“I should at least formally apologize for my impulsive and irrational behavior back then. I owe her this.”
Joanna almost choked on her drink. She coughed twice, her face full of rejection: “Please forgive me, sister.”
“You know, the only time I failed a make-up exam in college was in Professor Thoreau ‘s elective course. I get scared whenever I see her. Besides, a nobody like me might even forget who I am. I really can’t help you.”
Seeing that she was avoiding him, Myrna did not force him.
“However.” Joanna looked sly and changed the subject, “I do have a suitable candidate.”
“Um?”
“You still remember my cousin, right?”
Myrna took a small sip of warm water and nodded.
“Of course I remember.”
Dempsey Gus, the youngest leader in the field of physics in the country, topped the list of the top ten young scientists who have an impact on the world selected by Nature magazine last year.
He studied applied biological sciences under Professor Thoreau as an undergraduate , and published five SCI papers in two years. The biological community had high hopes for him and hailed him as a genius.
Later, for some unknown reason, I suddenly had the idea of changing my major and went to study physics.
It caused quite a stir at the time.
Facts have proved that if a person is capable, he can do one thing at a time.
Dempsey is now a prominent figure in the international physics community.
Myrna and Dempsey are in the same school but different classes, so she can be considered his junior.
She had heard the legend about Dempsey when she first entered school, and later when she met Joanna she found out that Dempsey was her cousin.
In recent years, he worked in a physics research institute abroad and only returned to this country three months ago.
“My cousin asked about the professor’s condition a few days ago, but he never had time. It’s just perfect for you two to go together.”
Joanna talked, the more she felt it was appropriate, so she called Dempsey directly.
It rang twice, and then it was connected.
Myrna heard a deep voice coming, with a hint of coldness and seriousness: “What’s the matter?”
Joanna said a few simple words.
There was some noise in the background and he seemed very busy. He hung up the phone in less than a minute.
“Done! My brother wants you to meet at West Coast Restaurant at 2pm tomorrow afternoon to talk.”
Joanna shook her hand and said, “Just get some good sleep today and we’ll deal with the rest tomorrow.”
Myrna nodded: “Thank you, I understand.”
the next day.
Myrna left home half an hour early.
When she arrived at the restaurant, she looked at her watch and saw that it was two minutes to two o’clock.
Not too early, not too late, just right.
She pushed the door open and the waiter led her for a distance. When she looked up, she saw the man sitting by the window.
He tilted his head and drank his coffee with an indifferent expression.
He was wearing a simple white shirt and black trousers, with a pair of gold-rimmed glasses on his nose. The sunlight fell on the side of his face, like an independent oil painting.
Looking at myself, I am wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, a high ponytail, and no makeup. Ahem… it is indeed a bit too casual.
Feeling Myrna ‘s gaze, the man turned his head.
“Sit down, what would you like to drink?”
The magnetic voice with a slight numbness penetrated into her ears. Myrna came back to her senses and pulled out a chair to sit down opposite him.
“Sorry to have kept you waiting.”
The girl’s obsidian pupils were filled with a hint of apology.
Dempsey pushed up his glasses and said calmly, “It’s not that long. I’m only five minutes early. The lab still has a few more sets of data to come out, so I can only give you thirty minutes today. Is that enough?”
“That’s enough.”
The waiter came over and Myrna asked for a glass of lemonade.
Dempsey got straight to the point: “Go see Professor Thoreau , what do you want me to do?”
Unexpectedly straightforward.
Myrna liked this no-nonsense attitude and slowly stated her purpose: ” Professor Thoreau has been discharged from the hospital. I don’t know her exact address now, so I hope you can take me to visit her, if possible…”
Her eyes flickered. “When the professor gets angry, you help to calm him down. “Well, anger is harmful to the body.
Hearing this, the man seemed to slightly curl his lips.
Myrna continued: “I know you are busy, so you decide the time.”
Dempsey nodded: “Okay, then two days later.”
Myrna thanked him.
She held the lemonade in her hand and suddenly asked, “Why… are you willing to help me?”
Dempsey looked at her with his dark eyes for a while. Just when Myrna thought he would not answer, the man spoke: “Because you are Myrna .”
“?”
” Professor Thoreau once said,” the man took a sip of coffee and spoke slowly, “So far, she has three regrets in her life. One is that her scientific research is vast but her life is too short, the second is that she has no children, and the third is – Myrna .”
Myrna froze, her fingertips digging into her palms.
Dempsey looked at her sharply, a hint of deep inquiry and scrutiny flashed in his eyes, but soon returned to silence.
This was the first time he saw Myrna , but not the first time he heard the name.
What is so special about this girl that Professor Thoreau calls it a “regret” and puts her on a par with life, scientific research, and family?
Myrna’s throat was dry and she lowered her eyes slightly.
She could even imagine the disappointed and regretful look in the teacher’s eyes when he mentioned her.
Dempsey took out a piece of paper and wrote down a string of numbers.
“This is my cell phone number.”
Myrna took a look and saw beautiful regular script.
“Here’s the tiramisu you requested.”
As the waiter put down the food, he couldn’t help but secretly look at the guests at the table in front of him.
There was a hint of indifference on the man’s handsome face, and a hint of impatience in his eyes.
The woman opposite was wearing a little red Dior couture dress and carrying a white Herm’s milkshake bag. You could tell at first glance that she was a daughter of a wealthy family.
She seemed to be completely unaware of the man’s annoyance, and kept talking with her little mouth –
” Ansel , I heard from your aunt that your stomach is not in good condition. We have a doctor who specializes in treating stomach problems. When the time comes…”
Ansel played with his lighter and occasionally responded.
Today’s blind date was arranged by Ms. Selena , and since he was here, he didn’t intend to make things too awkward.
But he had no interest in what the woman said.
His eyes drifted to a place not far away, and suddenly his sight paused, and he sat up straight abruptly.
Four or five seats away, Myrna sat opposite a man.
He couldn’t hear the conversation, but he could see the faint smile on her face.
The sound in his ears, which he could barely tolerate before, suddenly became louder, which made him even more irritated.
Ansel sneered and looked away.
“I have to go now.”
Dempsey ‘s schedule is very tight and thirty minutes is the limit he can spare.
Myrna expressed her understanding, and they both stood up.
When leaving the restaurant, Dempsey stepped forward first and put his hand against the door, motioning her to go first.
Very gentleman.
Myrna smiled and said, “Thank you.”
The two came to the side of the road, and Dempsey said : “My car is here.”
Myrna nodded: “See you the day after tomorrow.”
Standing there and watching him leave, Myrna finally looked away. The moment she turned around, she was suddenly met with a pair of eyes that seemed to be smiling but not smiling.
Full of familiar ridicule and coldness.
“You left me and found the next man so soon ?”
