Abigail could not believe that instead of debunking the rumours that Cade was an illegitimate child, he was owning it like it was his identity. He was still facing so much backlash for keeping it a secret from the public that the people seemed not to like the idea behind the fact that he was not a full-bodied Cade.
The girls who swooned over him before suddenly began to dislike him. Abigail was thrilled, but she knew that the battle was not easily over; there was no way that Charles would just let him go; she needed to do something that would make the board of directors and all of the people of the nation want him to leave the company. She had to make him unfit.
She was glad that she always prepared for this; while she was busy siphoning money away, she was still actively preparing for someone else to take the blame in her stead, and now it meant that she could easily take all of the blame and dump it on him. She had called Frances into the room to share the news with her; she knew that if she was able to trap Frances as an accomplice if anything went south, she could easily put all of the blame on her and walk out.
“I think that we should not be hasty to push out the news; no matter what they release to the public, no one would easily forget his statement today,” Franves replied after Abigail had expressed her anxiety over the fact that the reporter she trusted had asked her to wait. Of course, they refused to tell her that Charles was behind it if she knew she would lose her mind.
They turned to the door because of a knock on it. “Must be Cael,” Frances murmured happily. She was not supposed to be happy to see him after he had been treating her like trash since they got married, but maybe the news that Cade was finally going down and her husband could emerge was the reason she smiled so happily. “Come in,” she added, and Cael walked into her room and sat on her bed.
“Where have you been all day?” she asked him. She had been trying to go over the plan with him, but he was nowhere to be found. Even when she called his office, they told her that he had not come to work.
“I was at the office.”
“At the office?” Harper asked. She had also tried to reach him, but he was unreachable all day.
“Since when did you get so comfortable at lying that you do it without batting an eyelash?” Abigail asked standing from the couch she was and walking to join him on the bed.
“Lying? Why would I lie? I was at the office, in Grandpa’s office all day,” he explained.
“You were with Charles? Why?” Abigail was eager to know because she knew this could either be good news or bad depending on what they knew.
“He wants us to hand over any implicating evidence, and he would not instate Cade as chairman; after six months he would promote me, and I will become the chairman,” Cael said.
Abigail scoffed and stood to her feet, shaking her head. “And you believe him? You spent the entire day with him chasing his wild goose?” she asked.
“Yes”
“Why?” Frances was truly curious as to whether she had married a dumb man or if he was just pulling their legs.”Are you saying that Grandpa asked you to hand over important documents and you are just going to hand them over?”
“Yes, that is exactly what I am saying,” Cael said.
“Oh my goodness, what am I even doing? I keep trying to make you chairman, and you keep trying your best to sabotage it, why?” Abigail let out a sharp breath.
“I am sure that this document would change the narrative,” he said, giving his mom a document that he had prepared with Charles earlier. He knew that he would not have been able to pull it off by himself, so he was glad that Charles had agreed to help him like that. They had prepared a false document, which Charles had signed, but the lawyer had made sure that the terms in it were going to be voided somehow.
Abigail snatched the paper from his hand and read through it. “What is this?”
“Do you understand it, or do you need a lawyer to look over it? I had to go through all of this just so you stop stressing, but it seems like you do not appreciate it,” he said, trying to snatch the document from her hand. He knew that if they had a lawyer review it, they would be able to know what plot they were planning.
“This is wonderful!” Abigail exclaimed. “How did you do this?” she asked and then shook her head. “It does not matter how you did this; the important thing is that you did it,” she exclaimed happily.
“So are you going to give it to me?” He asked, afraid that the plan was not going to work.
“Of course, I am ready to let go of anything to make sure that you become chairman,” he almost let out a sigh of relief that he had been able to pull this off. “One second,” she announced, going into her closet with her paper and taking something from her safe. “This is all I have gathered, and I am sure it would be useful for him,” she said.
“But mom, you know this might implicate you?” He said, looking at how desperately she was trying to put him on top.
“I will be out in no time,” she said like it was no big deal. She gave him the envelope, and he held on to it and then stood.
“Let me deliver this and just get this over with once and for all,” Cael said and walked out without a word.
“Mom, you did it.”
Abigail looked down at the signed agreement in her hands with joy. “I did it.”
