Myrna knew what she meant, smiled slightly, and didn’t argue much.
Vita : “I remember that you studied undergraduate at University B ? Which school do you plan to apply to this time?”
Myrna : ?? It?? s still University B. ??
“Master of Science or Master of Professional Studies?”
“Master of Science.”
“What major?”
“biology.”
Vita raised her eyebrows. It turned out to be the same major as hers. “Are there any interested mentors?”
Myrna didn’t hide it and nodded: “Yes. Professor Thoreau .”
“Who? Sarah ?”
“Um.”
Vita recalled the last time she saw Myrna working as a part-time worker at Professor Thoreau’s house . She looked a little strange: “You… don’t think that if I go to the professor’s house and help with the cleaning, she will agree to it, right?”
Well!
Myrna : ???? it was a misunderstanding last time.??
“Misunderstanding? To tell you the truth, Professor Thoreau is a top scholar in the field of biology and is famous for her strictness. In addition, she has accepted many doctoral students in recent years and rarely teaches master’s students. There are very few places, so…”
Vita paused and said, “It’s very difficult to become her student. To be honest, I am also applying for her graduate program this year. You may think I am selfish, but I still want to advise you to change your target supervisor while it is still not too late. There is still some time before the results come out, so you can contact other professors.”
Vita felt that she had said so much and that she had said all she could say.
“Thank you.” Myrna nodded slightly, “I’ll go first.”
After saying that, he walked away.
Vita : ????? That?? s it? That?? s all?
??
They caught the 5 o’clock subway, and the warm air flowed from the vents, and Myrna’s almost frozen fingers finally warmed up a little.
The phone rang twice in her bag. She took off her gloves and saw the number on the screen. She raised her lips and said in a lighter voice, “Hello, Professor.”
“How is it? How do you feel?” Professor Thoreau ‘s voice was as gentle and optimistic as always. He did not put any pressure on her, as if he was just saying it casually.
“Well… I did everything I could,” she answered truthfully.
“That’s good. I’ve never been too worried about your exams.” The professor smiled. Myrna got almost full marks in her professional courses when she was in college, and she was also very good at basic subjects.
“It’s so cold, have you gone home? Don’t freeze outside.”
“I’m on the subway now. I heard your legs are starting to hurt again? I bought some medicine and will send it to you after the exam.”
Sarah injured her leg when she was young, and her legs would hurt badly in winter, especially when it rained.
I had acupuncture two years ago and it got better, but I didn?? t expect it to come back again this year.
“Okay, I’ll be home these days.”
Professor Thoreau looked at the calendar and saw that the day after tomorrow was Saturday, so he could come over to his house for dinner.
Myrna looked up and saw that they were almost at the station.
After hanging up the phone, she walked through the crowded crowd at rush hour and took the second exit.
As soon as she got out of the station, a cold wind blew towards her, and she was almost blown off her feet.
At this moment, a hand was firmly placed behind her, and then a dark shadow covered her. She looked up and saw Dempsey , and raised her mouth in surprise: “Why are you here?”
“I just happened to go home to get some information. The road was slippery and it was not easy to drive, so I took the subway.” Dempsey straightened her up.
The two chatted as they walked.
“How did you do on the test?”
Myrna : ?? It went pretty well.??
Dempsey smiled faintly and said nothing more.
It gets dark early in winter. Before seven o’clock, the rows of street lights on both sides of the road light up, adding a touch of warmth to the cold and lonely night.
There is a commercial street from the subway station to B University , with various stalls selling all kinds of things.
Myrna was crossing the bridge, she heard a stall selling sweet potatoes not far away. She blinked her eyes which were a little hurt by the wind and turned to Dempsey : “Wait for me here for a while.”
Dempsey stood there, and two minutes later, she came back with two hot sweet potatoes.
“Give.”
The hot sweet potato was still steaming when she broke it open. It tasted sweet, but a little hot on her teeth. She blew on it in her hand, then tentatively took a little bite. After tasting the sweetness, she instantly broke into a smile.
Myrna turned around and asked him, “Is yours sweet?”
Dempsey nodded. It was the first time he had tasted such sweet potatoes.
Myrna was suddenly a little proud: “Yeah, I’m lucky, I can always pick the sweetest one.”
Dempsey was infected by her smile, moved the corners of his lips, and a slight smile appeared in his eyes.
It was already seven o’clock when they got home.
As soon as she opened the door, the temperature from the floor heating made her feel warm all over. Myrna took the books and pens she had brought back to the study.
There were several books spread out on the table. She put them away one by one and put them on the bookshelf. She found that one of them seemed to be the professional book that Dempsey had lent her last week.
She took the book and knocked on the next door.
Dempsey was used to taking a shower as soon as he got home. He had just come out of the bathroom with wet hair when he heard a knock on the door and went to open it.
“This is the original German version you lent me last week. I forgot to return it to you.”
The faint scent of mint filled Myrna’s nose, and her heart inexplicably tightened.
Dempsey raised his hand to take it and found a note on it. He was very familiar with her handwriting. There was also a Q-version man drawn in the lower left corner, wearing a headband and with a positive and optimistic expression.
Myrna saw the smile on his face and also found the bookmarks she had left behind. She hurriedly tore them off and said, “Well, these are just for fun when I have nothing to do.”
Seeing the smile in his eyes deepen, she changed the subject: “By the way, do you have time recently? After the exam, I want to treat you to a meal. Thank you for helping me all this time.”
Regarding the postgraduate entrance examination and what happened in the villa before, it has been so long and she has never had the chance to formally thank him.
Dempsey didn’t refuse, but suggested: “How about at home? I still prefer your cooking.”
Myrna laughed and said, “Then tomorrow? After the exam this afternoon, I’ll go buy some groceries. When you come back from the lab, we can eat right away.”
“good.”
The rain stopped the next day. After Myrna finished her professional exam, she found that she could see a few rays of sunshine behind the large dark clouds in the sky.
She went to the supermarket to buy groceries first, and then took a taxi home.
At six o’clock, there was a knock on the door.
Myrna opened the door, Dempsey put on the pair of men’s slippers that Myrna had specially prepared for him, and went to the kitchen to help as if he knew the place well.
Myrna also tacitly put the dishes to be washed in his hands: “Here, the old rules, I leave it to you.”
He turned around and started cutting vegetables.
Dempsey looked at her back, with a subtle arc at the corner of his mouth: “Okay.”
He suddenly realized that although he had never experienced such a life, it was… inexplicably interesting.
