“Hah!” Chris asked with a faint, mocking smile, “What’s wrong? Is this wine undrinkable?”
Hearing this, Emily stood up suddenly, her voice sharp with anger. “What nonsense are you spouting? Get out of here right now! You’re not welcome here!”
Chris smirked coldly as he watched Emily’s outburst. Without another word, he grabbed the wine bottle and hurled it to the ground.
Bang!
The bottle shattered with a loud crash, spilling its contents and releasing a steady stream of white bubbles.
“Emily, you dared to poison me…”
Lindsay Windson’s face turned pale with shock at the sight.
Even if she had been slow to realize it before, Lindsay now understood. The wine had been poisoned. If Chris hadn’t intervened, she would have drunk it, and the consequences would have been unthinkable.
“Hahaha!”
With her plot exposed, Emily let out a wild, maniacal laugh. “That’s right! I poisoned the wine! Lindsay Windson, I’ve wanted to kill you for so long! Last time, I arranged for someone to run you down with a car, but that damn man saved you. This time, I tried poison, and still, he ruined everything!”
Emily’s eyes burned with hatred. Twice now, Chris had thwarted her plans.
Lindsay Windson’s expression was one of utter disbelief.
“Emily,” she said painfully, “no matter how much we’ve fought, we’re still cousins! I can’t believe you’d go so far as to try to kill me…”
“Shut up!”
Before Lindsay could finish, Emily exploded in rage. “Don’t flatter yourself, Lindsay Windson! Who’s your cousin? Since we were kids, you’ve always been prettier than me, always the one Grandpa adored. In the Wind family, everyone notices you-no one ever sees me, Emily! The only way to make Grandpa notice me is to get rid of you! Then the entire Wind family will be mine!”
Lindsay fell silent, her heart heavy with despair. She never imagined Emily’s hatred ran this deep-so deep she would disregard family ties and seek her life.
“Today, Lindsay Windson, I will kill you!”
With a furious cry, Emily pulled a sharp dagger from her pocket and lunged at Lindsay.
Lindsay froze in shock. She hadn’t expected Emily to be so ruthless. Failing to poison her, Emily now intended to stab her.
Paralyzed with fear, Lindsay stood rooted to the spot, unable to react.
Just as the blade was about to strike, a hand caught Emily’s wrist mid-swing.
“Let me go!”
Emily turned to see Chris, her voice shrill with fury.
Chris sneered. “Did you really think I’d just stand here and watch you kill Lindsay Windson? Did you even consider my opinion?”
With a sharp twist, Chris snapped Emily’s wrist.
Crack!
Emily cried out in agony, the dagger slipping from her grasp and clattering to the ground.
“You bastard!” she screamed at Chris, her face twisted in rage. “How dare you lay a hand on me? Do you know who I am? I’m her cousin! If you hurt me, you won’t leave the Wind family alive!”
“Is that so?” Chris replied disdainfully. “You think someone like you can stop me? You overestimate yourself.”
Turning to Lindsay, Chris asked, “What do you want to do with her?”
Lindsay looked at Emily with a mix of pain and coldness. “Emily, I knew you hated me, but I never thought you’d try to kill me. You’ve truly disappointed me.”
“Hahaha!”
Emily laughed uncontrollably, her face contorted with madness. “Lindsay Windson, stop pretending to be the good one! I’ve always wanted you dead. Once you’re gone, everything in the Wind family will be mine!”
Lindsay’s face filled with desolation. A deep sadness gripped her heart.
So this was what family meant in the world of the wealthy? A bond where even siblings would turn against each other for the sake of power and wealth.
Years ago, Lindsay had left the Wind family to avoid such bloodshed. But now, it seemed her hopes had been naive.
Chris’s voice cut through her thoughts, cold and unyielding. “A woman as venomous as you, Emily, deserves nothing less than death.”
“It’s all because of you!” Emily shrieked. “If not for you, I would’ve killed Lindsay Windson by now! You ruined everything, you bastard! I’ll kill you!”
Like a madwoman, Emily lunged at Chris, her nails clawing at the air.
Chris snorted in contempt and kicked her hard.
Bang!
Emily flew backward, hitting the ground with a heavy thud.
Chris glanced at her with icy disdain. Emily was no match for him. She was just a woman-weak and powerless.
His eyes glinted with murderous intent. A woman as cruel and poisonous as Emily was better off dead. Letting her live would only bring more harm to the world.
Chris took a step forward, ready to finish it.
But Lindsay quickly stepped in front of him. “Mr. Shelby, please, stop! She’s still my cousin. If you kill her, it would devastate my grandfather.”
Chris paused, his gaze heavy on Lindsay. “Are you sure about this? If you don’t deal with her now, she’ll never stop coming after you.”
Lindsay shook her head, her expression filled with pain. “I don’t want to spare her, but Grandpa’s health is poor. If something happens to her, it might be too much for him to bear.”
Chris hesitated. This was, after all, a matter within the Wind family. Since Lindsay had made her choice, he saw no reason to interfere further.
To him, Emily was nothing more than an insect-too insignificant to care about. If she dared cross him again, he wouldn’t hesitate to crush her.
Lindsay looked down at Emily, her face cold and emotionless. “Emily, I’ll spare you today for Grandpa’s sake. But from this moment on, there’s nothing left between us. You and I are no longer sisters.”
With that, Lindsay and Chris turned and left.
Lying on the ground, Emily’s face twisted with hatred. “Chris, Lindsay Windson… Do you think I’ll be grateful for this? Dream on! I swear, I’ll kill you both one day!”
For the next few days, the Wind family remained eerily calm.
Then, one day, Emily-her injuries healed-confronted Chris once more.
Her face was cold, her voice sharp. “Chris, how long do you plan to stay in the Wind family?”
