Chapter 2438: Knowing the Truth

Soon, the three of them met in a relatively quiet cafe. Jane was not alone; she brought two subordinates with her just in case. Despite her elegant and gentle demeanor, Jane exuded an air of authority. She sat gracefully in a wooden chair, her long dress flowing around her, her face calm.
Opposite her sat the couple who were clearly nervous, their expressions somewhat evasive. A pot of tea was placed in front of them, and the waiter had just poured each of them a cup, the faint aroma of tea lingering in the air. Jane’s subordinates stood guard outside, ensuring no one felt pressured by their presence.
“Are you Agnes’s parents? Why did you appear at the engagement party?” Jane asked softly, without a hint of blame in her tone. “If we have an honest conversation, the Fritz family will not hold you accountable. Otherwise, this could involve legal issues.”
“We are not,” the man began, unwilling to take responsibility and thus confessed everything that had happened that day. Jane watched him carefully, analyzing his micro-expressions to discern the truth in his words.
He seemed to be telling the truth, which surprised Jane. “Pretending to be parents?”
“Yes, Miss Campbell knew about this, and so did your son,” the man admitted. “We didn’t take anything from the Fritz family. The betrothal gifts were all returned to Miss Campbell. Mr. Fritz is aware of this too. The only thing we received was the payment from Miss Campbell.”
How could Jane accept this? The Fritz family had happily organized an engagement party, inviting friends and family to witness it, only to find out that even the bride’s parents were fake? If this got out… The Fritz family would lose face and become headline news, which would also impact the company.
“Alright, I understand,” Jane said without pressing further. “Thank you for coming. Please continue to keep this matter confidential and act as if it is true.”
The man and woman exchanged glances. Not holding them accountable?
“It’s fine, you can leave now,” Jane said with a gentle smile. “But if it gets out that you were fake parents, I will hold you responsible.”
Grateful yet fearful of her changing her mind, they quickly bowed and left.
Jane sat alone drinking her tea, her beautiful brows furrowed slightly as she pondered. She checked her phone for the time; she was waiting… When it was almost time, she got up and left.
Sitting in the luxury car, she told her bodyguard and driver, “To Marsh Group.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
In a dimly lit office at Marsh Group, Agnes had just finished her work and was tidying up her desk to leave for the day. Her spirits were relatively high today; she had managed not to contact Mr. Cat for some time now. Perhaps if she held on a little longer, she could let go of this feeling that he was irreplaceable.
Sometimes she wondered if it was due to her lack of experience that made her heart so easily swayed? This too could be considered a form of growth.
She remained grateful for every encounter in her life.
As Agnes walked out of the company building and took a few steps outside, she saw a familiar figure standing by a car not far away-Aunt Jane.
Unlike the first time Aunt Jane waited for her at the company entrance with joy on her face, there was no smile today; instead, there was a hint of gravity in her eyes but definitely not anger.
Agnes looked at her and gathered her courage to steady herself before walking towards Aunt Jane because she knew very well that Aunt Jane had come to see her.
