Ulric didn’t dare to think about how difficult Rosalind’s life had been with two children over the years.
“I’m fine, my hands are cold because you made me angry.”
If he could talk nonsense, so could she!
Ulric just smiled. As long as he could hold her hand again, she could say whatever she wanted.
After finally buying all the groceries, as soon as they left the supermarket, Rosalind quickly pulled her hand back and got into the back seat of the car. She was afraid Ulric would find another reason to make her sit in the front passenger seat.
After putting everything in place, Ulric got into the car. He didn’t comment on her sitting in the back seat; he just started the engine and drove towards Easthaven Bay.
Jake had been waiting for a long time, practically ready to sit at the dining table with a knife and fork!
Finally, there was the sound of the door code being entered. He rushed to the door. “You’re finally back-huh?”
Jake paused because he saw not only Ulric but also Rosalind.
The three of them stood in the hallway, each lost in their thoughts.
It was Ulric who broke the silence first. He smiled and patted his son’s head. “I’ll cook. Jake, help me entertain our guest.”
Jake reluctantly gave an OK gesture.
Rosalind watched Ulric go to the kitchen before pulling her son aside and lowering her voice. “Did you tell him something?”
“No, I didn’t!”
“Then why did he invite me here after what happened last time?” Rosalind wasn’t stupid; she sensed something was off.
Jake licked his lips and suddenly had an idea.
“Yes! After you left last time, he scolded me! He said you are the woman he loves most and that I should get along well with you!”
“…”
“Mommy, you sit here for a while! I’ll go help him in the kitchen!”
With that, Jake dashed off.
He couldn’t stay any longer; if she asked more questions, he’d surely slip up.
Jake sneaked into the kitchen and even closed the door behind him. His tone was slightly reproachful. “Why did you bring Mommy here again? She suspects I told you something!”
“Don’t worry. Just deny everything, and she won’t be able to do anything.”
Jake pouted. “Didn’t you say kids shouldn’t lie?”
Ulric wiped his hands dry and bent down to pick up his son.
“If I don’t bring her back, your Uncle Malcolm will take her away!” That wouldn’t do at all.
Malcolm’s intentions towards Rosalind were crystal clear.
Jake tilted his head in thought for a moment before suddenly understanding. “Ah! I get it! Uncle Malcolm is your rival in love, right? You’re afraid he’ll take Mommy away, then you won’t have a wife!”
“My son is so smart.” Ulric smiled, liking the word ‘wife.’ “Jake, do you know where your sister is now?”
“I don’t know. I’ve been abroad all this time; Aunt Tilda takes care of my sister! Mommy said I look too much like you and might get taken away, so she didn’t let me stay in the country.”
“Do you miss your sister?”
“Of course!” Jake started talking excitedly about his sister. “She looks a bit like Mommy-clumsy but super cute! And she loves candy!”
Loves candy?
A face flashed through Ulric’s mind-the little girl he had met earlier in Wayer City.
