VIKTOR
Three days later, I am seated at my desk, bored out of my mind as the soft glow of my office lamp casts shadows across the papers strewn in front of me.
The silence is thick, broken only by the faint ticking of the clock on the wall and I am completely lost in thought when a sharp knock breaks through the quiet.
“Enter,” I call out
Kael steps in, his eyes alert as he moves quickly to my desk.
“Alpha, you have a message from Calvin,”he says without preamble, holding out a small folded piece of paper.
I take it eagerly from him , turning the note over in my hands, the paper crinkling under my fingers. “What is it?” I ask, more to myself than to Kael. “Did he say?”
He shrugs. “Didn’t say much. Just that I should pass that to you at the earliest convenience.”
I unfold the note, my eyes scanning the short, scribbled message.
The message is simple and to the point.
Meet me at the old mill. Midnight. Come alone.
I sit back in my chair, my mind racing.
Could this be about the proposition? Is Calvin ready to talk? Or is this something else entirely? It could be a trap. Rowan’s gears about Calvin betraying me is very plausible
But still…
I saw his eyes that day
He saw reason in what I said.
The risk is real, but if there is a chance that Calvin is coming around, I have to take it.
“Where’s the meeting place?” Kael asks, watching me closely.
“How do you know there is a meeting?” I ask absent mindedly.
“A hunch. He seemed suspicious and on edge. So, where is it?”
“The old mill,” I reply as I get to my feet and grab my coat from the back of the chair.
Kael frowns.
“The old mill?” He asks. “The one at the border of town? That place is practically falling apart. If anyone wanted to make sure they weren’t found, that would be the perfect spot.”
It would also be the perfect place to bury a body without worrying but … nothing like that is going to happen.
I nod. “Exactly why Calvin chose it. Dominic wouldn’t think to look there.”
“I will get the car ready and-”
“No.”
“No?”
“You stay. I am going in alone.”
“But alpha -!”
“If I am not back by dawn, inform Rowan and the other alphas. And then come find me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The old mill sits on the outskirts of the territory, hidden by dense trees and the overgrown remnants of what was once a thriving building.
Now, the mill is little more than a husk, its wooden frame creaking and groaning under the weight of time.
It is far from prying eyes, secluded, and forgotten, a perfect meeting spot for those who want to avoid the scrutiny of prying eyes
As I make my way there, the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, and the sound of my footsteps crunching against the underbrush is the only noise that accompanies me. The moon hangs high, casting a pale light over the crumbling structure of the mill as I approach.
The door creaks as I push it open, stepping into the dimly lit interior. Dust hangs in the air, swirling in the shafts of moonlight that filter through the broken windows.
I scan the room, my senses heightened, alert for any movement.
And then I see him, Calvin, standing near the far wall, almost hidden, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable.
“You came,” he says.
“Of course, I did,” I say, my voice low as I step closer. “You called and I answered.”
“I didn’t think you would. Figured you will think it was a trap.”
“Is it a trap?”
“No.”
“Good. Now, what is this about?”
Calvin doesn’t move at first, just watches me with those sharp eyes of his. Finally, he speaks, his voice gruff. “We need to talk about your proposition.”
“Hmhm,” I say with a nod, waiting for him to continue.
I stop a few paces from Calvin, my eyes narrowing slightly as I study him.
He looks tense, on edge, the lines on his face deeper than I remember. Something in his stance tells me this is about more than just the proposition.
“What exactly do you want, Calvin?” I ask, my voice cutting through the silence of the mill.
Calvin glances away for a moment, his jaw tight. When he finally speaks, his tone is raw.
“The alpha- Dominic… he has… he has gone too far. More than I ever thought possible.”
I tilt my head slightly, waiting for him to explain. “How?”
He takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly. “He killed her. The Luna Mother.”
Right.
I already knew that… Thanks to Rowan.
His eyes flick to mine, searching for a reaction. “There was no remorse, no regret…. He didn’t even flinch when I showed him her head. And then he came to me that day, the same day I visited you, to go look for Louisa… as if nothing had happened. Like it was just another task on his list.”
“I am sorry for your loss,” I whisper, more to ground myself in the reality of it than anything else. I knew Dominic was on the edge, but this? This was a new level of madness. “And is he still acting like everything’s normal? Still obsessed with Rowan?”
Calvin nods grimly. “He’s too far gone. He is… he has gone rabid. Out of control, acting on impulse, with no remorse, no conscience. He is a danger to the entire pack.”
I take a step closer, my eyes locking onto his. “So, you’re ready to do something about it? Are you ready to help me?”
Calvin holds my gaze, his expression hardening with resolve. “I am. It is clear that Dominic can’t lead anymore. He is a threat to all of us. And if we don’t stop him now, he will destroy everything that has been built.”
I feel a small sense of satisfaction wash over me, but I keep my tone calm and controlled. “And how do you want to do this?”
He lets out a weary sigh.
“That one,” he says. “I haven’t figured it out yet.”
