“Which case?” I asked, and my heart was thumping loudly in my chest.
I assumed that he was talking about the same case, the custody of my son. In the last few meetings, the way Ansell reacted, I thought that he just wanted to warn me that he could do such a thing if I didn’t listen to him but it seems like he was serious about it.
“It is a case of drugs”
I released a deep breath of relief upon hearing that he wasn’t talking about that. Ansell just said that to scare me.
“I fought a few of his father’s cases, and now Ansell is here. His father’s case helped me grow my career quickly. Now I want you fight from his side”he said.
“But it is illegal ” I protested.
He chuckled.
“The man in himself is illegal ” he stated.
“We shouldn’t be taking his case when we know that it is wrong ” I argued.
“Nara, if you want to grow in your career, you need not think about what’s right and wrong. I know it’s unethical, but as long as it’s not causing harm to someone else or punishing an innocent person, it’s acceptable to take up the case. Your job is to provide the evidence ” Marvin tried to persuade me.
“I am sorry, Marvin, but I can’t ” I firmly replied. “This is something against my principles. I would not like to take the help of ilegal things to climb up the stairs of success ”
The first reason is that I will never take the wrong path to climb up the stairs to success and second, I don’t want to get involved in anything related to Ansell.
“It’s ok. I understand. Everyone has their own choices. I was just proposing it to you” he said.
I could see the disappointment in his eyes.
“Thank you for thinking about me” I said.
“And remember, I am still waiting for your response ” he added, his gaze locking with mine. “I hope you haven’t forgotten about my offer”
I nodded.
I know need to answer him early because he also has his life. I can’t let him hang in the middle because of me.
“Shall we?” I asked, who was still busy assorting the files.
He pouted, his eyes clearly saying that he didn’t want the leave, not just yet.
“Ok” he said, standing up with a heavy heart.
Now he wants to stay back at the office and when he grows up, the time will come when he will not like to go there.
“Bye, Mr. Marvel. Jayden enjoyed it so much today” he said, giving him a flying kiss.
Ialso enjoyed your company, Buddy” Marvin said, giving him a flying kiss. “See you soon”
With a soft giggle, we made our way out of the office. I knew Marvin was staring at us as we walked out but I didn’t turn around.
“Want to go on a long drive?” I asked Jayden as we settled inside.
“Yayyy, yesss!” He squealed with unbridled excitement, his enthusiasm infectious.
I chuckled and shifted gears, taking both of us on a long drive. As we cruised along, I played his favourite cartoon music, and he chirped along dancing in his seat.
“Jayden’s mommy is the world’s best mommy!” He proclaimed, his laughter filling the car with warmth.
He was looking in a good mood and it seemed like the best time to talk to him. Taking his permission to add a new person to life is equally to add a new person to life is equally important.
“Jayden, mommy wants to ask something ” I said.
“Yes, mommy” his attention was now on me.
“How much do you like Mr. Marvel?” I chose my words carefully.
“Mr. Marcel ” he rubbed his chin as if thinking about it, his eyes sparkling with thoughts, “he is a good man”
He stated it as if it were a matter of fact.
“Yeah, he is” I can’t agree more than on this” but how much do you like him?” I asked.
My attention was on the driving . I was looking at Jayden in between.
“I like him very much” he replied, “Why are you asking mommy?” He asked me back.
“You wanted a father, right?” I asked him.
After giving it some thought, he nodded his head with a smal pout on his lips.
“How about Mr. Marvel?’
My heart pounded as I asked this question. I really want to know his view before taking any decision because it is going to affect his life as well. And if I married someone, then it would be solely for him.
I applied the brake, as while talking, I didn’t come to know we had come to a deserted place. I should be taking a U-turn from here but before that, I decided to talk to Jayden on this topic.
“Mr. Marvel?”
I nodded.
“As a father?”
I nodded again.
“But he is Jayden’s good friend” he reasoned, looking straight, his body continuously moving, just the way it always does.
“Indeed, he is. But will you accept him as your father?” I asked him, clarifying more.
He pouted and crossed his arms over his chest. A silence followed my question.
“Jayden doesn’t know ” he said, shaking his head, confusion written on his face. “Jayden wanted his father. Marvin is a good friend ”
His father?
I can’t give him his real father.
On one hand, he thinks Marvin is a good man, he is happy with him and plays with him but at the same time, he also wants his father.
He has made me even more confused than before.
“Mommy, go” he squealed.
Sighing, I started the engine but the car didn’t start.
What?
Don’t tell me it is going to ditch me at this point.
I tried to start it once again but the result was the same. Jayden and I shared a look because it was not the first time that it had happened, the only thing that was new here was that we were in a deserted place with no mechanic shop around.
God!
I took it for the service last month. How could it just ditch me like that?
I tried multiple times but every time the result was the same.
“Mommy, how will we go?” Jayden asked me, and his excitement died.
“Let me check”
Stepping out, I looked around and found myself alone in the middle of the road. Opening the hood of the car, I tried to check it, but my limited knowledge of car engines left me baffled, and I couldn’t make heads or tails of the situation. It seemed like leaving it untouched might be a better option than making matters worse by attempting to fix it myself.
I really need to change the car now. When we shifted , I took my old car with me and since then I haven’t replaced it.
But at the moment, the point is how we are supposed to go back home.
Shall I call Marvin?
No, I have already taken up half of his day. I wouldn’t be nice from my side.
William is also out of the city. He has gone on a small trip with Mia.
God!
“Mom, Jayden wants to come out” Jayden piped up, peering out of the car window. I brought him out and now we were both standing in the middle of the road. With one hand holding Jayden’s wrist, I went though my contacts to see if I could call anyone for help when we heard a honk, which made me look up.
It was like a ray of hope when I saw the car where there was not even a single fly around. A wave of relief passed through me when she peeped out of the window of the car.
“Hello, miss, do you need any help?”
The smile that the boy passed was so creepy that it was better to stand alone on the road than to take help from him.
Before I could ask him to mind his own business, my little protector spoke from my side.
“No thanks” Jayden said, sounding really rude.
He is quick to understand the voices of the people. Those whom he finds creepy and with negative vibes, he calls them boogeymen. He doesn’t let me talk to them. He usually starts crying if I talk to a person he doesn’t like.
“My husband has gone to bring help. Thanks”
Giving me a look, he drove away. I lied because I didn’t want to mess with him unnecessarily. He wasn’t giving good vibes. I have Jayden with me and I don’t want my sharp tongue to put my baby in any anger.
“Mommy, what is the husband?” Jayden asked.
How could I expect to say one new word in front of Jayden without him asking about it?
“Jayden, this isn’t the right time to ask questions” I told him, hoping to postpone this conversation until later.
Jayden pressed his lips together, his curiosity evident, but he reluctantly looked away. I returned to scrolling through my contacts, hoping to find someone who could assist us when Jayden suddenly started shouting and jumped at his place as if he had got his favourite candy.
“Mr. Hero, Mr. Hero!”
My head immediately snapped up and I found Ansell coming out of his car.
What is he doing here?
