Chapter 214: Bar hopping

Book:A Second Chance Published:2025-2-7

I didn’t really enjoy the beach that day… not because I wasn’t happy with Dale and Jack’s company but because my mind was too occupied and always drifting back to what Jack had told me earlier.
My heart really wanted to believe what she told me, but my brain… it kept screaming at me not to believe any of it. Yeah, because who would believe something like that, right? If he really doesn’t love her, then why stay in that relationship? Why give his girlfriend a false hope?
-‘Why don’t you ask him?’- My mind screamed.
-‘No way! Why would I do that?’- I screamed at her too.
-‘So you would know the truth and not ask so many questions to yourself!’-
-‘Nope, I’m fine! I can still handle this feelings. Whatever his reasons are for doing this, well, it’s up to him.’-
And throughout the day …
I didn’t even feel David’s presence. Why? Because we had been at the beach less than 2 hours when Jack called him and said he had a phone call and I didn’t even need to ask who the caller was because I already knew who it was based on the kind of look Jack was giving me. It was Tanya for sure.
He came back after an hour but in less than 30 minutes he excused himself again that he would only speak to the caller… that same caller. He didn’t say who it was, which he really didn’t need to because at that moment it doesn’t take a genius to figure it out.
The second time he answered the call he took longer than the first time and the third time he never returned. If he truly didn’t love her, he would ignore her calls, but no, he took all her calls and gone all of sudden.
“Whew!” I breathed harshly. Is this what Jack meant when she said I need to eat because I will need it physically and emotionally?
After taking another deep and long sigh, I started to focus my attention on playing beach volleyball with Jack, Dale and other players who were also on the beach at that time, so I couldn’t think about where he was, what he was doing and if he decided to go back to work. I have no right to ask him after all.

After playing, I decided to swim alone to soothe my not-so-tired muscles and of course, to wash the sweat off my skin. I had been relaxing in the water for about an hour when two pairs of young people or should I say teenagers arrived… two boys and two girls who looked to be in their under twenties. They were talking about the night bars at the resort, all of which are open from 7 pm to 5 am. And I don’t know what came into my mind and suddenly I decided to go there tonight even if I’m alone.
Yeah, so what if I’m alone? I can’t see anything wrong going there by myself, duh!
We returned to the cottage around 4 pm and I haven’t left my room since then. I just called Cali, asked her how her day went and after I ended the call, I took a shower and then started getting ready for my bar-hopping later… alone!

“Where are you off to?”
I held my breath when I found my brother in the living room with a laptop in front of him and a phone in his hand. I simply looked around to see who was there with him but I didn’t see anyone else. I guess Jack was in their room maybe getting ready to sleep or taking a shower and getting ready for … you know what I mean. And David …? I don’t know where he was at that moment, because he still hasn’t come back since this morning.
“Uhm… I will try the new menu of the seafood restaurant at the end of this beach. I heard earlier from the teenagers that they will serve the first 50 customers for free.” I lied… crossing my fingers behind my back.
He stared at me, frowning at what he had heard. I knew this would happen, so I came out of my room prepared. I was wearing a spaghetti strapped crop top. It’s a sexy backless camisole in black and I just paired it with a simple denim jeans. And of course, to hide my top from my brother’s hawk eyes, I wore an oversized sweatshirt with hoodie.
“Do you want to come with me?” I threw the best question which, of course, has the best answer. He won’t for sure.
“No!” he hardly shook his head.
“Ohh… what do I expect?” I asked more to myself. “Don’t you want to try it for a change?”
“Tss! Why would I do that if I can buy even all the food in their menu if I want?”
I raised an eyebrow, my lips curving into a smirk.
“Of course, I know with your massive ego, you won’t try something like this,” I huffed. “How about my best friend? Can I have her for a few minutes?”
“Absolutely not! A few minutes your face —”
“Why? What’s wrong with borrowing my best friend?” I laughed at him but more to myself. “Remember, she was my best friend first before she became your girlfriend, duh!” His face slowly turned into serious. A clear indication that I would definitely out on my own tonight… which is the original plan.
“A few minutes? You meant to say a few hours not a few minutes! I know you two when you’re together!” He growled and I chuckled.
“So?”
“So no!”
“Haha… wait a second… Jack—” I pretended to scream and call my best friend but he quickly stood up and flew in front of me and in an instant, his palm covered my mouth.
“What is wrong with you?” I asked, trying to get his hand off my mouth.
“Don’t you dare scream and call her!” His eyes were as wide as saucers and I wanted to laugh at him but I dared not.
“Why not? I don’t have anyone with me so I want her with me!”
“No! Why don’t you just call David so he could be with you and not bring my girlfriend with you?”
“Tss!” I snorted. “I don’t even know where he is that’s why I want Jack to come with me!”
“No!” He narrowed his eyes which I just laughed at. “You’re grown up, I know you can go by yourself, so go! Get out just come back in one piece!” He spun me around, grabbed both my shoulders and pushed me slowly until we reached the door.
“Ouch! I’m your sister but you’re choosing her over me!” I pretended to be hurt, but deep down inside, my heart and mind were silently screaming in excitement.
“I love you, Sam, you’re my favorite sister, but I’m sorry, because right now, I love Jack more than anything —”
“Hmmp! It’s as if you have other siblings, duh!” I rolled my eyes. “Selfish!” I snapped.
“Sis, you’ve been in this before so, I know you know what I mean.” He winked, a sly smile creeping on the corner of his lips that made my stomach churn in awkwardness.
“Jeez!”
“Come on, go and leave before Jack leaves the room!” He even pushed me to walk away.
“Fine! But don’t you dare cry if something bad happened to me, huh!”
“Samantha!” He whisper-yelled, his eyes squinted as he called my name and gave me a silent warning. He doesn’t like it when I say something like that.
“Just kidding!” I laughed at his reaction. “Fine, I’m off to go!” I leaned forward to kiss him on the check which he returned by kissing my forehead too.
“Take care, Sam, good luck!”
“Tss! Good luck my foot!” I snorted and decided not to respond because why would I still when it’s already the best opportunity to go, run away and be free at least for a few hours.
Haha… I don’t plan to come back early tonight… but early in the morning tomorrow.

Thanks to Dale, I was able to leave the house at 7:30, and since the new late-night bar that just opened was quite a distance… which was right at the end of the beach, I got there around 8:30. I also walked slowly because I was interested in looking at the souvenirs in the shops along the beach.
There were already a lot of people when I arrived at the first bar I went to. Mostly teenagers and some adults were present. And since I intend to visit all the night bars that evening, I ordered a drink with a low alcohol content and thought about ordering drinks with a higher content at the next bar and the same thing in the next.
