A Day of Laughter and Healing

Book:Revenge On My Ex Husband Published:2025-2-8

Sunlight poured into the backyard of Ethan’s home, casting warm rays over the lush grass and the small play area he’d set up for the day. The air was filled with the laughter of children, unburdened by the weight of the past few days. Ethan and Ella had agreed: today would be about fun, a chance to give the kids-and themselves-a reprieve from the chaos that had engulfed their lives.
Grace was inseparable from Leo and Liam. Since their return, she had stayed close to her brothers, clinging to them as if afraid they might disappear again. The twins, who adored their little sister, indulged her every whim, happy to have her by their side.
Ethan stepped into the backyard carrying a large basket filled with snacks and drinks, a grin spreading across his face as he watched the children chase each other around the yard. Ella followed, carrying a stack of brightly colored water balloons.
“Alright, everyone!” Ethan called out, catching their attention. “Who’s ready for some action?”
The twins and Grace squealed with delight, rushing toward their parents.
“Water balloon fight!” Ella declared, holding up the balloons with a mischievous glint in her eye.
Leo and Liam exchanged excited looks. “Boys versus girls!” Liam shouted, earning a giggle from Grace.
“Not fair!” Grace pouted. “There’s only one girl!”
“Don’t worry, Grace,” Ella said, crouching to her level. “We’ll make the boys regret underestimating us.”
The teams were set, and soon the yard became a battleground of laughter and shrieks as water balloons exploded in bursts of cool mist. Ethan found himself targeted by all three children, their delighted cries echoing as they drenched him from head to toe.
“Truce!” Ethan shouted, holding up his hands in surrender.
“No way, Daddy!” Leo said, launching a balloon with surprising precision. It hit Ethan square in the chest, earning cheers from his siblings.
Ella laughed so hard she could barely throw her own balloons. Watching Ethan play with the kids, his hair soaked and a wide grin on his face, made her heart swell. Despite everything they’d been through, moments like this reminded her of what truly mattered.
After hours of play, the group finally collapsed on the soft grass, basking in the glow of the setting sun. Ethan handed out sandwiches and juice boxes, the children eagerly digging in. Grace sat beside him, her small hands clutching her sandwich tightly.
“Daddy,” she said softly, her voice trembling.
Ethan turned to her, his smile fading as he saw the tears brimming in her eyes. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
She hesitated, glancing at Leo and Liam before looking back at her father. “Will Liam and Leo leave again? Will Mommy take them away?”
Ethan’s heart clenched at her words. He reached out, pulling Grace into his arms. “Never, my love,” he said firmly, his voice filled with conviction. “Never again.”
Grace’s tears spilled over as she clung to him. “I don’t want her to be my mommy again, Daddy,” she sobbed. “I don’t like her. I don’t want her to take me away.”
Ethan held her tightly, stroking her hair as he whispered soothing words. “You’re safe here, Grace. With me, with Liam and Leo, and with Ella. No one is going to take you away. I promise.”
Her sobs gradually subsided, her small body relaxing against his chest. Ethan kissed the top of her head, his own eyes misting as he held her close.
Leo and Liam watched the exchange quietly, their usually boisterous energy subdued. Once Grace had fallen asleep in Ethan’s arms, the twins scooted closer.
“We missed you, Dad,” Liam said, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
“Yeah,” Leo added, his arms wrapping around his father. “We’re glad we’re here.”
Ethan’s heart swelled as he pulled the twins into a hug, holding all three of his children close. “I missed you boys, too. More than you’ll ever know.”
The twins stayed in their father’s embrace, their eyes growing heavy as the day’s excitement caught up with them. Before long, all three children were fast asleep, their peaceful faces a testament to the comfort they felt in Ethan’s presence.
Ella stood nearby, watching the scene with a tender smile. The sight of Ethan cradling their children, his love for them evident in every touch and glance, brought a lump to her throat.
She walked over quietly, careful not to disturb them. Bending down, she placed a soft kiss on each child’s forehead and then on Ethan’s cheek. “Goodnight,” she whispered.
Ethan looked up at her, his eyes filled with gratitude. “Thank you,” he said, his voice barely audible.
“For what?” she asked, tilting her head.
“For believing in me,” he said simply. “For giving me this chance to be with them.”
Ella smiled, her heart full. “You’ve earned it.”
As she straightened, she glanced around the yard, taking in the scattered remnants of their day. “I’ll clean up,” she said, motioning to the empty juice boxes and stray water balloons.
Ethan nodded, his focus returning to the sleeping children. Ella moved quietly, gathering the mess and tidying the space. Despite the exhaustion tugging at her, she felt a deep sense of peace.
When everything was cleaned and put away, Ella returned to the house, checking in on Ethan and the kids one last time before heading to bed. The image of them together-Ethan, with his arms full of the three people he loved most-stayed with her as she drifted off to sleep, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks.
The next morning, Ella awoke early, the sound of birds chirping outside her window. She stretched, feeling a sense of calm she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Walking downstairs, she found Ethan in the kitchen, already preparing breakfast. The children were still asleep, their laughter from the previous day a memory that lingered warmly in the air.
“Morning,” Ethan said, flashing her a smile as he flipped pancakes. “Sleep well?”
“Better than I have in years,” Ella admitted, pouring herself a cup of coffee.
They sat at the table together, sharing quiet conversation as the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and syrup filled the room. When the children finally stirred, their sleepy faces lit up at the sight of the breakfast spread waiting for them. It was another simple yet beautiful moment, one that felt like a step toward healing.
Later that day, the family took a walk through the neighborhood park, the children running ahead to explore the playground. Ella and Ethan strolled behind them, their hands brushing occasionally as they talked about the future. For the first time, the path ahead felt clear-not without challenges, but full of possibility.
“I never thought we’d get here,” Ella admitted, her gaze following the children as they climbed the jungle gym.
“Neither did I,” Ethan replied, his voice thoughtful. “But I’m glad we did. And I’m glad we did it together.”
Ella looked at him, a soft smile on her lips. “Me too.”
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the park in hues of gold and amber, the family made their way back home. The children chattered excitedly about their day, their voices filling the air with joy. Ella and Ethan shared a knowing glance, their hearts full as they listened to the sound of their family’s happiness.
In that moment, Ella realized that healing wasn’t a destination-it was a journey. And with Ethan and their children by her side, she knew they would face whatever came next together, stronger than ever.
