OLIVIA
“Ma’am, what happened between you both? I heard Cyril yell at you from my office. His voice was so loud, it got the attention of other staff. Did he do anything to hurt you?” Kate asked me after she returned to my office.
I wasn’t even aware that Cyril’s voice was so loud. I got concerned about how I was going to defend myself.
I sat down and rested my head on the desk. I looked pale and helpless. How do I go about telling Kate that Cyril already found out about my affair with Adrian? She won’t even believe me, even if I explain a thousand times.
Ma’am, you’re not saying anything, and you still haven’t answered my question. Do you need me to get you a glass of coffee? I’d gladly do that for you,” Kate offered, noticing my speechlessness.
“Yes, please. I will need something like that,” I quickly obliged. It was precisely what I required. I was just too weak to admit it.
While I waited for Kate’s return, I planned on how to get out of the trauma. Unfortunately, I wasn’t thinking straight. I could barely rack my head to save my life. My head was banging heavily like a clubhouse.
In no time, Kate returned with the glass of coffee as promised and handed it over to me. “Here you go, ma’am. I guess this should make you feel better.”
“How do you feel now?” she asked after watching me sip a bit from the glass.
I sighed. “A bit better now. This helped a lot. Thank you so much for coming through for me. You are a lifesaver. I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t shown up.”
“Don’t mention, ma’am. I got you. You deserve the good things in life. I will ensure that you don’t have a reason to be left alone. I will stand by you in the stormy weather,” Kate vowed.
Her smile was golden. It played a vital role in softening my heart, which had been shattered for a long time.
Each time I go through a lot, I stay rejuvenated, knowing that Kate will never leave me, no matter what. Aside from Adrian’s recent support, Kate is the reason I haven’t given up on life. She makes me want to stand up and fight for what is mine.
After the assurance that I was better, Kate picked up the empty glasses and returned them. Moments later, Kate was already in my office again. This time, she held a couple of files.
“Ma’am, here are the files you asked me to get you before we went shopping with Adrian. I want to assume that you’ve forgotten about them. I figured it was best for me to remind you,” Kate reported.
I pointed to the desk and instructed her to drop it. She obeyed.
However, I noticed something strange about Kate. Not only did she itch her head, but she was also reluctant to leave. I needed no one to tell me that something was bothering her mind.
“Is there something wrong with you, Kate? You already dropped the files on the desk. Why haven’t you left already? Don’t you have something important to do with your time?” I queried Kate. I couldn’t keep my observation to myself anymore.
“I don’t know how to say this. I am scared that you might be mad at me,” she stated and paused to look sideways.
“Kate, get on with it already. I don’t have the luxury of time to do this with you. I’ve got a hectic day. Please don’t worsen it,” I snarled. I was madly upset with Kate, yet I was able to speak softly. I had lost the strength to scream after the nasty encounter with Cyril.
“I kind of eavesdropped on your conversation with Cyril. I am aware that he has found out about your romance with Adrian. I am also aware that he wants a divorce,” Kate confessed.
It was indeed a terrible confession, but what was I going to do about it? Absolutely nothing. Where do I even start yelling at her?
“Is that all?” I acted unbothered, but deep down, it had become a difficult puzzle for me to solve.
“So you are not going to do anything about it? What if Cyril does something crazy to Adrian? We all know how crazy he could get,” Kate raised the alarm.
Instantly, I felt a sparkle in my head, as though there was something I wasn’t getting right. A thorough check on what Kate told me, and I realized that she was right.
“Oh, that’s true. Why didn’t I think about it before? Damn!” I soliloquized.
Without wasting time, I called Adrian, but he wasn’t taking his calls. This raised my blood pressure higher. A thousand times, I texted Adrian, hoping that he would respond, but to no avail.
“He’s not picking up or replying to his texts. What am I going to do now?” I complained to Kate. I felt this hotness inside of me, as though I wanted to pee in my panties.
“Could it be that…” Kate paused. Without completing her utterance, I already knew what she wanted to speak about.
“Do we reach out to the cops immediately and complain?” I suggested. I couldn’t bear to see Adrian get hurt for my sins. I won’t forgive myself if that ever happened.
“I am calling Officer Matthew already. I can’t stand this,” I freaked out. I started dialing Officer Matthew’s number for some backup as the situation had become too big for me to handle.
With a move too fast, Kate snatched the phone from me. “I am not letting you do that. We are not even sure if Cyril had done anything crazy to Adrian.”
“Then when do you suggest we do?” I cried for a solution. I was losing my mind.
“There’s only one way to find out. We need to visit Adrian’s mansion and feed house. That way, we get the answers to all our questions,” Kate proposed.
I was speechless.
I couldn’t have imagined what would have happened to me if Kate weren’t in my life.
That wasn’t the first time she had come through for me. The way she came up with a solution got me wondering if she was my assistant or my legal advisor.
“I will just go wait for you in the car. Please permit me to drive. I can’t bear to see you drive in this situation,” Kate grabbed my car keys and left, leaving me behind.
She didn’t even wait to seek my approval. Seeing how she had come through for me in recent times, I couldn’t get mad at her.
I took a quick scan around my office, ensuring everything was in place before heading outside to join her. Unlike me, who had wasted time, Kate was already settled and waiting behind the wheel.
“Are you ready for this?” she asked as I slid into the passenger seat, still panting from anxiety.
“More than anything in this world,” I answered, gripping my phone tightly as Kate started the car.
As we drove to Adrian’s house, I kept dialing his number over and over, clinging to the hope that this time-just this once-he would pick up.
