Ms. Giles stood proudly and said, “These are my rules.”
Sophia’s face changed slightly as she pulled at Ms. Giles. “Ms. Giles…”
“Shut up!”
Ms. Giles impatiently scolded Sophia to keep quiet and then glared at Darnell. “If you want to enjoy the air conditioning, go elsewhere and don’t waste my time.”
Darnell smiled but didn’t look at Ms. Giles. Instead, he looked at Sophia with interest. “From now on, I want you to serve us.”
He pointed at Ms. Giles. “You, get lost! The farther, the better! If you keep whining, I’ll complain to your manager.”
Seeing Darnell’s attitude, Ms. Giles, who had never been treated this way, was furious. She snapped, “Who do you think you are? Two poor people pretend to be rich. If you can afford this car, I’ll eat the tires.”
“Sophia, I remind you again, these two are just poor folks looking for air conditioning. Don’t waste your time on them.”
“And don’t even think about letting them test drive. If anything happens, you can’t afford the responsibility.”
After saying that, she turned back to the lounge area, grabbed a bottle of water, and sipped it while swinging her high heels disdainfully at Darnell and Garrett.
“Country bumpkins!”
She wanted to call security to throw Darnell and Garrett out but knew they hadn’t done anything wrong. Kicking them out would leave room for complaints.
So she resorted to mocking them.
Several saleswomen who had just closed deals gathered around Ms. Giles, sneering at Sophia and Darnell.
Darnell ignored them and focused on Sophia. “Miss, would you be willing to serve us poor folks?”
Sophia glanced at Ms. Giles and then at Darnell and the honest-looking Garrett. She bit her lip. “Alright.”
She figured she would be fired in a week anyway. Whether or not she made a sale, leaving a good impression on customers was necessary.
Most importantly, she wanted to uphold Darnell and Garrett’s dignity. Even if they couldn’t afford a car, they shouldn’t be mocked.
“Please wait a moment.”
Sophia turned to pour water for Darnell and Garrett before earnestly explaining the features of the car in front of them. Her demeanor was serious and respectful.
Though her explanation wasn’t perfect, her sincere attitude made Darnell nod repeatedly. Garrett listened intently, afraid of missing anything.
Darnell knew all about cars but gave Garrett and Sophia a chance by listening patiently while making a decision.
“Still a graduate from the University of Whiteville but as dumb as a pig. I told her they were poor folks wasting her time, but she wouldn’t believe it.”
In the distance, Ms. Giles flipped through some papers. Having sold three cars today with sales totaling over a million dollars made her today’s top seller, so she felt superior enough to lecture Sophia.
Watching Sophia seriously introduce the car to Darnell and Garrett made her sneer.
“Yeah, Sophia isn’t smart. She missed an easy sale just because she warned Mr. Coghill instead of letting him touch her.”
“Those two clearly look like country bumpkins. How could they afford an $850, 000 car?”
“Exactly! Even an idiot can see they can’t buy it. Is Sophia trying to make a good impression on the manager?”
“Too bad the manager only cares about results, not efforts.”
The tall and haughty saleswomen mocked Sophia loudly enough for both Darnell and Sophia to hear clearly.
Sophia remained composed and continued her polite introduction to Darnell and Garrett while occasionally refilling their water glasses.
After about fifteen minutes, Sophia finished her presentation and bowed slightly to Darnell and Garrett.
“Thank you both for being the first ones to listen to my entire presentation. Whether you buy it or not, I’m very grateful.”
Darnell laughed heartily. “We should be thanking you.”
Garrett also expressed his gratitude with a shy smile. “Yes, thank you so much for being so kind when no one else was.”
He looked at Sophia several times before lowering his head bashfully.
Sophia smiled back warmly. “You’re welcome. It’s my duty.”
Darnell turned to Garrett. “Garrett, what do you think of this car?”
Garrett took a deep breath and looked at Sophia with admiration before whispering to Darnell.
“Boss, this car is too expensive for me, but this young lady has been so kind… I’ll borrow money from the company and have it deducted from my salary later to buy this car.”
Ms. Giles and the other saleswomen snorted in disdain upon hearing this. Borrowing money from the company? Salary deductions? Clearly poor folks!
“One car isn’t enough.”
Darnell patted Garrett’s shoulder and smiled broadly at Sophia. “We’ll take eleven.”
Sophia was stunned while Ms. Giles’s mocking smile froze.
Eleven BMW X5s at $850, 000 each plus additional fees would total around ten million dollars.
A young man in red clothes with shorts and cloth shoes alongside a timid countryman claiming they’d buy eleven BMW X5s left everyone in disbelief.
They didn’t look like people who could spend such an amount.
Sophia was dazed too. “You want eleven of these cars?”
“That’s right. Eleven!”
Darnell waved grandly. “With your attitude alone, I won’t even test drive them. Tell your manager we’ll pay by check.”
Sophia nodded instinctively before snapping back into reality. “Are you really buying eleven BMW X5s?”
Darnell nodded again firmly. “Yes, eleven.”
“Sophia! Don’t believe their nonsense!”
Ms. Giles recovered from her initial shock and approached with several saleswomen, smirking playfully.
“They can’t even afford one car, let alone eleven. They’re just teasing you.”
“Do you really think they’ll pull out ten million dollars?”
The saleswomen laughed together dismissively, not believing Sophia could close such a deal worth ten million dollars.
Darnell laughed heartily, reaching into his pocket to pull out a thick stack of coins. He tossed them onto the hood of the car, prompting Ms. Giles and the others to burst into laughter.
“With nothing but these dimes and quarters, you really think you’ve got some serious cash?” one of them teased.
“You can’t even buy a screw with that, yet you dream of buying eleven BMWs? How naive!”
The guests around them erupted in laughter, while Sophia felt her cheeks flush slightly. Yet, instead of getting upset, she bent down to help Darnell pick up the scattered coins.
Ignoring the jests, Darnell reached into another pocket and pulled out a stack of checks.
Smack! One million!
Smack! Another million!
Smack! Yet another million!
The checks that Roberto had never had a chance to cash in suddenly found their moment to shine as Darnell slapped them one by one onto the table.
The long string of zeros on the checks caught the attention of many present.
Ten checks, a total of ten million.
Darnell waved his hand dismissively, casting a casual smile at Ms. Giles and the others. “Is this enough?”
