CHAPTER NINETY-TWO
BURKE’S POV
It has been three weeks since Catherine’s death. I have been having a hard time with the board members because they were forcing me to take a wife and save the kingdom.
I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling, regretting being the Alpha of the pack for the first time since my coronation.
Soon, my door banged open, and I knew Diago was the one who banged my door open; he had lost all respect for me because I had rebuked taking a new wife.
“Do you know your pack is in Chaos? You are here as the Alpha sulking over a dead woman,” Diago said rudely, standing in front of my bed.
“Guards,” I yelled, ignoring Diago’s rude comments.
Soon, the guards, securing my room, entered inside and bowed to me, and as a sign of respect, they did not speak except when they were being spoken to.
“I said I don’t want to be disturbed and you allowed a Vagabond into my room,” I groaned at the guards, leaving Diago speechless.
“Alpha… Alpha… ”
“Silence,” I instructed, before one of the guards could give an excuse.
They kept quiet immediately, with their heads bowed to the ground.
“Get out, and no visitors are allowed again. I’ll let this slide, but if it repeats itself, I promise to take action,” I threatened the guards before sending them out of my room.
“Did you call your right-hand man a Vagabond?” Diago asked, and I chose to believe it was a rhetorical question, so I didn’t give him a reply.
“Next time you address me and use a rude tone, I’ll ensure you get thrown out, and your title will be stripped away from you,” I threatened Diago, and he swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry Alpha Burke; there is something you need to see,” Diago said politely. Not wanting to get me angry again.
“What is it, Diago? There’s no board meeting today, and I think I need some rest; I have been thinking about a lot of things,” I groaned at him, feeling frustrated.
“It’s not about you, Alpha Burke; you need to see this,” He said, sounding very serious.
“It’s better be worth my time Diago,” I said, rubbing my eyes.
I got off the bed and wore a black shirt and a black short before following Daigo out of my room.
We got outside of my mansion and my eyes widened when I saw my people shouting and protesting at the gate of my mansion. They weren’t allowed inside because they would cause a lot of havoc.
“What is happening here, Diago?” I questioned, still in shock.
This has never happened since I was born; my grandfather ruled, my father ruled, and the pack members had never protested in their tenure.
“The pack members were angry that there is a way to stop this syndrome, which is fast spreading, but the Alpha did not take action, allowing all their loved ones to take their wolf form for days,” Diago explained, and I felt angry with myself for allowing my people to suffer.
Being in wolf form makes someone aggressive, making them quarantine till there’s a solution.
“Do they know I just lost Catherine? There has to be another way to stop this syndrome,” I said, frustrated.
The crowd protest grew higher when they noticed my presence.
“If you are the Alpha, you will protect your people,” The crowd yelled, pointing in my direction.
“They have noticed your presence, Alpha Burke; it is time to go inside before they become aggressive and start throwing weapons,” Diago said, and I nodded my head.
I entered the mansion still in deep thought; there has to be a way to get rid of this Syndrome; Catherine would be angry at me if I got married when her body was not yet cold in the grave.
“Burke, there is a problem,” I heard Ava’s voice from behind me as I walked to my room.
“The Alpha is in deep thoughts, Miss Ava. Can you leave him to it?” Diago said rudely, making me surprised, he had never spoken to Ava in such a manner before.
“I need to speak to my brother, alone,” Ava retorted. I could feel the cold energy they gave each other and I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t bother about that because that wasn’t my problem.
“Diago, my sister, and I need some time alone,” I told Diago, and he respectfully left Ava and me alone; I could see the victory in Ava’s eyes.
“What is it?” I asked, resting my back on the wall.
“It’s Nikky Burke, she leaves the mansion every day and comes back at night, I don’t know what she is going to do,” Ava said, but I didn’t take that as an important issue to talk about, be sure Nikky is a kid, probably she goes around the pack to play with her friends and get equipped with the environment.
“Is that all?” I asked, and Ava gave me a frown.
“This is more serious than you think. Nikky is a child, and she should be banned from leaving the mansion,” Ava said angrily, Rolling her eyes at me.
“She is my child, Ava; she isn’t a prisoner. She might be a child, but she has the freedom to go wherever she pleases,” I said, getting exhausted from the discussion.
“Is that what you think? Anytime I tell her that her mother is dead, she starts a fight with me, saying her mother is alive,” Ava said, and I just ignored her.
Nikky is trying to heal, so saying her mother is still alive is just a phase of denial that she needs to pass through to heal.
“One last thing before you get exhausted of me,” She said, harshly, folding her hands between her breasts.
“What is it, Ava? I am exhausted and I won’t want to waste time in discussing Nikky’s healing process,” I stated, losing my patience.
“It is not about Nikky; Emma has gotten the syndrome,” She dropped the news, and my eyes widened in surprise.
