Kamara’s POV
“Come on Kamara, how can you decide to go on a shopping spree with Nana and leave me in the dark?” Chantelle whined over the phone as I searched for something to wear in my closet. We haven’t gone out for a walk in a while so Nana and I decided to go shopping for the baby beforehand.
It’s only been two months but it wasn’t like I could say no to her when she was so excited. “You’re in Chicago for the weekend, Chantelle. When you’re done with work, we can always go out anytime.” I rolled my eyes, checking out an outfit in the mirror.
“Next time? Do you think Diego will let you out?” She said and I cringed at the mention of his name. I haven’t seen him again since three nights ago when we had dinner together and he grumbled all through dinner. I spent hours on those dishes even if they were meant for Nana and not him.
“Then we’ll just have to sneak out.” I replied, a smile spreading across my face at the idea of sneaking out. The chances would be slim but I want to see the look of horror on his face when he yells and screams at me for sneaking out without being watched.
“Why do you taunt this man a lot? Just so you know, I value my life so I wouldn’t like his gun pointed at my throat for having a hand in your scheme.” She replied and I could hear crashing and falling from the other side of the phone. “Ouch… Come on, Kam. We haven’t even decided on anything and you’re mad at me because I said no?”
“I didn’t do anything. Don’t blame your clumsiness on me idiot.” I hissed, finally changing into the sunset yellow dress Nana got for me. I looked so beautiful in it and I knew that myself.
The sound of my door shutting made me look up to see Nana there, already dressed and smiling at me as she saw my outfit. “You look really beautiful dear. Now, the car is waiting down and let’s leave early.”
“Is that Nana?” Chantelle screamed from the other side of the phone.
“Oh, Chantelle honey.”
“Nana, I missed you. How can you two go on a trip without me? Not fair.” Chantelle whined and if she was before me, I swore I would hit her instantly.
“Don’s worry darling, we can always go out once you return.” Nana laughed as they continued to chit chat till we arrived down in the car. For once, there wasn’t a lot of guards around and my first thought was Nana had something to do with that. At least I appreciate her not being as strict and boring as that douche bag.
“Talk to you later, Kam. I have a lot of clothes I bought for us to try and I swear you’ll love it.” She squealed before hanging up.
“What a sweet girl she is.” Nana laughed, looking out the window as the driver drove out of the huge compound. Till now, I still don’t get why one would live in this type of gigantic compound and not even be around. Tch, I’ve been thinking about him a lot and it just pissing me off how everything about him just pisses me off.
“I want to knit some sweater for the baby soon.” Nana said to me, holding my hand with a bright smile. “I’m sure you’re mad at Diego for being how he is but you just have to bear with him, okay dear? He’s just a special child with some past pains.”
I doubted that. He found joy in trying to make my life miserable and trying to control me. I’ve thought a lot of times if this was a bad idea but returning his money with something as little as this should be enough for me to bear.
“I understand you, Nana.” I replied halfheartedly. Although I was going to miss her once I leave, it’s all a part of life.
“We’re here, madam.” The driver announced as we got to the mall. I got out of the car with Nana who excitedly led me along carefully into the mall. It was huge and wasn’t a place you would see high ranking people roaming around without having guards but Nana had a different idea. Having guards would only draw attention to you. She said that everytime.
We strolled around the mall shopping here and there for what felt hours and she looked excited so I couldn’t complain with the huge box of chicken she had gotten for me. The caretaker Diego got me would faint at the sight of this. I mean, I am a pregnant woman who would have cravings aren’t I?
“We should be returning soon.” Nana said before she spotted another thing she wanted. “Come over here dear…”
I didn’t catch the rest of what she was saying I stumbled as someone dressed in all black crashed into me. “Hey, watch where you’re going” My words died in my throat as soon as I felt a strong hit on my side.
I felt like the air in my lungs was knocked out from that simple hit. Before I could recover, two other figures closed in, attempting to grab me but a swift kick came from me, breaking free from their grasp. Rushing over to Nana who just realized what was going on.
She grabbed me, attempting to make a run for it but the sounds of gunshots ripped through the air, the glass doors before us shattering at the impact of the shots. At the same time, a sharp pain shot through my arm as I felt something hit my arm.
I had been shot.
The mall erupted into chaos screams, running footsteps, more gunfire but I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. Before I could make sense of anything, someone shoved me aside. A thud echoing next to me.
I turned and my stomach dropped.
Nana laid there, blood pooling from her side.
“N-nana?”
