Mirabelle’s POV
The news about Natasha being the one behind the rumors didn’t leave my mind; even by the next morning, I was on my way to work, and that was all I could think about.
I mean, it wasn’t that deep; if she really wanted my husband, seeing as Noah wanted her too, the least they could do was have each other and leave me out of the picture.
What was the need to ruin me along the way? That was what I didn’t understand.
“Mrs Sylvester, we are here already.” My driver announced, and I came out of my reverie; I didn’t even realize that the car had come to a stop already.
“Thank you, Raymond.” I thanked the chauffeur.
Honestly, I didn’t know the courage that brought me to work this morning; maybe part of the reason was that I already knew who was behind this, and I suddenly had that courage that I could pull through this without going under.
“Are you sure about this, Mrs Sylvester? The paparazzi are everywhere and won’t let you have an easy day.” Raymond shared his concerns, and I smiled slightly.
“Thank you very much, Raymond, but don’t worry about it. There are things I need to attend to; those stupid board members will think I’m giving in to them if I don’t come to work, so I should do that.” I told him, and he nodded through the rearview mirror.
“All right. Have a nice day.” He said, and I nodded.
I exited the car, and my personal assistant was waiting for me. She had a worried look on her face, and I frowned.
“Good morning, Mrs Sylvester.” She greeted.
“Morning Susie, why do you look like you’re about to be swallowed by the ground?” I asked her as she collected my bags from me.
“Well, there are two things. Paparazzi is out front; it’s like they’ve been waiting for you, and that’s how it has been since you haven’t come to work.” She told me.
“Well, thankfully, they can’t see me because they don’t know this entrance. I’m surprised that this entrance has not been compromised yet.” I told her as we walked towards the elevator that would lead me straight to my office.
Noah brought up this idea; he told me he had something like this in his own companies, too, and it helped.
“Well, I don’t think it is possible to be compromised when I’m the only one who knows about it in the whole company.” She said.
“Well, that’s true; now tell me, what’s the other thing?” I asked.
She paused for a while, the sound of the elevator brought her out of a reverie.
“Well, Mrs Sylvester, the b-board m-m….”
“Do I look like a scarecrow?” I asked her, cutting her off.”
“I’m sorry, what?” She asked as we both entered the elevator.
“You heard me; I’m sure you know I hate repeating myself.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Then, explain why you’re stuttering,” I told her.
“W-well I-I”
“What are the two things I hate, Susie?” I asked her.
“You hate repeating yourself and people that stutter.” She said.
“Good now, let’s do that again; what’s the next thing that has you bothered this much to the point of stuttering?” I asked.
“The board is discussing my employment.” She said in one breath, and I frowned.
“Your employment?” I asked her.
“Yes, they want to lay me off.” She said.
“That’s why you’re in this state?” I asked her.
“Ma, it’s my job. I can’t help but be in this state. My job is my life.” She said, and I almost chuckled.
“I know, you really need to find something to do apart from this job,” I told her, and she shrugged.
“For now, this is what I can handle. And this is how I react to the news of getting fired.”
“Who hired you, Susie?”
“You, Mrs. Sylvester.” She replied.
“I’m surprised that you know that, ’cause if you knew that, why would you be panicked that you’ll be fired?”
“Because it’s not only my employment that’s been discussed. They are meeting right now to lay off all the people you employed; they feel they will be involved in the rumors, too.” She said.
“The fucking nerve of these old hags, and since when have they been discussing it?” I asked as the elevator opened, and we started walking to my office.
“Just this morning.”
“Now, I need you to know something. I hired you, and I’m the only one with the right to fire you. So don’t be bothered.” I told her, and she smiled.
“Thank you, Mrs Sylvester.” She said, holding my door open for me.
I didn’t sit down, though; I dropped my bags and put on my glasses; it was time that I set these older people in their place.
“Now, you said the meeting is being held in the boardroom, right?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“By the board members?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Let’s go,” I told her and left my office.
In as much as it was Noah who helped build my company into something this huge, I was still the one who worked through the good and the bad times, and I wasn’t going to let anyone ruin it for me.
Noah and Natasha might have succeeded in burning down the other company and sinking my ships, but I’m not going down without a fight now that I know where the attacks are coming from.
This situation made me realize that fighting a blind battle can cripple you, but now that I knew the people that were behind all this, I was going to give them a show.
Some employees greeted me as I walked by; I could see the panic on their faces. They thought they were about to be laid off, but that is not happening. As much as this company was still in my name, nobody got fired without my approval.
When I got to the boardroom entrance, I took a deep breath, and Susie opened the door.
I stepped into the large setting and stood at the head of the table with a big smile.
“Now, now, now, ladies and gentlemen, what’s this I hear about a meeting being held in my company, without my approval?”
