“My mom wanted you here, but I never did, so it is crazy that you are trying to force me to sleep with you,” Cael scoffed as they sat on the bed in the room. They had been so preoccupied with other things that it was the night of the wedding that they all realized that they did not have a house, so they went back to the mansion.
Charles had taunted them for their poor planning; Cael could not believe that his grandfather had not stepped up to do anything concerning the wedding even after he had leaked the secret to him. He was feeling overwhelmed by the situation and was now convinced that his grandfather was doing the right thing by not allowing him to be the next in line for succession. Even when he had leaked the secret of the wedding to Charles, he did not do anything about it.
Even this evening, when they got back to the house after the wedding, Charles was not shocked to see them back at the mansion; he just nodded his head at them and retired to his room. He did not know why he was acting like that, but he was supposed to at least get a reaction from his grandfather.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Frances asked, standing by the edge of the bed as Cael sat on the bed with the covers on his legs. “If you would become the next chairman, you should think about having a baby first.”
“I do not want to be the next chairman,” Cael murmured, lying down and pulling up the covers to his neck. Frances could not believe her ears; he had not said anything before trapping her in this marriage, and all of a sudden he was not interested in being the chairman. She did not get married to him, so she would be the second option; she only got married to him because he had the chance to be the chairman, and now he was openly saying he did not want to be one.
She curled her hand to her side and marched to his side of the bed. She pulled off the covers from his body and threw it, not caring where it dropped on the floor. Cael sat up quickly with a glare on his face. “What do you think you are doing?” he asked with a frown.
“And what do you think you are doing? Do I sound or look like a joke to you?”
“You only got married to me because you thought you had the chance of being the wife to the chairman,” he murmured, and she shrugged like it was no big deal.
“You make it sound like having ambition is a bad thing,” she said, putting her hands on her waist in frustration. Why was he so clueless? “Ophelia is with Cade for some reason.”
“The Frost family does not need the Vale family to feel rich, unlike you and your mother.”
“You have no reason to bring my mom into this,” she said angrily at him as she narrowed her eyes. “Who do you think you are? I married you to save your face, and yet…”
“You did not marry me to save my face but yours. I mean, your family desperately needed it,” he replied. He didn’t like the way he was talking to her, but this was the only way he knew to build a defence walk for himself.
“As if you did not need it, you think I did not know that you begged your mom to set you up with someone? Now that she has done it, you do not feel confident and want to step back without even trying.”
“I never wanted to become your chairman, but because my mom was so obsessed with it, I just had to play along, but I do not think I can do it anymore,” he explained.
“Do it anymore?” She scoffed at him. “This is not something you say you cannot do again; I only came in here because you had a chance and I would not sit on my hands and watch you just blow the opportunity.”
“Oh, please, like, there is anything you can do that would actually make a difference.” He scoffed back and stood up slowly. He went to where the blanket had landed and picked it up his back to her. He murmured silently, but just enough so he could hear her. “You know, I always thought we’d make a good pair, but you are not really a good partner for me, and since I have gotten into this marriage already, I have no choice but to remain in it,” he turned to her, and her face looked like all the blood in her body had rushed to her face; she was mad with anger.
“What is the difference? You thought we’d make a good pair, and now I am here, and you want to bail?” she asked. She was trying her best to calm down, but none of it was working out well for her. Her voice was cracked as if she could cry, but at the same time, it was too early for her to react that way.
“That was before I knew what you were after,” he said. Dropping the blanket to the bed, he walked back to the end and picked up his phone from the nightstand beside where he had been lying down. “It is so obvious you are not in this because you love me,” he added.
“Love? Who are the people like us that you have seen marry for love? If we fall in love on the way, then there are no issues, but we marry to make sure the wealth remains between us,” she explained as if she were talking to a toddler. She tried to close the gap between them, but he took a step back. She let out a breath, and her eyes widened.
“I thought I could cope, but I cannot,” he said and swallowed again. “You can have the bed; I cannot sleep like this,” he said before moving while trying his best to avoid her as he stormed out of the room.
“What do you think you are doing?!”
