It was Ethan’s and April’s wedding week.
The news of their union was the most talked about on every media channel. Everyone raved about the prestigious event as they gingerly prepared to throw the biggest wedding the City has ever seen.
Lucy was also burying her father. After one week of grieving, she decided to lay the old man to rest in a small gathering. June was there to support her, as well as other family members.
Together, they witnessed the laying to rest of her father and tears were shed. The atmosphere was gloomy and soon, the people trickled out of the grave site. Ready to return to life as they knew it.
April had also found out about the ceremony. Ever since the last time she met with Lucy, she had kept track of her movements, hoping to find out where June lived and what she was up to.
However, due to the fact Lucy was working remotely as she mourned the passing of her father, there hadn’t been much to report until it was time for the burial.
April sat in a tinted car with Ethan, waiting for the right time to make an appearance. When the people trickled out and she sighted June sitting by Lucy who sat with a blank look on her face, she decided it was time to strike.
Ethan was not in agreement. “I don’t think we should show our face. She is mourning and could easily misunderstand our appearance.”
He persisted when she opened the door of the car. “Your sister too would not make things easy for us. We don’t need another scandal on our wedding week. Please reconsider.”
“If she came to disrupt our occasion, why can’t we return the favour?” April said excitedly, “Besides, Lucy was one of our staff. It doesn’t have to be hostile. We just came to pay our condolences and invite my dear sister to the wedding.”
“This time, we would be ready to receive her instead of having her show up with underhanded means.” April stepped out of the car. “Get out, we don’t have all day.”
June was replying to messages on her phone when Lucy suddenly stood up from her seat. “How dare you show your face here?” She seethed, boiling with rage.
April wore a smile that seemed to irritate her further. “I heard you lost your father. I came to share my condolence with you. It’s a pity he died.”
Although April spoke softly, her insensitivity was clear in her words. June got up and faced them with anger. “You have no shame.” A scoff. “You dare to show up here after what you did?”
“Believe it or not, Lucy was part of the Lontoc family. It’s a pity she betrayed us to work for the silly thing you have set up but we do not abandon our own in times of hardship.” She turned to Lucy. “I warned you not to turn your back on me.”
“Is that why you killed him? Because I refused to sell information to you? Is that why you killed my father?!” Lucy screamed her head off, anger coursing through her veins.
“Be careful with your words, woman.” Ethan said when he noticed they were stirring up attention, “Do not speak carelessly.”
“Let her be, hunny.” April said, hooking an arm around her husband-to-be, “She just lost a father. It’s normal for her to be out of it.”
“My offer still stands. I know you are in debt and hurting. Working as a meagre assistant to a failure is not your best bet.” She handed over a complimentary card which Lucy refused to take and it ended up on the floor. “I will be willing to have you return to your position at the company. Just give me a call and we can discuss details.”
“Get out of here.” June couldn’t stand the sight of them. “Get out this instant or I will make you regret it.”
“Oh yeah! I almost forgot my sister!” April clasped her hands with a smile. “Did you hear we are getting married this weekend? I bet you are looking for ways to sneak into the wedding like you did at the party and cause a ruckus.”
April’s tone was sharp and cutting. So much so that Ethan gently pulled her arm, hoping to get her to be nicer. However, April was past caring. She was done putting up a font and all that remained was the blatant hate in her heart for this sister who refused to drop dead.
“I see you have quit the acting industry. Congratulations. Evil has always looked good on you.” June said with a smile of her own. “If you are done displaying your foolishness, I suggest you leave this place before I call my security.”
A scoff, “You don’t say, sister. Who? Thomas? Let me guess, your brother? Or your husband?” June corked her brows in confusion and April took it to mean she was spot on her suspicions.
“Since the last time, I wondered, who was this man you were so confident about? Who was pushing this silly dream of yours? Then I looked into it and found there was only one man in the picture.”
As though he was conjured, Thomas made his way to the scene, checking in on June with his eyes.
“Oh, here he is! The man of the hour!” April snickered, “Don’t be shy now, come, come.” She turned to June, “Even if he is the bodyguard of the most powerful man on earth, and is paid in the millions monthly, he is still a guard.”
She latched her arms on Ethan, “While I get married to the love of my life, and achieve all my dreams, you will be beneath me, struggling to get on your feet with a sorry excuse of a man that would soon desert you.”
Thomas made to step in but June raised her hand. “Is this it? You find one little information about me and you came up here to rub it on my face?” Tut, tut, “A shame that you have nothing better to do but prance around with a cheat.”
“You are just angry that he divorced you and I am the better wife and mother you will never be.” April flung the invite to her wedding on her face. “There you go. It’s a front-row seat. At least this time you don’t have to struggle to attend, and there will be bountiful clients you can attempt to poach for your small failure of a business.”
“You can also drop the high and mighty act. Be courteous to your husband and stop being ashamed of him. You should show him off to the world and not pose him to be a security.”
April ended her words with a mocking laugh, then said to Ethan. “I think our job is done here. ”
June remained silent, offering a supportive shoulder to Lucy who was still fragile and shaking with anger. “Don’t you worry, I will get back at them.”
Ethan felt stuck. He wanted to sorely apologize for his wife’s misbehaviour but he knew better than to cross April. His family was still suffering from the effects of angering her the last time.
His father’s condition has continued to worsen without professional help and he was still unable to revoke her orders no matter how hard he begged, the couple returned to the car and drove off with April pleased with the turnout of things.
