Luca stared
Adonis stared back.
He raised an eyebrow at him.
Adonis nodded
“You’ve got to be kidding me. What is this? A Telemundo series?”
This was too complicated for a girl living a simple life. H*ll, it was all too much for him to take in, and he’d seen worse.
Gambling and the Grecos in one sentence? The Grecos would do anything for money. Their separation from the family is a testament to that. Surely it was going to be a catastrophe. The wheels kept turning in his head. He unconsciously cracked his knuckles.
“How exactly did he get involved with the Grecos? I don’t think gambling was the only reason they crossed paths.”
Adonis hummed in agreement.
“The gambling facade is just a major trick in reviving their plans. From what I found out, I believe Kane approached Cara intending to fuel her father’s gambling habits. His past activity showed that he had always been a gambler, but it became worse when he lost his wife.”
“She’s also not her biological mother?”
“No. She isn’t.”
“F*ck. She’d been living a lie her whole life.” Luca cussed, then paused as a realization dawned on him.
“But wait, if her father isn’t the main target, that means they want Cara. What are you going to do about this?”
Adonis opened his mouth to reply, but a loud painful, unconscious groan came out instead. Suddenly, his gaze became blurry, and he reclined further onto the sofa. It seemed as though the frequent talking seemed to be making the migraine worse.
He could hardly see clearly.
Already used to the situation, Luca sprung to his feet to get a glass of water and the medication that was stored on a shelf beside the sofa.
He handed it to Adonis and helplessly watched as his friend took his medication, tightly shutting his eyes and taking deep, steady breaths in an attempt to calm the pain. He wished there was something he could do to make him feel better, but the truth remained that there was none.
There was nothing anyone could do. Not even the medical practitioners.
This was another part of Adonis no one understood. Ever since he was a child, he’d have special random episodes of headaches that sometimes tended to grow into full-blown migraines.
Even after running a series of medical tests, the particular cause and trigger remain unknown, and the only solution was to suppress the pain using medications that were also starting to fail as Adonis’s episodes were becoming more frequent than usual.
He took his seat again, silently hoping that they’d find a cure as soon as possible. He placed a firm hand on Adonis’s knee.
“Feeling better?”
Adonis slowly pried his eyes open; when he saw that he did it with less difficulty, he took that as a positive sign and slowly sat upright. He cleared his throat.
“Yeah, thanks. What was I saying?”
“If they’re after Cara?”
“Right. I don’t know exactly why they’re after her. For now, all we can do is watch and protect her.”
Luca agreed
“What are you going to do about her father? Even if she doesn’t know about the things he hid from her, it was still her choice to make.”
“I doubt anyone would care about a man who had been regularly paid for years to hide her identity. How else do you think he fueled his gambling habits all these years without his family noticing? Remember our third raid in Italy? The one where Logan Greco was involved?”
“Yeah?”
“Her father was one of their top clients. He lost everything he had, so he needed to get money one way or another. That’s all I know for now. I can’t trace anything from there. It’s as if someone intentionally covered all the tracks.”
“So everyone is in on it except her?”
Adonis gave a sadistic smile.
“That I also do not know; her mother’s dead, so I’m not sure if she was aware. I just got so lucky and decided to kill one bastard with another. For a fake pretend father, he was a greedy fool.” Adonis murmured.
Luca stared at his friend. At first, he thought Adonis had gone off on his own to cause some trouble, but with what he had just heard and the right plan, they could take out the Grecos for good. They’d have to tread carefully, he concluded.
“I’m in, but like you said, we’re not telling anyone yet. Especially your grandfather; should we tell her?” He referred to Cara. “It’s about her life anyway.”
Adonis chuckled.
“And have her change her mind? No, thank you. For now, she can never know.”
Just then, the door connecting the living room to the dining room swung open.
“I can never know what?”
