June stood in front of her hospital door room, contemplating the excuse to give the men who were stationed in her room.
It’s been two days since she woke up and she felt a lot better than the former days. Enough so that she wanted to leave the hospital and get on with her life.
However, the doctors didn’t agree with her and felt the need to keep her until the three-day mark. Which prompted her decision to leave without their knowledge.
The only thing standing between her and that decision to walk out of the hospital was the human barriers standing in front of her door.
One would think she was an important personality with the details that never left her door, attending to her like she was some sort of money god.
Although the treatment made her feel important, she had other things to get back to. She needed to get started on her life and pay her mother a visit.
Armed with a plan, June opened the door and the men turned to her with expectant looks. Prepared for their prying eyes, she cleared her throat and addressed them.
“I need something.”
One of the suited security men nodded, asking her what she needed in a respectful way.
“Locally made roasted beef.” She blurted, trying her best to give nothing of her plans.
The men shared a look before one of them spoke. “Do you think you should be eating such meals in your current predicament?”
June let her jaw drop in a dramatic attempt at shock, “Are you calling me fat?” She said in an accusing tone.
The men shook their heads at her allegation, one of them speaking up. “My colleague is worried that it might not be the healthiest meal to get in your present condition.”
June walked out of the hospital room. “If you are not getting me what I need, then I will get them myself!” She snapped, walking forward, only to be blocked by one of the security men who looked like he swallowed a knife.
“I will go get you the roasted beef. Please wait patiently in your room.” He said with a bow, before heading forward to make do with his words.
June hid her smile and maintained a serious look as she was guided back to the hospital room by the second security detail. By the time she closed the door, she let a smile boom on her face.
She knew it would take a while before the other one found a place to get her order. Most of the men who created those types of food were found in the rural areas of South City.
A far distance from the City hospital she was currently getting treated. The only thing she needed was to find a way to get the other man away for some time, giving her room to escape from the darn place.
June waited a total of ten minutes before she kickstarted her second mission. Once again, she stepped out of the room, holding her head and having a fainting expression on her face.
“My head is suddenly stinging. Could you please get me the doctor?” She said in a distressed tone, almost falling off her feet.
Shocked to the core, the security swooped into action, helping her back to the bed before dashing out in search of the doctor’s attention.
June counted to five on the bed, before getting up on her feet. With the speed of lightning, she got up and got dressed in the same clothes she had been in on the day of her accident.
Thankfully, it had been dry-cleaned and neatly folded, waiting for the day she was going to leave, which would undoubtedly be in the next few seconds.
Soon enough, June hit the roads, finding her way out of the busy City hospital and missing her security details by the hair.
Thankfully, no one noticed her slip out of the hospital and the moment she felt the cool breeze of the night sky on her skin, she took off in a sprint.
June journeyed to the heart of South City with nothing but the clothes she had on. No phones, no money, and nowhere to lay her head.
As she walked through the busy business centre of South City, she looked through all the businesses and establishments, looking for a job.
The nightlife was bustling in the city and she prayed she could find something that could help her earn a living and figure out her homeless situation.
Luck shone on her when she found a woman taking off an apron and screaming at an elderly woman in front of a high-end restaurant.
“Do you know who I am? How dare you ask me to clean tables?!” The young girl screeched at the elderly woman who stood like a statue, tight-lipped as rude remarks were hurled at her.
“If my father thinks he could humiliate me then he has something else coming! I will definitely show him that I am not one to be trifled with! You just wait.” The bratty lady kicked her apron to the curb with angry veins pulsating on her forehead.
Soon enough, she disappeared into the crowd after racking up an audience, to which the older woman picked the apron and made to leave without saying another word.
June who was desperately in need of a job saw past the drama and instinctively followed the woman into the restaurant. By now the crowd had dissipated with everyone finding something more interesting to vent their attention.
“Ma’am!” She called when security stopped her at the door.
This was a high-end restaurant and people dressed like her were not allowed in. Good thing she was desperate and had a pretty loud voice.
The woman turned around and caught sight of June who struggled against the security’s hold. “I want it! The job!” She managed to say before she was bundled up by the men who let her go at the older woman’s demands.
“Who are you?” The elderly woman who was dressed in a corporate dress asked, looking over her form.
“Just someone in need of a job, and a place to stay. Either one would be very appreciated.” June said, trying to regain her breath.
“We are not a charity.” The woman was cold and straight to the point. “Besides, we don’t accept just any kind of people to serve tables in our restaurant. What makes you think you are the one for the job.”
Unknown to June, she was talking to the direct owner of the chain of restaurants. One of South City’s high-end restaurants known for their best customer service and meals.
“For starters, I am quite respectful and nothing like the young lady who just quit.” That brought a tilt in the eye of the older lady who was suddenly more interested in the young woman before her.
June continued, desperate to nail this opportunity as she shamelessly marketed herself. “If you give me the job, you will never regret it! I am a master at working tirelessly and your business will soar to the tops with me on board!” She proclaimed, praying that her convictions were enough to grant her a job.
The woman took her in once again, contemplating her choices. Since the lady left in a quite dramatic and sudden way, they were short a few hands.
The night was still young and demanding. The last thing she wanted was to keep the customers waiting for too long due to a shortage of staff.
Although she was also quite picky with the staff that worked with her, the current situation had forced her hand.
“You mentioned you don’t have a place to stay. How would you manage to sustain the job if you don’t have a place to stay?” She asked with a corked eyebrow.
If she was going to take a chance at it, she wanted to know that there was a plan that detailed how the young woman was going to keep the job if granted. She didn’t want a quick fix. She wanted something long-term.
June felt short of words. The woman had a point with her questions. “I don’t have a job right now, but I intend to sort myself out in a while. And to do that, I need a job.” She opted for sincerity.
After a long hard look, she released a breath. “Give your details to the manager’s office. You will stay in the store room for the meantime until you get your accommodation. But for now, get to work.”
June couldn’t believe her ears. Her eyes shone in joy and it took every ounce of her strength to withhold herself from embracing the woman.
“Thank you! Thank you so much ma! I will not disappoint you!” June said with a broad smile and dashed into the place asking for the manager’s office.
