Chapter 135 – Hidden in plain sight

Book:The Rejected Ex-Wife Published:2025-2-8

June headed to the hospital with Lucy in search of Sheila.
According to the nurses, she was undergoing surgery and couldn’t be seen until further instruction. June felt a cold sweat run down her spine. It seemed like any time she was close to a breakthrough, something terrible happened.
Not to mention that the supposed evidence she had to prove her sister’s innocence and put April behind bars was still stored somewhere she didn’t know. Everything was falling apart. Lucy and June spent the day in the hospital waiting for good news on the surgery.
When the theatre doors opened, June leapt to her feet and attacked the doctors with questions. “How is she? Where is she? How did it go?”
“Are you related to the patient?” The doctor asked and she nodded. “Please see me in my office.”
June followed him immediately with Lucy behind her. They sat in the office and she asked once again. “How is she? Please don’t keep us in suspense,”
“The young lady was in bad condition.” The doctor started. “We were able to save her life but I’m afraid we might have wasted our time,”
“What do you mean?” Lucy prompted, unable to wrap her head around the doctor’s words.
“Have you heard of the concept of being brain dead?”
June felt her air supply cut off. “B-Brain dead?”
“The young lady is a fighter. I give that to her. However, during the procedure, we found some drugs in her system which changed the dynamics of things. Blood supply was cut off from her brain and as a result, she might never wake up.”
Lucy heaved a deep breath. “Are you saying she will be in a comatose state?”
The doctor nodded. “The young lady took a terrible hit to the head which impacted the brain. We also suspect she tried to kill herself before the accident. She has been placed in the intensive care unit. Her body is alive but her brain needs to heal.”
“You must understand it takes a lot of money to keep her in that state. Once the air supply is cut off-”
“She is as good as dead.” Lucy finished. “Is this the part where you want to verify if we can afford to keep her in or pull the plug?” She gritted, shaking with anger. “Excuse me.”
June watched Lucy leave the place with confusion written on her face. Unknown to her, Lucy had similarly lost her mother. Hearing the words brought back feelings she tried to forget.
June remained in the office and rounded up things with the doctor. Sheila was placed on life support and it felt like they were back to square one. While June drove out of the hospital, she wondered her next line of action.
The only living relative of Sheila was her twin sister who was now in prison. A young lady who was made to spend her life for a crime she knew nothing about due to April’s wickedness.
Meanwhile, Clarence was picked up by the police in her grandfather’s house. A witness to her crime stepped up with the video and when her grandfather invited the police, standing as a witness to the crime, it seemed like the end of the road for her.
That night, June returned home and sat in the living room with Lucy and her mother. Lucy apologised for her earlier actions and moved the motion to keep Sheila on life support at least until her killer is found.
Just then, June received a call from a North City number. She turned to the window and found the men standing as usual. She excused herself to pick up the call. “Hello?”
“You lost her,” Liam said calmly, it was the calm before the storm. “I warned you not to trust her.”
“I’m sorry,” June bit her lips. “She had an accident. She might never wake up.”
A brief silence. “Did you get the evidence she spoke about?”
“Not yet.” She gritted. “She spoke of it being locked in a storage somewhere,”
“What is your plan? To comb the entire storage facility in South City?”
“I don’t know yet.” she said, “I will get back to you on-”
“No need,” Liam cut her off. “I will be coming to South City soon. Stay in touch.”
June heard two beeps that signalled the end of the call. She dropped her phone and returned to the living room. The atmosphere was tense as they watched the evening news that reported the day’s events.
After the news report, June retired early, she made a pit stop at Sheila’s room with a heavy burden in her heart. Two steps into the room, she noticed the little paper folded by the side of the bed – Hidden in plain sight.
June approached the bed with caution and picked up the folded paper. It was a letter handwritten and signed in Sheila’s name. She read the content and her heart broke all over again.
“Hello, June. I am sorry I have to do this, but can’t live with this guilt any more. I stored the flash drive at a store in the heart of South City. The details are written below. Please set my sister free and forget about me. I’ll be trusting you this once.”
From the tone of her letter and the doctor’s report, June was fairly certain that Sheila had attempted suicide. She fell in her room and cried herself to sleep. There and then, she vowed to set things straight.
She would set Sharon free no matter the cost. April would be brought to book even if she had to go to the depths of hell to do so. The next day, June was awakened by the news of Clarence’s arrest.
“She hit Sheila and zoomed off!” Lucy said furiously. “She put Sheila in that situation!”
June watched the trending video of how Clarence hit a young lady, reversed and ran away leaving the girl bleeding. It didn’t help that the South City Hospital gave a statement on Sheila’s health status, further enraging the public.
Clarence’s grandfather disowned her and she was made to face the music. Meanwhile, a private detective who was placed in charge of the murder of the young man at her estate was able to hack into the video footage of the house and found how April Lontoc was held hostage in the house.
The video of April killing the young man and fleeing was also recovered and just like that, the search for April intensified. On the other hand of things, Rafael was placed in a difficult situation.
Clarence had called him crying and begging for intervention. They were yet to ascertain the paternity of the child and didn’t have a good relationship due to the court war but he was willing to overlook all of that.
If Clarence was carrying his child, he had a responsibility to her and the unborn child. Rafael had been a dark cloud since he returned from North City and when he was informed of the situation, he called his lawyers.
“Do whatever you can to keep her safe until she gives birth,” He ordered, and the lawyers got to work. The effects were instant.
June was enraged when she heard Clarence would be released on bail. She arrived at the police station, armed with her lawyers to hinder the release, only to come face to face with Rafael and his lawyer.
