Carson rushed towards the place, fire in his steps. June was struggling on the bed, and the vent machine was beeping in warning.
The nurses gave way and he tried to rescue the situation but there was no hope. June was flatling and her struggles were reducing.
Life seeped out of her in their very eyes.
Carson refused to let her go. “Get the defibrillator!” He announced as a last option. “Charge!”
Carson placed the iron-shaped items on June’s chest to restore her to life. The electric zapped her body and the nurses watched her jolt from the impact.
“Again!” Carson repeated the process until the machine signalled life. Although the sign of life was faint, it was better than death.
Once he detected the life signal, he dropped the defibrillators and checked her vitals. Her pulse was weak, including her heartbeat, it seemed she was slipping into her comatose state.
Carson looked over her hand and discovered something confusing. There was a swell in her vein area. It seemed like someone had tried to inject her and left an injury on her arm.
His brows narrowed as he inspected it further. “Get me a syringe!” He ordered and one of the nurses quickly pushed a tray of medical items towards him.
Carson took some blood from her body, saving it for testing later. Unknown to them, one of the nurses who stood in the room was a traitor.
She bit her lips angrily once she realised the doctor might have caught on to her, not to mention the fact she was supposed to end her mission with the young lady dead today.
The doctor from South City had ruined her plans! It was only a matter of time before the young lady woke up and they found her trail.
She needed to leave as soon as possible!
Meanwhile, in South City, Lucy conversed with Evelyn. “It’s been a while since I spoke with the lady. I suddenly miss her so much.”
“She must be so busy. I hope she finds enough time to have some fun too.” Evelyn said with her heart in the right posture.
“Do you think she would be upset?” Lucy asked after a beat of silence.
“Upset? Why?” Evelyn feigned ignorance.
“We told him her whereabouts.” Lucy deadpanned. “He hurt her and we led him right to her. Have you seen the news lately?”
“Clarence claims to be bullied by the Ambrose family. She is suing him. Mr Ambrose. It’s not going to be pretty.”
Beatrice smiled at the youngling who had her daughter’s interest in heart. “I understand you are worried. But I don’t think things are as simple as that.”
“Rafael hurt my daughter. No matter how weighty his reasons might be, it doesn’t change the past or the fact he hurt my daughter.”
“It is his responsibility to earn that trust and mend what is broken.” She turned to Lucy. “He can’t do that if we don’t give him the chance. Can he?”
Lucy shook her head no.
“There you go. Besides, he’s got a whole country to search. I doubt he would easily find her.”
Meanwhile, Rafael was at his wits end. Carson wasn’t picking up his calls and he had no idea of the situation. Liam had refused to cooperate with him despite his attempts at a peaceful resolution.
He spent his time gathering information on Liam Fernando, who was not only the billionaire heir of the Fernando conglomerate but also the king of the North City underworld.
The operations in the Fernando estate were an open secret and a tale of the gossipers in the City. Everyone knew that behind the big conglomerate that was seen was a strong empire built on the sweat and blood of the Fernando ancestry.
Rafael’s North City manager was shocked when he made his intentions known.
“You want them to sneak into the Fernando estate?!” He yelled with his eyes wide. “That is akin to suicide! Didn’t I tell you? That man is not just a businessman, he is a dark Mafia Lord.”
“And?” Rafael asked with raised eyebrows.
“He is not someone we want to offend sir!” The manager said in fear, ignorant of Rafael’s wrath.
“I am not someone you want to offend.”
Only then did he realise the velocity of his words. The manager slapped his mouth shut and swallowed hard.
“I will surely get the men set for you!” the manager said and stepped out to make some calls.
Later that day, Carson had June’s blood tested and discovered some weird components. It seemed like someone had poisoned June’s blood with Atropa belladonna – one of the deadliest plant poisons that couldn’t be easily detected.
The traces of the poison were fresh in her blood and he figured they were newly injected. Whoever injected her with the poison did that with the intent to kill.
Everything suddenly made sense. The sudden attacks and near-death experiences. With his findings, Carson discovered something new.
Someone wanted to kill June. That person wasn’t Arnold or the server in detainment. That person walked around freely and had access to June’s hospital room.
The news was taken to Liam who didn’t take it lightly. On the other hand, having found the cause of the accident, he could proceed with treatment to test June’s response to it.
While Carson administered treatment to an unconscious June, the entire estate was flipped over as they searched for the perpetrator. A woman who entered June’s room a few minutes before her episode.
A woman who had suddenly disappeared.
“What do you mean she’s gone?!” Liam banged his fists on the table.
“The young miss must have heard we were searching for her. She is nowhere to be found.”
“Is there a record of her leaving the estate?”
“No sir.”
“Then she is somewhere. Make sure the gates are closed. No one goes in or out. I don’t want excuses.” Liam fired his orders. “Bring her down. Dead or alive.”
“Yes sir.”
That night was tough in the Fernando estate. Security was on high alert and Carson remained in June’s hospital room.
After the incident, he decided to personally attend to her health, watching her like a hawk and noting the progress in her health.
Meanwhile, Rafael was ready to take the Fernando estate. His manager had hired some group of men who were tasked with entering the estate and gaining entry.
When Rafael informed the group he would be joining them in the operations, his manager lost it.
“You can’t go in there! It’s too risky, sir! Please, let them do the job. We can wait outside while they figure out the situation.”
Rafael ignored his manager and walked into his room to change into more suitable clothing.
The Fernando estate was in chaos as they sought a woman who stood in front of the building, disguised as a man. She had killed one of the guards and left him to be discovered in the cold room a few days ago. A move that made her invincible.
However, with the ongoing search, it was only a matter of time before it was discovered. She felt tension and counted the seconds until she had to make a call.
She needed to leave as the plans had failed woefully. At nine PM, she was due for a shift and like everyone else, she left her position for the new occupants.
The disguised young lady walked towards the virgin land of the estate where she buried a burner phone by the edge of the fence.
She picked up the phone, looked around and pressed a number. She waited for the call to connect before speaking lowly.
“I need to leave. They caught on to me. I was able to distract them from the real plant poison. It’s only a matter of time before she dies.”
“Before who dies?” A voice said in the dark shadows and the woman looked like she’s seen a ghost.
