“Alden!”
Sarah’s call from behind made Alden stop. A smile spread across her face as he turned. She jogged quickly to catch up with him.
“You didn’t answer my question earlier. Are we having dinner?” Sarah asked.
“Tonight? I can’t, Sarah.” Alden sighed.
Sarah was immediately disappointed. Earlier in the office, Alden had accepted her invitation to dinner. She hadn’t specified that it would be that night, but Alden usually didn’t refuse.
Now, suddenly, Alden was casually turning her down.
“Hannah’s not feeling well and I have to pick her up.”
Sarah was taken aback and swallowed her annoyance.
“What’s wrong with Hannah?” Sarah asked.
“I don’t know. But she’s been acting different lately.” Alden smiled. “I think she might be pregnant. But we haven’t confirmed it yet.”
“Pregnant?”
Sarah’s world seemed to collapse. This couldn’t be happening! She clenched her fists, but a smile still spread across her lips.
“Well, you should definitely confirm that. She might just be stressed, which could explain her strange behavior,” Sarah suggested.
“I’ll convince her to go to the hospital.”
“Yeah, let me know how it goes.”
Alden excused himself and hurried out of the office. Sarah stopped and waited until Alden was out of sight. She took a deep breath and then slowly walked back to her office.
Quickly, Sarah pulled her cell phone out of her blazer pocket and called Aspen.
“Where are you?” Sarah asked.
“At home,” Aspen replied coldly.
“We need to meet right away. Alden said Hannah might be pregnant!”
There was a gasp on the other end. “Really? Hannah?”
“It’s not confirmed. They haven’t seen a doctor yet.” Sarah exhaled, struggling to control her emotions. “Do you hear me? I’m waiting for you now!”
Aspen snapped back. “Can you lower your voice?”
“I’ll send the meeting place. Be there in 30 minutes.”
Sarah hung up and typed the address, then quickly grabbed her bag and stormed out of her office, almost slamming the door. People in the hallway stared at Sarah, surprised by her unusual behavior.
Sarah walked to the parking lot and got into her car. Without wasting any time, she drove to Texco. Something had taken hold of Sarah; she just had to see for herself.
“What a spoiled little brat. She’s probably pretending to keep Alden,” Sarah muttered. “Just wait. I’m taking Alden back because he’s mine.”
Sarah arrived at Texco and parked her car in front of the building. She waited and watched Alden’s car drive away. She became anxious because she could not clearly see Alden and Hannah in the car.
Sarah followed Alden’s car at a safe distance. Suddenly, her phone rang and she quickly reached into her bag to check the screen. It was Aspen.
“Hello?” Sarah answered.
“Where are you? I came as soon as I could, but you’re not here.”
“I’m following Alden and Hannah.”
“Why?” Aspen snapped, annoyed.
“I just…”
“Can you leave them alone for now? It’s better if we come up with a solid plan, or you’ll lose everything.”
Sarah didn’t want to miss the chance to follow Alden home. But what would she do after following them?
“Fine,” Sarah decided.
She ended the call and turned her car around to meet Aspen.
Sarah arrived at the cafe 20 minutes later. She parked in a hurry, got out of her car and rushed inside. Her face was pale and she was in a state of shock.
Aspen was already sitting at a table, enjoying a meal. Sarah raised an eyebrow, annoyed at Aspen’s nonchalant attitude. She sat across from Aspen.
“You’re paying for all this since I had to wait,” Aspen said.
“No problem.”
“Are you not going to order something? Before we talk?” Aspen asked. Sarah flinched slightly. “Do you think I can calmly eat like you right now? Where’s your mind?” Aspen sighed softly. If Sarah was this upset, there was no need to take it out on her.
“Why are you so tense?” Aspen looked at Sarah, confused.
“How can I be calm if Hannah is really pregnant? I can’t let her have a baby, Aspen.”
“But it’s not confirmed.”
“Then again, it could be true.”
Sarah sighed and poured herself a glass of water. Aspen began to think hard. If Hannah was really pregnant, her stepsister would inherit a lot from Alden.
Aspen couldn’t accept that Hannah had more wealth and was more loved by Alden. She couldn’t stand the thought of Hannah having a better destiny than she did.
“If Hannah is really pregnant, how can we make her miscarry?” Sarah muttered.
“What?”
“Well, I could make it look like an accident.”
Aspen was shocked. “No, we won’t do that. If it’s discovered, do you want to go to jail?”
Sarah groaned quietly. “I’m out of ideas.”
“Don’t give up yet.”
Hannah has to confirm if she’s pregnant. She will definitely go to the doctor.
“I’ll ask my mother to contact Hannah,” Aspen suggested.
“For what?”
“To find out when and where Hannah is going to see the doctor, of course.”
Sarah still didn’t understand Aspen’s plan.
“Look, once we have that information, we’ll follow Hannah to the hospital,” Aspen continued.
“And then what? Just confirm that she’s pregnant? Buy some abortion pills?”
Aspen scoffed. “There are no abortion pills. But we can do something else – make Hannah think she’s not pregnant.”
Sarah still didn’t follow Aspen’s plan. Make Hannah think she’s not pregnant? How?
“Aren’t you listening?” Sarah asked.
“We have to convince Alden that his wife can’t get pregnant. Then we find a way to get Hannah away from Alden as soon as possible.”
Sarah nodded. “But how do we make Hannah believe that she’s not pregnant?”
