Nelson was quite pleased with the term “my husband.”
He extended his hand, “Hello, Aimee.”
Aimee’s eyes turned playful as she scrutinized the two of them. “Mr. Oconnor and Mrs. Oconnor truly make a perfect couple, strolling through the campus together, making everyone envious.”
Earlier, Aimee knew Callie was married but didn’t know to whom. Now, having seen the trending news and witnessing it in person, she realized Nelson had an even stronger presence than in photos.
Callie felt happy but also somewhat uneasy, her smile not entirely natural. “Aimee, when did you return to Ylosea? Let me treat you to a meal sometime.”
“What does it mean for you to treat me? Won’t Mr. Oconnor join us?”
Nelson nodded, “You’re Callie’s friend. If you honor us with your presence, I certainly won’t neglect you.”
Aimee raised an eyebrow and smiled ambiguously at Callie, as if to say she was benefiting from Callie’s status.
“I returned yesterday. I wanted to find you but thought you might be busy now, so I didn’t disturb you.”
Callie frowned, “How could that be?”
Nelson released her hand and stepped slightly aside. “You two chat; I’ll wait for you in the car.”
Before Callie could respond, Aimee grabbed her arm. “Mr. Oconnor, aren’t you afraid I’ll steal your wife away?”
Nelson merely chuckled, “She’ll come back on her own.”
There was absolute trust in his eyes.
After Nelson got into the car, Callie finally looked away. Aimee showed a hint of nervousness. “Is he really good to you?”
Callie sighed, “Why does everyone like to ask that?”
The two walked slowly side by side by the lake. Aimee said, “I didn’t come alone today.”
Callie paused slightly and understood what she meant through their eye contact.
“He’s here today. Do you want to see him?”
Their acquaintance was because of Jamir. Aimee was his ex-girlfriend. After he went abroad and lost contact with people back home, the two women became closer.
Callie looked into the distance. “I’ve already seen him. There’s no need to meet again.”
“I’ve moved on, but I don’t know about you. What do you really think?”
Callie shook her head helplessly. “Do I look like I’m still hung up on him? When he decided to leave me, I already let him go.”
Aimee frowned, “But as far as I know, Jamir’s mother came to see you back then. That’s part of the reason why you broke up.”
“If two people are in love, such obstacles are nothing. Breakup only means someone wasn’t determined enough.”
“What if… he had his reasons back then?”
Callie looked at her and answered seriously, “Aimee, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
Back in the car, Nelson was working on his laptop. He held her hand. “Are you cold?”
The tension in Callie’s heart eased when she saw him. She shook her head. “Are we going back to Paucaster Villa?”
“I just got word that there’s a meeting at Oconnor Group that I need to attend. Should I have Kieran take you home?”
Callie shook her head. “No, I’ll go with you.”
Nelson smiled. “Alright.”
He handed her a stack of documents. “We have fifteen minutes. Go through these as much as you can and remember what you can.”
Callie flipped through the pages filled with dense data. It was hard enough just to read them, let alone remember.
“Am I going too?”
Nelson’s phone had already received several calls from Anthony.
“How about being my assistant?” he raised an eyebrow.
“Huh?”
