She was truly furious, walking quickly, her entire back radiating anger and disgust.
Jaquan slumped in the back seat, closing his eyes as a headache set in.
The driver was unsure of what to do, hesitant to either leave or stay. “Mr. Scott… well…”
When he opened his eyes again, Callie’s figure had already disappeared. He picked up the unfinished bottle of water, unscrewed the cap, and poured it over his head.
The cold water cleared his mind.
Jaquan’s face remained stern. “Back to the office.”
Meanwhile, Callie, still fuming, returned directly to the studio. Her hands were trembling. The thought of Jaquan’s transgression made her feel nauseous.
In her mind, Jaquan had always been a principled and loyal man. If they weren’t on opposing sides, they might have even become friends. But today, he had said such things to her…
Lover…
How could he say that?
“Callie, what’s wrong?” An employee asked, noticing Callie’s disheveled state.
“Nothing.” Callie headed straight to the restroom.
She stared at herself in the mirror, beginning to doubt if Jaquan had always been that kind of person.
His intense gaze lingered in her mind. Leaning against the wall, she felt a sense of foreboding accompanied by a racing heart.
Once she calmed down, she walked out and announced to her employees, “I won’t be following up on the Scott Group project. Jade, you and Eliza will oversee it on-site.”
No one dared to question the leader’s decision.
Jade saw it as a great opportunity for growth. “Got it, Callie.”
Callie glanced at Regan’s empty office.
“How long has she been absent?”
“About three to five days.”
Callie nodded and took out her phone to send Regan a message: This morning’s news, Isaac will return to Ylosea soon. Be careful.
If Isaac returned, chaos would surely follow. She could only warn Regan and hope she could avoid it.
After sending the message, Callie left the studio. While taking the elevator down, she called Reuben. When he answered, she asked, “Reuben, are you at home?”
“Me? I’m at the hospital.”
Callie tensed up immediately. “Hospital? What are you doing at the hospital?”
“Your memory is worse than mine. Today is my follow-up appointment.”
With that reminder, Callie slapped her forehead. “Right, I forgot. Are you alone? Is Joaquin with you?”
“You all are busy. Don’t worry about me. I’m almost fully recovered. I can handle a follow-up alone.” The background noise confirmed he was indeed at the hospital.
Callie grew anxious. “Reuben, send me the address. I’ll come pick you up right now. Don’t wander around.”
“You think I can get lost? Fine, I’ll wait here for you.”
“Okay, stay put. It’s too chaotic outside. Don’t make me search for you.”
“Alright,” Reuben replied gently.
The doctor called his number, and Reuben ended the call to go in. His memory wasn’t great, but he knew the hospital well after spending years there.
Reuben thought optimistically.
Callie hailed a cab and contacted Nelson’s driver to meet her at the hospital.
She felt guilty for being so busy that she forgot to care for Reuben. She regretted it deeply and resolved to take good care of him once he moved into Paucaster Villa.
