Noah’s POV.
“Oh, you never mentioned that,” she said, turning to look at me.
I had wanted to tell her about my lunch with the investors, but she seemed preoccupied, lost in thoughts, and stressed out lately.
So I decided to keep the information to myself.
“I guess I forgot,” I said with a shrug, then stood up, walked to the dressing table, and sprayed a mix of Dior and Chanel perfumes. After that, I approached her and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
Noticing how shy she became after the kiss, it was clear she hadn’t gotten over the tension between us from last night. I decided to let her be for a moment, but soon I saw her shyness shift to worry.
Her brows furrowed, and her gaze dropped. Just as I was about to ask what was wrong, she spoke up first.
“Are you okay? You seem stressed.” She asked, lifting her hands to cup my face.
A low smile crept onto my face. She had been quite busy lately, and at first, I thought it was because being here made her miss Ken. I imagined she was using work as a distraction to push him out of her mind.
I felt a bit sad. But then, maybe I was just overthinking things.
What should I say to her?
Should I mention the dinner my father requested? But she had just started to feel better, and I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable again. Maybe it was best to say it and see how she would react.
Letting out a deep sigh, I placed my hands over hers. “Ken has told my father about us,” The words slipped out of my mouth, but I knew that I just had to say it. “And my father insists we come over for dinner tomorrow.”
“If you are uncomfortable with the idea, I will definitely find a way to convince my father otherwise.” I chimed in immediately because I never wanted to get her stressed out or forced to do things she wouldn’t want to do.
Although rejecting my dad’s request would create a whole new drama, I have no choice but to go along with it if Mira feels uncomfortable with the idea.
What I wasn’t expecting her to do, was to suddenly burst into her cute but loud laughter.
“What’s so funny, Mira?” I asked, a confused look crossing my face.
“You,” She replied, still chuckling. “You’re both funny and cute.”
“Cute?” I echoed.
“It’s cute how much you care.” She started. “But you need to understand that I am grown enough, so I can definitely handle myself.” She continued. “My father-in-law wants to see me, so I’ll definitely go.”
My world stopped when I heard her say “father-in-law.” I loved how effortlessly she acknowledged me as her husband.
Even though the word “husband” wasn’t exactly used, the implication was clear, nonetheless.
The past five years have been hard, as I’ve had to suppress my feelings and desires for fear of pushing her away.
So it’s the little things that matter to me-the care she shows and the way she looks at me.
God!
Those sexy eyes of hers tempt me to devour her every time she looks my way.
Waking up from my daydream. “As long as you’re okay with it, then I’m good,” I said, taking a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves.
It would be reckless to get hard during such a serious time, especially since she’s extremely busy right now.
I scolded myself.
“Great! So how about we ditch the kids for a night and go out for dinner tonight?” She suggested, wrapping her arms around my neck.
Really!
Mirabelle wants to go on a date with me.
I doubt it… She’s clearly saying that just to make me feel better. Or maybe it’s a prank to get back at me for leaving her alone with the kids last night.
“Do you mean it?” I asked, a smile spreading across my face.
It wasn’t just because of the question-well, partly. But thinking about last night brought a smile to my face, and I suppressed it because I wasn’t ready to get scolded by her.
“What do you think?” She asked, chuckling cutely.
And I replied. “I think you’re just trying to make me smile, but you don’t really mean it. I mean, you have so much work to do.”
“Do I always say that?” She asked, raising an eyebrow and I nodded.
“Well then, Noah Sylvester, will you go on a date with me?” She tilted her head to the side, trying to look cute.
And damn! She really looked so cute.
“Mirabelle Estella Davies, I will not go on a date with you,” I replied, shocking her.
“Why?” she pouted, looking completely confused.
I let out a loud chuckle and replied, “Because I’ll be taking you to the mall as soon as I get back. We need to find a gift for my dad and stepmom, and I also want to get you a sexy dress for the occasion.”
“I already have several dresses.” She pouted, turning away. “But then, the gifts are definitely a must.” She added.
I lifted her chin, making her look me directly in the eyes. “Mirabelle,” I began, and suddenly the tension in the air rose up.
“Noah?” She echoed.
Smiling widely, I said. “Let’s go out on a date when you’re actually free. I don’t want to inconvenience you.”
The words were difficult to say because I desperately wanted to go on a date with her.
But her comfort and peace of mind meant so much to me, I wanted her to know that she would always come first, before everything else.
After placing a quick kiss on her lips, I rushed out of the room. Once outside, I headed to the parking lot and wasn’t surprised to see my driver already seated in the car-he always arrives early.
As soon as he spotted me, he got out and greeted me, “Good morning, sir,” while opening the back door.
I nodded in acknowledgment and settled into the car as the quiet drive to the office began. From there, he would take me to the restaurant where I was scheduled to have lunch with the investors.
Suddenly, my phone rang loudly, breaking the silence. Sighing deeply, I pulled it from my trench coat and glanced at the Caller ID to see who was calling.
“Ken!” I called out, as soon as I recognized the number.
