Kayden’s blade hovered by Dennis’s arm, just a fraction of a second away from severing it completely.
He stopped abruptly and turned his head to look at Mr. Roberts.
The old man, sensing danger, immediately pleaded, “I don’t know if you’d consider sparing his hand! If you cut it off, he’ll be a complete cripple. Even though he’s from the Lloyd family, I’m not asking you to show them any respect. But I can exchange something you want to know for his hand!”
Kayden frowned, intrigued.
“Exchange?” he repeated, his tone sharp. “Are you trying to bargain with me?”
He stared at Mr. Roberts, making it clear that this old man wasn’t even qualified to negotiate with him.
Despite his fear, Mr. Roberts gritted his teeth and replied, “Yes, you could say it’s a trade!”
“Everyone knows I’m the one who knows everything about Vernon! If something has happened in Vernon, I know about it. A month ago, someone cured the terminal illness of the John family’s heir. There was a battle at the Scott family’s estate that destroyed one of their ancestral homes. Three years ago, three powerful figures in Vernon mysteriously disappeared. They didn’t vanish-they were killed-but their deaths were concealed because of how strange they were.”
“”
“And ten years ago, a reclusive master healer came to Vernon. He treated a highly respected doctor here. Others may not know who he was, but I know-his name was Maverick Quinn!”
In one breath, Mr. Roberts rattled off a series of secrets about Vernon, ranging from the classified to the forgotten. It was clear he truly had extraordinary knowledge.
Kayden hesitated for a moment, then sheathed his blade. His gaze remained fixed on Mr. Roberts. “It seems you do know quite a bit about Vernon.”
Mr. Roberts, emboldened, said confidently, “Yes. Otherwise, I wouldn’t dare call myself all-knowing. You’ve come to Vernon for a reason, haven’t you? Whatever it is, just ask. If it’s happened before, I can tell you.”
Kayden studied Mr. Roberts’ self-assured demeanor and found himself a little impressed.
“Fine. If you can answer my question, I’ll spare him.”
He leaned in and asked, “Do you know what happened at Bamboo House a few days ago-the murder case?”
Mr. Roberts frowned in thought before answering frankly. “I do. Several people from the region were killed. The area was sealed off afterward. I don’t know how they were killed, but I do know the killer was a woman. And I know her purpose was to take another woman away.”
This matched what Kayden already knew. He was about to speak when Mr. Roberts added, “I also know where she went.”
Kayden’s heart raced. After searching for answers for so long, he finally seemed to have found someone with valuable information.
“Where did she go?” Kayden asked, his voice tense and deliberate.
Without hesitation, Mr. Roberts replied, “To the John family-Memphis John.”
Hearing this, Kayden’s brow furrowed again. He nodded slightly and asked, “Who? Memphis John?”
“Exactly! She went to see Memphis John. I found out so quickly because Bamboo House is run by someone who used to work for me. I happened to be there that day and learned about it firsthand,” Mr. Roberts explained.
“I followed her myself, only to watch her vanish into the John family estate.”
As Mr. Roberts spoke, Kayden’s piercing eyes never left him. Judging by his demeanor, it seemed he was telling the truth.
Kayden nodded faintly. “Alright. I’ll spare him for now. But if I find out you’ve lied to me, you know what will happen.”
Mr. Roberts nodded repeatedly, his face pale. “Yes, yes! I wouldn’t dare lie to you.”
Without another word, Kayden turned and left the Lloyd family estate. His actions were always straightforward and brutal. He was known for his decisiveness, no matter where he went.
Having lived through the chaos of battlefields, he had grown accustomed to such a lifestyle. The current Kayden was already much more restrained than he used to be. Without the changes brought by his three missing years of memory, perhaps everyone in the Lloyd family villa would have been slaughtered.
Mr. Roberts watched Kayden leave, exhaling deeply as if he had just returned from the gates of hell.
“Mr. Roberts, is he really that powerful?” Dennis asked, his face blank with disbelief.
Mr. Roberts nodded. “Yes, he’s exactly that powerful. You’ve messed with the wrong person this time.”
Dennis’ heart pounded in his chest. After a moment, he gritted his teeth and muttered, “But that doesn’t mean he can get involved with my wife!”
“No,” Mr. Roberts said, shaking his head. “He’s not involved with your wife. She’s his aunt.”
“What?” Dennis felt as though his heart was about to burst. His eyes widened as he stared at Mr. Roberts. “Mr. Roberts, are you sure? My wife is his aunt?”
Stephanie had mentioned this before, but Dennis had dismissed it as nonsense.
Mr. Roberts nodded again. “Yes. He’s from the Scott family. I’ve known for a while that the Scott family had a son who dominated the battlefield. When I saw him today, I immediately knew. He’s Ambrose Scott’s son-Kayden!”
As he finished speaking, Mr. Roberts slowly stood up, his face filled with admiration for Kayden. He had always believed the Scott family would rise again, but he hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly.
Dennis looked stunned, his facial muscles twitching uncontrollably. He knew about Ambrose Scott-how he had died, and how his son had disappeared.
But now, it seemed Ambrose Scott’s son had returned, wielding incredible power.
“So, I really misunderstood my wife?” Dennis muttered, his entire worldview crumbling. His pupils seemed to lose focus as he processed the revelation.
Mr. Roberts nodded slightly. “For now, it looks that way. But, young master, if you don’t like her, why keep her by your side? Don’t accuse someone of betrayal just because you can’t appreciate what they’ve done for you. This is a mistake of your own making, and you should accept the consequences.”
Dennis didn’t seem to hear him. Swallowing hard, he muttered to himself, “I’ll go beg my wife! Maybe there’s still a chance!”
With that, he left the room, running out the door with trembling determination.
