Almost at the same time, Conrad’s men entered as well. It looked like a fight was about to break out, but Conrad didn’t even flinch.
“What are you all doing?! Put the guns down right now! Do you think this is just any place?!” Old Mrs. Brown slammed her cane down.
Kenneth’s face darkened. “Unworthy son.”
In the next second, Conrad fired a shot that pierced through the tiger head taxidermy behind Kenneth.
The taxidermy fell heavily to the ground, landing right at Kenneth’s feet.
“Aren’t you going to shoot? Why aren’t you?” Conrad taunted, spreading his arms. “Come on.”
Kenneth, though still the head of the Brown family, had become nearly invisible. Most of the elders and shareholders followed Conrad’s lead, and Kenneth’s remaining influence was hanging by a thread.
But Kenneth wasn’t stupid, and the people following Conrad knew his violent temper. They were always afraid of getting on his bad side. So there had to be someone to keep Conrad in check, and that was the only reason Kenneth still held his position.
As long as he was the head of the Brown family, Conrad would have to submit in public!
But at that moment, Kenneth realized he had no one by his side brave enough to stand up to Conrad.
He was getting old, and aside from the blood ties, he had nothing left to control this son!
“Put the guns down, now.” Old Mrs. Brown stepped in, preventing any more internal conflict.
“Did I not say I didn’t want him in this house?” Conrad directly questioned him.
“Why shouldn’t he come? He’s your older brother! Didn’t you already break one of his legs?”
“If he dares to come back, it just means he’s not scared enough.”
Conrad was about to explode again, but Old Mrs. Brown immediately spoke up, “Osmond, you should go.”
The man following Kenneth turned pale, limping away reluctantly with Kenneth’s bodyguard.
As they passed, Conrad grabbed his shoulder.
Though the two were about the same height, Conrad’s aura was overwhelming, and it immediately pressed the man down.
“Be careful. One little accident, and your life might not be worth saving.”
“Conrad!” Kenneth shouted in anger.
Conrad sneered, pulling a mocking grin. “You think you can escape?”
The man clenched his fists, not even looking at Conrad, his lips pressed together in frustration as he walked away.
A murderous glint flashed in Conrad’s eyes, and Kenneth feared Conrad might cause trouble at that moment.
Fortunately, Old Mrs. Brown was there, and Conrad seemed to care enough to hold back.
That’s why today, he had hoped to take advantage of Conrad’s absence and let Osmond return for a meal.
“Let’s eat,” Old Mrs. Brown said.
“I’m not hungry, I don’t feel like eating,” Kenneth replied, turning to head upstairs.
“I said, we’re eating.” Old Mrs. Brown had also come from a world of intrigue and danger. Although she usually appeared gentle and smiling, once she was truly angered, even Conrad had to yield to her.
The family elders respected her immensely.
The dinner was naturally tense.
Only Old Mrs. Brown spoke during the meal, while Booth kept a low profile, afraid of offending Conrad.
Thankfully, after the meal, David’s family quickly gathered Booth and left.
Old Mrs. Brown had Conrad take some supplements with him. “I don’t want to take these now, so take them back and give them to that Lillian.”
“Alright, thank you, Grandma, for caring about her.” Conrad gladly accepted them.
Seeing that he still seemed upset, Old Mrs. Brown peeled an apple for him. “You really should rein in that temper of yours. You’re acting like a hot-headed young man.”
“You’ve known me long enough to know what I’m like. He kept coming after me, and there was no way I was going to just swallow that.”
“Your father definitely made some mistakes, but when things get out of hand, it’s the Brown family that suffers. You’re not the same Conrad you used to be, the reckless second young master of the Brown family. You’re now the invisible helmsman of the Brown family. Some of your actions, like it or not, set an example for others. You need to be mindful of the impact.”
“I know.”
“If you have the chance, let Lillian come by the house sometime. I feel sorry for that girl.”
Recently, many people had been asking about the relationship between Lillian and Conrad. Old Mrs. Brown, of course, knew exactly who had sent them to gather information.
They had carefully considered their options before choosing the White family as their alliance through marriage. As for who Conrad would ultimately marry in the future, that would be up to him.
“As for Osmond, when we brought you back, we promised your maternal grandfather that Osmond wouldn’t be included in the Brown family’s genealogy. We even said he was dead, and he doesn’t have the right to carry the Brown name. You don’t need to go to extremes. The constant struggle between you and your father is already enough.”
Conrad didn’t like hearing that. “Alright, I’ll head back now.”
Old Mrs. Brown knew how stubborn Conrad was.
“I’m old now, so I can’t scold you like I used to. Go ahead, but remember what I said. As long as I’m alive, what’s yours, no one can take it. Do some good deeds for yourself and your future children.”
“Grandma, I’ve seen so many ghosts, I’m too far gone to be saved.”
Good deeds? That was laughable.
If he hadn’t taken that bastard’s life today, just for Old Mrs. Brown’s sake, he’d consider himself kind.
As soon as he got into the car, Conrad ordered, “Follow that guy. Look for an opportunity to take him out.”
“Won’t that alarm the family elders?”
“Let it alarm them. Anyone who doesn’t like it will have their mouths shut soon enough.”
He wouldn’t bother if the guy didn’t come back.
But if he did, then Conrad wouldn’t hold back.
Once Conrad left, Old Mrs. Brown called Kenneth downstairs.
“What are you trying to do? Didn’t I tell you that once Osmond is gone, he won’t be coming back for the rest of his life? You’ve been sneaking around with Osmond for years, and I’ve ignored it. But now you bring him back on purpose?”
“I didn’t know that bastard would be called back here. Am I supposed to inform him every time I want to see my own son? Is he supposed to be my father?” Kenneth felt like this family had gone crazy.
Old Mrs. Brown said, “Since he’s taken his mother’s surname and we’ve given him money, we’ve fulfilled our responsibility. Don’t think about anything else. Osmond is definitely not the future heir to the Brown family!”
In front of Conrad, Osmond didn’t even have the guts to challenge him.
“If you really care about Osmond, then the Brown family is as good as gone. Don’t forget what kind of person the Brown family needs. As for your relationship with Conrad, I won’t interfere. But this matter-don’t even think about it!”
Kenneth, unwilling to accept it, snapped, “Osmond is still my son. Why doesn’t he have the right to inherit?”
“Because he’s useless. He doesn’t even look like a member of the Brown family!” Old Mrs. Brown said, then turned away without a second glance. “I’ve said my piece. If you want the events of 20 years ago to repeat themselves, go ahead and try.”
Old Mrs. Brown added, “Back then, how old was Conrad? He dared to fight off a pack of hounds, and he won. What were you doing at the time? Sitting upstairs, just watching while holding Osmond. Isn’t it perfectly normal for Conrad to hate you? If you truly want Osmond to stay alive, then don’t let him come back!”
“Mom, Osmond is your own grandson! How could you bear it?”
“I have no grandchildren in my eyes. I only have the future heir to the Brown family. Conrad is the only one worthy of being my grandson!”
