“Enough,” he said sternly.
Marilyn’s face was grim.
Callie took a deep breath and stepped out of the crowd. “Mrs. Scott, you seem very busy. Why not leave this to me? I’ll educate her for you.”
“You?” Marilyn frowned at Callie, seemingly unconvinced.
“Business is important.”
People around whispered that Charlotte and Callie did look somewhat alike.
Marilyn couldn’t continue to make things difficult in front of so many socialites and noblewomen. She glared at Charlotte fiercely before striding away.
Jaquan gave Callie a look and followed Marilyn.
As the crowd dispersed, Callie walked up to Charlotte and extended her hand. “Get up.”
The surroundings were in disarray. The cool and calm woman standing before her seemed like a savior.
Charlotte hesitated for a moment but eventually took Callie’s hand to stand up. “Mrs. Oconnor.”
“You remember me,” Callie slightly tilted her head.
“We met in Afupshire last time.”
Back then, Callie had made things difficult for her to get the information she wanted.
Callie nodded and walked to the counter. “A hot cocoa, please.”
The server quickly prepared it and brought it to her. Callie handed it directly to Charlotte. “Warm yourself up.”
The winter wind was strong, and the two stood against it. Charlotte seemed very uneasy. “Mrs. Oconnor, thank you for helping me today. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”
Callie smiled faintly. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll make things difficult for you?”
“No. You’re not that kind of person.”
Charlotte’s certainty puzzled Callie. “You seem to know me well.”
“From a few brief encounters with Mr. Oconnor, he mentioned you.”
Hearing this, Charlotte cautiously observed Callie’s expression.
Callie nodded. “Last time in Afupshire, it was due to circumstances, not intentional difficulty. If you’re unhappy, you can vent to me.”
Charlotte looked surprised. “Our statuses are worlds apart; how could I dare vent to you?”
She hadn’t felt it before, but now Callie realized that becoming Mrs. Oconnor came with heavy shackles.
“I’m just an ordinary person who happened to catch a man’s favor and became Mrs. Oconnor. The power and wealth are given by others, nothing to be in awe of.”
Her words were clear and sober, making Charlotte look at her differently. She smiled bitterly. “No wonder Mr. Oconnor likes you…”
“You’re not following Jaquan anymore. Why are you working at a coffee shop?”
Her clothes were clearly those of an employee.
“Today is my day off. I came out to work part-time and didn’t expect to meet Mrs. Scott…” Charlotte looked embarrassed.
“She didn’t mean any harm earlier.”
“I know, it’s just that I’m not steady enough in my work.”
“Short on money?” Callie asked the crucial question.
“People like us never think we have enough money. I’m not from Ylosea, and I need more money to settle down here,” Charlotte said awkwardly.
“Jaquan isn’t stingy. The trip to Afupshire should have paid well,” Callie responded lightly.
Hearing this, Charlotte immediately looked up, her expression filled with panic. “Mrs. Oconnor…”
Callie just looked at her.
“I didn’t do it on purpose,” referring to the video.
“I know, I watched the whole thing and naturally won’t wrong you,” Callie’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Jaquan hired you for a job and paid quite a bit, right?”
