The nurse didn’t expect Lillian to make such a move. Within moments, her vision blurred, and she passed out.
Lillian quickly swapped their clothes. Fortunately, the guards hadn’t bothered her much lately, aside from delivering food, so there was little risk of discovery. She put on the nurse’s uniform, wrapped her hair under the nurse’s cap, and smashed whatever she could in the room to make it look chaotic.
She opened the door, pushed a cart, and hurried out, lowering her voice and feigning panic. “Miss Lillian, I’m leaving now. Please don’t get agitated.”
The two guards exchanged impatient glances. It was rare to see such a troublesome woman. They were already treating her well, despite her poisoning Mr. Conrad, yet she still caused so much trouble.
Lillian kept her head down as she walked forward and stepped into the elevator to the second floor. She stayed silent, head bowed, until she reached the first floor, where she encountered a group of people heading upstairs.
Lillian kept her head down as she walked forward and entered the elevator to the second floor. She stayed silent the entire way. When she reached the first floor and stepped out, she immediately encountered a group of people heading upstairs.
She quickly ducked behind a pillar, waiting until the sounds of their footsteps faded away before pushing the cart out again. Suddenly, someone grabbed her arm, causing her to freeze and look up nervously.
Gordon stared at her with a probing gaze before his eyes widened. Lillian gave him a silent plea to stay quiet.
“Mr. Gordon, what’s wrong?” someone asked.
Gordon snapped out of it. “Nothing, I just remembered I left something on the boat.”
“Do you need us to get it?”
“No need,” Gordon replied with a lazy smile, leaning on the cart. “I just want to have a chat with this young lady. You all go ahead upstairs.”
Gordon was notorious for his numerous short-lived relationships, so the others didn’t think much of it.
Hogan remarked, “You really have no sense of occasion. Hurry up and join us later.”
“Got it,” Gordon said. Once they went upstairs, he immediately turned to Lillian with a teasing tone, “What’s your name?” He pushed the cart and led her toward the door, his voice playful.
At the entrance, a few guards turned to look. Gordon raised his head, and they quickly averted their gazes, hearing only his teasing voice.
“Your skin is so fair. I’m Gordon. Do you want to be my friend?”
“Why are you so shy?”
“Come on, give me a chance.”
Gordon’s words were oily and slick, like a second-rate playboy, as he led Lillian to the side. In a low voice, he asked, “What are you doing here? I’ve been trying to contact you!”
Lillian clutched his arm, “Gordon, help me. My grandma is still in the town. I haven’t shown up for days, and she must be worried sick. Let me borrow your phone! At least let me assure her I’m safe.”
Gordon frowned. “There’s no signal to contact the mainland on this island. You have to leave the communication zone to get a signal, which means going back to the country.”
Lillian was shocked to find Andrew’s words were true; she had thought it was just an excuse.
“Then, how far are we from returning? How can I get back and contact the outside world?”
“We’re not allowed to bring communication devices when visiting Conrad, and none of our people can follow us. It’s always been like this. This island isn’t as simple as you think.”
“What should I do?! I need to see my grandma!” Lillian exclaimed, ready to dash toward the shore.
Gordon quickly pulled her back. The commotion made the sentries peek out.
Gordon immediately leaned down, pressing Lillian against the wall in a way that looked like they were kissing.
He whispered, “Our yacht is docked at the pier. I’ll get you to the cruise ship and then send you off in a helicopter.”
Lillian nodded eagerly, “Okay, okay!”
Gordon asked, “Did you have anything to do with Conrad’s poisoning?”
Lillian’s face froze. “Yes.”
“Got it.” No wonder Conrad had disappeared during such an important meeting. The Brown Family Group was now embroiled in a power struggle, with some shareholders already showing signs of shifting allegiances after hearing about Conrad’s condition.
This explained why they were rushing over.
Gordon said, “Follow me.”
He wrapped his arm around her, lowering his head as if kissing her, appearing eager to get her on the boat for some private time. The sentries exchanged knowing glances, understanding the situation in a way only men could.
Lillian followed Gordon onto the boat, which was mostly empty at the moment.
Gordon quickly said, “I’ll make arrangements now, but after I drop you off, you’ll have to make the rest of the journey on your own. I need to return.”
Being able to leave was good enough for Lillian; she didn’t want to think too much about it.
Under the cover of night, the yacht slowly left the dock.
Lillian watched as the island gradually faded into the distance, her anxious heart finally settling. She slumped down, her entire body tense and exhausted.
Gordon steered the yacht while pressing the button to call for the helicopter. It was the only way to leave the island.
Conrad suddenly opened his eyes, struggling to breathe, tasting the metallic tang of blood in his mouth. The room was filled with medical equipment, and his consciousness drifted, his vision doubling momentarily.
Hogan and Lionel approached, and George softly asked, “Can you see clearly?”
Conrad closed his eyes briefly. “Yes.”
“Then you should be fine. Once this batch of blood is transfused, you should be out of danger.”
“How long was I unconscious?” Conrad’s voice was extremely hoarse.
“Four days, sustained only by nutrient fluids,” George replied.
Conrad frowned, “How’s the Brown Family Group?”
“You missed an important shareholders’ meeting. The people following you are still at odds with your father. If you don’t show up soon, things might really spiral out of control.”
The outside world didn’t dare to spread rumors about the Brown family’s internal affairs, but those close to Conrad were well aware. His relationship with Kenneth could barely be called father-son; it was more like enemies. Kenneth couldn’t wait to remove Conrad and replace him with his favored son as the heir to the Brown Family Group.
Conrad’s sudden disappearance at such a critical juncture made his close friends wonder if he had gone with Lillian, but she too had vanished. If Conrad had taken her on a trip, it could be understandable, but the timing was too delicate. If George hadn’t arranged for their rescue today, they wouldn’t have known that Conrad had narrowly escaped death once again.
“You don’t know yet. Rumors in City N say you’ve been killed, shot to death, and the charges are quite disgraceful.”
Conrad chuckled darkly, “That old man has always wished for my death.” He took a deep breath and said, “I feel tightness in my chest.”
“Anything else bothering you?” George frowned, checking the data. Everything should have been stable by now.
“Where’s Lillian?” Conrad suddenly asked.
