After Lindsay Windson joined the Jefferson family, her freedom to leave at will was gone. Before fully transitioning into her new life, there were unresolved matters to address, so she requested a few days off from the Jefferson family.
The Dream Restaurant.
Lindsay had asked Chris to meet her here for a meal.
When Chris arrived, he found Lindsay already seated. As he sat down, curiosity got the better of him.
“Lindsay, why are you staying with the Jefferson family?” Chris asked. “You’re already the top star in Amerosia. Even without them, you could live a great life.”
Lindsay sighed softly. “I don’t want to stay with the Jefferson family either. But my staying there is beneficial for both the Windson and Jefferson families. Today, I’ve asked you here to resign.”
With those words, Lindsay handed Chris a resignation letter.
Technically, Lindsay was still under Chris’s employment. But now that she was joining the Jefferson family, continuing her work at Star Entertainment was no longer an option.
Chris took the letter, his expression complicated.
“The Jefferson family is a dangerous place,” he said with a sigh. “I’m worried about you being there alone.”
Lindsay smiled faintly. “Mr. Shelby, you don’t need to worry. My single-attribute Soulseed makes me highly valued in the Jefferson family. No one would dare harm me.”
Chris couldn’t find the words to respond. Lindsay was a friend, and the thought of her being in danger unsettled him. Moreover, once she joined the Jefferson family, their chances of meeting again would be slim.
Suddenly, Lindsay’s phone rang.
After answering, she frowned slightly and hung up.
“Mr. Shelby,” she said, “someone from the Jefferson family is coming here. He’s been assigned to protect me and escort me back.”
Chris understood immediately. This person was likely sent not just for protection but also to monitor Lindsay, ensuring she didn’t attempt to escape. After all, for the Jefferson family, a single-attribute Soulseed Aetherbinding practitioner was immensely valuable.
It wasn’t long before a young man entered the restaurant.
He smiled and casually greeted Lindsay. “Lindsay, I didn’t expect to find you here. By the way, Master Moonstone just asked about when you’ll be returning to the Jefferson family.”
Lindsay’s expression turned uneasy. “Jackey, I’ll likely head back this afternoon.”
Chris studied Jackey. He was handsome, but his arrogant demeanor was impossible to miss-he carried himself as if the world revolved around him.
Jackey’s gaze fell on Chris, and his expression darkened.
As Rafael Jefferson’s grandson, Jackey held a prominent position in the Jefferson family. Ever since discovering Lindsay’s rare Soulseed attribute, he’d become infatuated with her. Not only was she gifted, but she was also stunningly beautiful.
Seeing her dining with another man ignited a surge of jealousy in Jackey.
With a cold sneer, Jackey said, “Lindsay, you’re now part of the Jefferson family. Your future as a high-ranking Aetherbinding practitioner means you shouldn’t associate with commoners.”
Lindsay’s face darkened. “Jackey, Chris is my friend and my former employer.”
Chris, however, couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge Jackey. His experiences with the Jefferson family had already revealed the kind of arrogance typical of Aetherbinding practitioners.
Turning to Lindsay, Chris said, “Take care of yourself with the Jefferson family. If I get the chance, I’ll visit.”
Jackey burst into mocking laughter. “You? Visit the Jefferson family? Do you even know who you are? Chris, the entire Jefferson family knows about you-a useless Soulseed. A nobody like you has no place stepping into the Jefferson family. Ridiculous!”
As Rafael Jefferson’s grandson, Jackey was well-informed about Chris’s reputation as a “useless Soulseed.” To him, Chris was no better than trash.
Ignoring Jackey’s taunts, Lindsay nodded at Chris. “I’ll wait for you, Mr. Shelby.”
Their indifference enraged Jackey.
How dare they ignore him? As Rafael Jefferson’s grandson and a standout among the Jefferson family’s younger generation, Jackey was used to being treated with reverence. To be disregarded by a “useless” man like Chris was intolerable.
“Chris,” Jackey snarled, “you’ve offended Alexandre Leite and Elias Dorneles of the Flower Clan. If it weren’t for the Jefferson family protecting you, you’d already be dead!”
Chris had endured enough.
Coldly, he met Jackey’s glare. “Whether I’m useless or not is none of your business. Don’t think you can act however you please just because you’re from the Jefferson family. This is the East Coast-my territory. Don’t make me prove to you that you won’t leave here alive.”
“You…” Jackey’s fury boiled over.
As Rafael Jefferson’s grandson and a skilled Aetherbinding practitioner, Jackey wasn’t accustomed to such defiance. Chris, a so-called “waste,” dared to threaten him? It was unthinkable.
“Chris,” Jackey roared, “you’re asking to die! How dare you threaten me? I’ll end you today!”
Jackey lunged forward, throwing a punch with immense power. If his blow landed, it would be fatal for an ordinary person.
Chris’s expression turned grim. Without hesitation, he clenched his fist and met Jackey’s attack head-on.
Boom!
The impact was deafening. Both men staggered back a few steps.
Jackey’s face was filled with shock as he looked at Chris. He was an Aetherbinding practitioner, yet Chris had managed to block his punch.
At the same time, Chris coughed up blood.
Jackey’s strength was formidable, though not as overwhelming as that of Alexandre Leite or Elias Dorneles. Still, it was enough to injure Chris. Clearly, Aetherbinding practitioners were not to be underestimated.
Chris glared at Jackey, his tone icy. “You might think I’m useless, but killing me won’t be as easy as you believe.”
With that, Chris drew the Dragon Slayer sword.
Without hesitation, he charged at Jackey, putting all his strength into a devastating strike.
