar is just spare change,” Erica said.
“Why haven’t you chosen your food yet? Don’t tell me you just want water?” Kc added before laughing.
Manager Jen grinned before shouting, “Waiter, please prepare our order.”
But no one responded, so she yelled again, “Waiter, we’ve already chosen our food.”
Still, no response came.
“Is this place soundproof, Manager Jen?” Erica suggested.
Manager Jen nodded before standing up from her chair and opening the door to check. As she opened the door, she furrowed her brow upon seeing no one around. “Is there nobody?” she muttered, returning inside to find Victoria struggling to suppress her laughter as if she had seen a joke.
“What’s so funny, Victoria?” Manager Jen asked, frowning.
Victoria waved her hand,”It’s nothing, Manager Jen. Madam Johanna knows how to place orders here; you don’t need to shout because Madam Johanna is a regular here,” she said with a smile before looking towards Johanna.
Johanna panicked, ‘Curse you, Victoria! What do I know about this place? This is my first time eating at this restaurant.’ She thought before putting on a hesitant smile, “Yes, of course.”
“If you knew, Madam, why didn’t you tell me? I was shouting for no reason,” Manager Jen said before sitting next to Johanna.
Seeing the hopeful looks on the faces of the three, along with Victoria’s irritating smile, Johanna didn’t know what to do. She started to stand up and looked around for a device to signal assistance. She saw a button near the door and pressed it repeatedly, but nothing happened. The three looked puzzled, and Victoria continued to smile.
“Madam, is there a problem?” Erica asked.
Johanna awkwardly smiled, “I think the ringer is broken.”
“In that case, we really need to go outside to make a call,” Manager Jen suggested.
Johanna felt embarrassed, “Oh, yes, that’s right.”
“Madam, you’re a regular here; you should know that switch is just for display and serves no purpose,” Victoria suddenly remarked.
Erica turned to Victoria, “What do you mean, Victoria? Who is the regular here? Is it you or Madam Johanna?”
With a gentle smile, Victoria responded, “I don’t mean anything by it. Perhaps Madam Johanna is just confused. You know she’s been busy lately, sitting around with nothing to do at work. Maybe she’s stressed and forgot.” sarcastically she said. ‘Keep pretending, let’s see how far you can go with this act.’
‘Damn, Victoria, why does it seem like she is so familiar with this place? Has she dined here before? Is Victoria just playing tricks on me? That’s impossible!’ Johanna looked at Victoria, unsure of what to do.
“Madam, are you okay?” Kc asked worriedly, concerned that she might not enjoy a luxury food today.
Johanna smiled awkwardly, “It’s okay, yes, right, this isn’t it, it’s the one on the other side,” she said before pointing to what seemed like a doorbell on their side of the door. She was sure this was the real switch, ‘why do they need to have the same appearance?’
“Madam, are you sure about this?” Erica asked with a hint of hesitation in her voice upon seeing Johanna’s unsure expression.
“Erica, are you doubting madam? She’s not like a country bumpkin who is clueless and constantly questioning madam’s abilities,” Kc said before grinning and giving a meaningful look to Victoria.
Manager Jen nodded in agreement, “Of course, madam knows what she’s doing, and you know she’s stressed with work, especially with that unpleasant woman in our team,” she added, glancing at Victoria.
Johanna smiled and felt reassured after hearing their words, “Don’t worry, this switch is connected to their server, so when I press it, someone will come shortly to take our order,” she said before walking towards the switch.
Victoria smiled as she watched Johanna walk toward the other side of the door, as if she were waiting for a good show.
