June was seated across from Carson in a restaurant.
“I need everything you have on this case,” June said, “Every single footage from my stay at the hospital until the very moment I was out of there.”
Carson shrugged. “So far, we don’t have the video from the day you were attacked, but I could arrange for a copy of your stay throughout the days you were unconscious.”
“Thank you.” June wore a serious impression. “If my sister knew I was alive, she wouldn’t sit still. Judging from the shock on her face, it was clear she thought me dead, which begs the question of why?”
“Why would my sister find it difficult to believe I survived, Doctor?” June’s tone was rhetoric, “Because she made sure I was dead. Or at least paid someone to finish the job.”
“Which means in the time you were fighting for your life, she would have tried-” Carson’s eyes widened. “That is just wicked. I will definitely go through the videos and get it through to you when they are ready.”
June nodded, “Thank you. I’d appreciate if you kept this between us, the last thing I need is for someone to get wind of this and share it to my enemies.”
“I understand.”
June stood up, “Thank you, Carson. I owe you.”
He stood up too, “I will do all I can to make sure you have justice.” A small smile, “Your husband will have my head if it is otherwise.”
Soon enough, June left the place with Thomas on tow, It was past noon and they were headed home. When they arrived, the house was quiet, no doubt, her little prince was taking classes.
June made her way into the house, pushing the front door open, only to be met with the furious eyes of the stranger from last night. Her brows perked in surprise. She was supposed to be gone by daylight.
Why was she still here?
“Where are you coming from?” The woman’s tone was low and threatening. “Why the hell did you come in with Rafael’s car?”
“I do not answer to you,” June answered in an even tone, making to leave when the woman dragged her by the hair backwards.
“How dare you?! How dare you speak to me in that manner, you slave!” Marie roared, tightening her hold on June’s hair, almost pulling out strands with it.
June winced as an inflood of pain filled her. She tried getting out of the crazy woman’s hold all to no avail. “Let me go!” She roared in frustration, pushing Marie away.
Both women fell on their butts, across from each other.
“Are you sleeping with him? Huh? Are you sleeping with Rafael?!” She asked, “Have you taken advantage of that little mutt and warmed your way into his bed?!”
“I will not answer your ridiculous questions. I made myself clear yesterday.” June got on her feet. “The next time you try such nonsense, I will not hesitate to fight back. Rafael’s guest or not.”
June walked away from the situation with anger in her heart. The last thing she needed was some senseless and entitled bimbo making her life miserable. She was going to have a word with her husband when he returned.
Taking the highway upstairs, she made her way first to Luis’s room, and sure enough, he was taking his lessons, however, he noticed her open the door and she felt joy when his face brightened upon seeing her.
In order not to distract him, she closed the door slowly and made her way to her room, only to find that a new lock had been installed. Her brows furrowed at the sight of it.
“Maids are not meant to sleep in rooms, talk less of one this close to their master’s bedroom.” The scratchy voice of Marie flooded the air. “Your room will be downstairs, Close to the toilet. Where you belong.”
June was this close to losing her patience. She bit her lips and turned around with disdain clear in her voice. “Did you lock my room?”
“Are you deaf?” Marie scoffed, “Do you know who I am? Do you think you have the right to exchange words with me in this house? I am the future Mrs. Ambrose! Rafael’s future wife! How dare you act so arrogant before me?!”
June almost laughed at her declarations. The next Mrs. Ambrose? That had to be the silliest thing she’s heard all day. This woman was deluding herself.
“I don’t care if you are the future president’s wife.” She replied in a flippant tone. “Give me the key.”
“Why would I give my room key to a slave who does not know her place?” Marie mused, turned around and walked away, swaying her hips and twirling some keys on her finger.
June felt anger as she watched her leave. She remained rooted to her spot. Staring at the door, and contemplating breaking and entering. However, she choose the high way.
It was only a matter of time before Luis closed from his schooling. She could wait it out somewhere else until Rafael returned to clean up his mess. She couldn’t even work as her materials were all inside the room.
Later that afternoon, June received a call from Carson.
“Hello?”
“You were right. We caught on to something. I don’t know if it is going to lead somewhere but I have a gut instinct. I just sent you a video, have a look at it and tell me what you think.”
June hmmed in response, feeling adrenaline course through her blood as she opened the mail and downloaded the video. It was a long one so it took some minutes to complete.
Just when she wanted to watch the video, she heard footsteps from the stairs. Luis was done with his classes. He had a look she couldn’t decipher on his face.
“Auntie, why is your room locked?” The little one asked as soon as he got to her.
June scratched her head, in search of an answer. “Is it locked?” She feigned shock, “I didn’t realise.”
“Did you go out, Auntie?”
She shook her head no.
The little one pursed his lips. “Did Father lock you out of the room?”
Her eyes widened. “Of course not!”
Now he seemed confused.
“Luis! Sweet boy! How were your classes?” Marie stepped into the living room, plopping beside Luis.
“Why are you still here, missus?” He asked in a cold tone. “Leave my house. I don’t want you here.”
Marie felt embarrassed and angry at the child’s rudeness. However, she swallowed it in. “Oh dear, I know you are not used to me, but I promise this auntie-”
Luis got on his feet. “Why are you still here? Leave this house!” His tone was angry and defying.
“Child-”
Having had enough, Luis held Marie on the wrist, pushing her towards the door, while she tried to reason with him. June couldn’t help the laugh that escaped her at her little one’s antics.
Marie looked like a big butt being dragged out by someone half her size. It was hilarious as much as it was hilarious! On getting to the door, Luis let go of her for a moment, opened the door and dragged her out with him.
The young woman who was trying her best not to get on the little one’s bad side wore a fake smile as she said. “Luis dear, you shouldn’t treat elders like this.”
When they were a safe distance from the door, he let go of her hand and dusted his hands like she was dirt, walked back into the house and before she could turn around, shut the door in her face, and yelled the words, “Get out and stay out!”
