Chapter 88

Book:Tasting The Enemy Published:2025-2-7

Elaine POV
This was the quietest time I had at this school. The library was the only place I could escape the stares and the whispers. It didn’t matter that people whispered I was a wolf I could hear everything. I didn’t mind when the books stared at me they didn’t judge me maybe it was because they knew what it felt like to be judged.
After my classes, I escaped to the library to finish my assignments. Every lecturer I had took it upon themselves to express their disdain. I understood them though, my Dad was a monster he did a lot to hurt people in this Pack. Because of his stunts, Uncle Damien’s going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
I was glad Fran didn’t hate me for that but it wasn’t the same with everyone else.
I had to work hard to gain everyone’s trust but I couldn’t win over everyone and I had to accept that.
“Elaine?” a deep male voice called.
Dove melted into a puddle when she heard the voice. It was like it was she was still getting to know Azaire. Anyway, her antics made me laugh.
He turned a corner of a bookshelf and appeared.
“Hiding out?”
I closed my textbook. “I’ve got work to do. Don’t tell me you missed me too much.”
Dove certainly missed him. I hadn’t gotten over the negative pregnancy tests. I know I had school and being pregnant wouldn’t have made it easier but I was sure despite how I tried not to think too much about it.
Azaire pulled out a chair and sat next to me. He tugged my chair closer. His cologne surrounded me, enticing me to come closer.
“Something’s wrong with you, Elaine. I know you so just tell me.”
“It’s not just one thing Azaire and I don’t want to talk about it.”
“No baby that won’t work. I need us to talk. I want to help you.”
“No, you want to fix things. It can’t be fixed not right now anyway. I need time.”
He took my face in his palm and exhaled. “I want you to be happy.”
I blinked a few times to fight back the tears. “I’m okay. I have you right?”
“Always.” He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “You’ll always have me.”
“Then don’t worry about it. Is that why you came here?”
“Yeah… and when I got here I saw someone I didn’t expect to see here.”
“Who?” I frowned.
He took my hand and toyed with it for a little bit.
“My ex but I didn’t know her sister went here. I forget I guess.”
“Oh, Zoe, yes I know about her. She’s an influencer with a huge social media following.”
“Y-you’ve met her? And Holly?” I swear sweat form on his brow.
“You mean your ex-girlfriend?” I raised a brow. The one I heard about from Fran. She had a lot to say about Holly.
“I would have told you…”
“The way you told me about Wynter? You know I’ve had other boyfriends too,” I raised a brow.
He rolled his eyes disbelievingly.
“What?”
“Don’t even try it, Elaine. I know I’m the first man you’ve been with.”
“Doesn’t mean you’re the first man I’ve gotten on my knees for.”
His eyes went wide. “What?” he barked.
“Pipe down this is a library,” I snickered.
I gathered my books. He grabbed my hand to stop me.
“I need names or else I won’t look at any guy the same. I barely look at Lucas the right way sometimes.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me about that! It was a mistake and I was drunk.”
I only said what I said to make him jealous. My romantic background wasn’t as colourful as his. I experienced a lot of my firsts with him and he knew it.
“Relax, you’re my only can we get out of here?”
“Are you sure?” he raised a brow.
“Yes, babe.”
He sighed heavily. “Don’t do that to me, Elaine.”
I laughed. “You go ahead I need to find a textbook. I meet you in the car.”
He nodded. “Alright.”
I found my book quickly and checked it out. The school was rather quiet. It was still early days in the semester so there wasn’t much pressure on the students. I struggled to tuck my books in my bag as I hurried to meet Azaire in the parking lot when I bumped into someone and dropped all the books in my bag.
“Dang it,” I muttered. “I’m so sorry,” I said, hurrying to grab my stuff.
Bumping into people wasn’t a great way to make friends.
“Here.”
I looked up to see a pair of honey-brown eyes staring at me.
“Uh… thanks. I’m sorry about that.”
He shrugged his broad shoulders. “It’s okay. It looked like you’re in a rush.”
I nodded, stuffing my belongings in the bag. “Yeah, yeah.”
He was the first person to talk to me cordially what’s the catch?
“I’m Chase,” he said and stuck out his hand.
I shook it hesitantly. “I’m Elaine.”
He chuckled revealing a dimple in his right cheek. “Everyone knows you.”
“For all the wrong reasons.”
His smile faded for a moment. “People can be stupid don’t pay attention to them.”
“Wow, I should be worried about my lecturers being stupid. I’m kinda taking a serious course.”
His smile returned. “If you ask me they’re even bigger morons.”
“I should go. It was nice meeting you Chase.”
“You too. Quit hiding, I’d love to hang out.” He walked off.
Wow, had I really made my first friend here?
